Why do so many people love to generalize?

Hi people. I have noticed for some time now that quite a lot of people, even those on myLot, love to generalize especially about those who are not from their own ethnic, religious or racial background. While we are often uncomfortable with what we don't understand, it cannot be acceptable that this fear or dislike manifests itself in hatred or hateful spiteful comments about a group as a whole. While it is ok to be critical, and voice your disapproval, you should never go beyond the boundaries of decency, even if others do. Do you agree with this sentiment? Or do you have a different opinion?

Generalisation is not about hatred! Its because our minds tend to groups things in stuff in order to make it easier for us to understand. So, generalising is easier!

Well, such a generalisation is a humourous one! Once I met a drunk Irish guy at a party, and he wanted to go out with me, and I was so drunk myself, I had forgotten his name, so when he left, I said: "Byeee Patrick!". There are humourous generalisations and serious ones. :) I wouldn't get offended for most generalisations. :)

So, what you think is funny may not be for those you laugh at. Irish people in general are not drunks. This kind of stereotyping and generalization very often carries beyond the laugh and joke, and can manifest itself in discrimination based on those generalizations.

You need not worry. :) People who have a high self esteem will not take those jokes personally. :).

No. I do not agree with the generalizations. Everyone has character. Character is unique.

Hi - I agree with you. Generalization is very much a wrong attitude and approach to dealing with people. Thanks for the comment
