Do we really need a Guru to guide us in our spiritual Journey?

Surely we do need someone to guide when we have just started. But guide forever? I don't think so. As we don't need teachers throughout our lives, I am sure we don't need the Gurus throughout our spiritual journey. As we progress in our journey, we start understanding things in a unique perspective as in life and we don't need to get someone else's prespective. Each person's life is unique so is his spiritual journey. Did all the blessed people like Shabri, Kubja had Gurus. I guess not. They were blessed by the Lord because of their complete devotion and not because they were following some big shot Guru. Spirituality is about surrender, total surrender to Him. It hardly matters whether you have a Guru or not. I am personally experiencing the results of total surrender, and I want to share my thoughts with people in similar phase.

I think there is no need to be a guru, as a priestess of my religion, I used to teach novices a few years back, I was really stunned at how many people were looking for guidance but actually they weren't interested. I remember a few novices that 'worked', meaning I'd explain things, and they'd put them in practice,t hey were willing to learn, they were proactive and looking for answers...but I remember a lot of others that just sat and waited for me to feed them whatever info I'd want to give them. Those are the more at risk, I could really fee dthem everything and anything and they'd take it, they were the people who never asked a question, who never questioned something I taught. They were also the people that, when I encouraged them to practice some rituals or meditation, wouldn't do it, for 'lack of time' - yet they had time to sit and listen to me, or similar excuses. Of all my novices, I think, the ones that picked up teachings would have picked them up anyways, maybe I just made things esier. For those that didn't...no kind of guru would have done a thing for them as something essential in learning something, whatever it is, is initiative, being willing to do, to try...that comes from your inner person, I cannot teach you, no guru can teach you to want whatever you want...

Hi Paleorainy! I understand what you are talking about. But my point is here in my religion, the Guru is put in the same pedestal as Lord himself. I like everything they say, but when it comes about indispensability of a Guru, that is where I with my personal experience without a Guru, tends to differ with them. It is the Gurus who have made it so obvious about the indispensability of the Gurus that it sounds absolutely unreal and the argument put forward too doesn't seem good. Can't a student excel in whatever he is pursuing without the aid of Guru? I can't talk of others but my personal experience and my relationship with Him suggests, I can be way into this journey without a Guru. The importance of Guru as emphasized, by these present and Gurus of yore is overrated. Thanks Govind

now this is my kind of discussion from i have been on mylot a week now i answered some questions and asked two and it seems that most people are not in spiritual traning, and it seems that u r nice, now i am apart of the soul travel teachings, eckankar, our guide the living eckmaster also known as the mahanta,u do need a guru but not after u have advance on the highest path of the teachings, that u r apart of,the guru is the light giver and the guide into the deepest realms of the spiritual universes remember if u know that there is no time in those universes,u might wonder off too far too long if u study out of body movement, and find that when u return to your body awake in the hospital the nurses and doctor will be telling u that u were in acoma for years now,you stayed out of the body too long, and that is one main aspect why for us whom study soul travel have to travel with the guide whom nows the time for us to get back, the guru is very very important,up until u have advance fully on the spiritual journey where u can now travel alone, wheater in the physical or spiritual realm, may the blessings be

If you mean a teacher, yes. Everybody needs somebody to lead them to their spiritual journey.

I believe that human beings need a spiritual guidance in their life. We all have human weakness to commit mistakes. Religion helps us to live a good life. I love to go to church on Sundays and listen to the speech given by the priest. It is good to listen to nice speeches once in a while to keep our life going in a good way. Praying and singing along with the crowd on Sundays gives me a lot of energy, confidence, and relaxation.
