why do wheel have spokes?

you all would have seen spokes in wheel can anyone tell me why these spokes are present?

Whilst I'm no engineer, I'm pretty sure that it's to stop the wheel collapsing under pressure. See what happens if you try to ride a bike with half the spokes shattered - it won't be pretty! It's either that, or purely an aesthetic function (which I doubt!).

but why then spokes only used something else could also have been used

its to reinforce the wheel's strength. they support it from bending/flexing too much. the crosswind thing does sound believable as well. plus a spoked wheel is much lighter than a solid wheel
