hi,friends!several weeks ago i met an American who came to Beijing Language University to learn Chinese on subway .And we became friends by chance. He is smart and humorous,so i like him very much. And i often come to see him.Today i came to see him again,he said we could hang out for dinner or watch a movie or do something else. What bothers me is that there are so many cultural differences between Chinese and American. For example, the Chinese like to pay for friends if they go out for dinner together, but the American like to go Dutch. If we go out ,how should i do? In addition, the Chinese are undemonstrative and they wont say 'i like you' until they unburden themselves to the lover. But he always say 'i like you' to me.Does he mean something special?

I can give you an American perspective on guys. If he is in China studing abroad do expect him to have a whole lot of money. If you go out to dinner and he offers to pay, thank him for his hospitality and accept. He may be slightly offended if you offer to pay for his meal as it is a pride issue for younger males to have a female pay for thier meals here. As far as him saying he likes you, you may want to watch out for that. American terms for like or love are very culturally different than yours. The statement I like you could mean that he likes to be in your presences as a friend only. You certainly should not take this to mean that he is looking for you to be a life partner for him. You should give him a chance to see what if anything could develop. You never know where love could be lurking.

Only you who can tell if that "I love you" is true and something especial. I know what you mean mcongy, some people are easy to say that 3 words... sometimes it is just as normal as saying hi to a friend... But you can diffrentiate that. You know him more... I hope you certainly know the real him now...
