Medicine induced Dreams

I am patiently waiting another appointment with a neurosurgeon on the 30th of this month. It appears that I have another bulging disk in my back that is pressing against the nerves that go into my arms and legs, as well as one that goes into my head. It is causing problems, including numbness (Feeling like it's asleep from lack of circulation) and sharp pains. I am now walking like I'm 90, and today had to pull out the walker again. I am so miserable and praying that two people will cancel their appointments so mine will be moved up. In the meantime, the doctor has put me on some heavy duty pain meds. At first it was Toradol, but as the pain got worse, it was like swallowing M&M's. No relief at all. Then he put me on Darvocet. This is when the trouble started! I began to have strange dreams, even when I would lie down in the afternoon to take a short nap. The last night I took the Darvocet, I dreamed I was at a birthday party. Sounds normal right? The only bad thing about it was that the rest of the guests had all passed away. My dad, my little brother, My husband's grandmothers, two friends from high school. It seemed very real and left me shaking and totally freaked out. I couldn't get in touch with my doctor that day, so I called a friend of mine who is an orthopedic surgeon. He tells me that Darvocet can cause these dreams, and is one of the most prominant side effects! (It certainly isn't listed on the sheet from the pharmacy) So ow I'm taking 7.5 Hydrocodone. They at least help me sleep, though the back pain is so bad right now that nothing is completely taking it away. Have you ever had an adverse reaction to a medication?

You're on the same thing right now that I'm on. And I agree, it doesn't take all the pain away. Not by a long shot. I don't know if anything can take my back pain away. As for dreams, I'm not really sure if I noticed my dreams being more weird with this medicine, or any of the previous pain medications I've had in the past.

I cannot get in to see the neurosurgeon's until the 30th! The pain ~ frustration ~ depression cycle is unbelievable. I really took it out on Mike last night and then felt worse than ever. I have hurt 24/7 for the last 6 weeks, and nothing seems to make it better. The pain makes me frustrated, the frustration makes me depressed, and depression makes the pain worse! It's a vicious cycle that I can't seem to get out of! I could really use some prayer right now.

Oh my gracious. That is really scary. I guess you realize how many foods and medications that contains corn starch! I'd be in really big trouble if I was alleric to corn starch. I use it to cook with almost daily...To thicken my sauces and soups.

I have never taken Darvocet and I have never heard of it before. It is interesting how it affects your dreams. I used to take St John Wort and it had the similar side effects; very vivid and strange dreams. The medication I am on now does not cause anything like that. It is not so bad to dream vividly but we don’t want any nightmares! I hope these side affects dissipate for you so you can get a good night’s rest.

Unfortunately they haven't. When I quit taking them for a few days and tried something else, they got better. The problem with the lesser pain meds is that I woke up with the pain. So, I've resigned myself to dealing with the dreams, which are better than the pain!

My oldest daughter had her wisdom teeth pulled her senior year of high school. She had a reaction to the anesthesia that was really quite funny. Poor dear didn't know what planet she was on! All the way home from the surgery center, she sang. And I mean singing at the top of her lungs. Her mouth packed with gauze, and numb it was comical. Then there was the fact that it was April and she was singing Christmas carols.
