Are Tattoos and Piercings Still Hot?

United States

I got pierced back in 1996, I think it was. It was very counterculture then. Then, over the next few years, piercings and tattoos became THE in thing to do. I got a tattoo in 2002. They were already pretty big at the time. Then it seemed both tattoos and piercings became pretty mainstream, certainly not for older generations, but yes, for younger ones. If the cycle goes as cycles usually do, these things will be "out" soon or already are. I am just wondering if they are. I figure with tattoo shows popular on cable and such, they are probably still a big draw. Not sure about piercings. Still kinda mainstream for the young. Are you young? What do you think? Are you not-as-young? What do you think? I had to take out my belly ring when I was pregnant and I don't see myself putting it back in. I doubt I'll get anymore tattoos. Mine is mostly hidden and has special meaning. My husband wants more tattoos. I was just wondering about these practices in general. I think they will be passee soon if they aren't already. But maybe not. What's your opinion?

Oh.....i think, tattoos are in down trend already....but piercing is still hot i the younger generation and itwill remain hot some more years..especialy in a country like india, where it has just started going up....so, many more years in india is sure. So, you also like to all these kinds....piercing, tattoos....good and also sad that you are not going to do it anymore.....whatever hhas gone up has to come down.so, in coming day's these alsocome down and some new things might start up again....life moves on.....hope we remain young for another 50years or so to see all these new trends .......lolz

Well, so far you are definitely winning the race for "best response". Hmmm...that's interesting in India that tattoos are out and piercings in. I think it might be the other way around here, but I am an old recluse, so I need the young folk to help me out here. Heh heh. I will get young again. These people who say kids keep you young are ridiculous. They age you, imho!

well, I am older, and I hope that it is going out of style. I have three kids, age 7, 9 and 11 and I hope it is totally out of style by the time they are teenagers. With my luck it will be out of style and something even worse will be happening! LOL

My boys - My kids, in August of 2006. Caspian and Zane. 8 y/o and 18 mos.
Hey Pookie! LOL--anyone here seen Rent? Oh, that's a good question in and of itself. I watched it once and my toddler became obsessed. We watched it nonstop for about 2 months this summer. But on to the subject at hand...spoken like a true parent. I find myself feeling more and more that way, too. I think my boys are so naturally beautiful that even though I was into the goth thing and hippie dudes, I just like the way they look kinda clean cut. They are only 8 and 20 months, so I still exert control. We shall see what happens.

Tattooing is one of the new lifestyles people are coming to these days. I have a tattoo, yes one only, but not the last one. I am going to start a tattooing course, I am the apprentice, yes. Excited and can't wait. What about you?

I'm 19, so I guess I'm still pretty young. I like tattoo's and piercing. I can't speak for everybody, but I don't have any, but girls with tatoos and piercings in the right place are still hot to me.

Hey, that's cool. You are speaking for yourself and that's what I wanted to hear. Who thinks it's hot, and who not! Thanks for your comment.

Heh heh. I think that is part of the charm. It's a sort of club. I am tough enough to withstand this. My belly piercing was not so bad in the initial piercing (I am pretty good with pain), but it took FOREVER to heal. Hey, come to think of it, childbirth was the same way!!! I made it through over 30 hours of labor to end up with a cesearean birth and then got an infection that was much worse than any of it. Oh well! It is all experience. Thanks for your comment. (Glad this thread is picking up a little--I was wondering why no one had any opinions on this!) :)

Tattoos and piercings were huge a couple of years back. Everyone had one on their lower back that showed over thier hipsters. Interesting look but hey, whatever strikes your fancy. Personally I would love a small hidden tattoo of something that is meaningful to me but I still haven't got around to it yet, doubt I ever will. Piercings however, have always been in the mainstream and I think will always continue to be. I think the hype over tongue rings are over, I dont see as many people with them as I used to, people are also reaslising unless you have the stomach for them, belly piercings are pretty gross. Though I think ear piercings are still going strong.

This is interesting to me! I would not have thought of piercings as always in the mainstream. Ears, sure, but not others. Aha! You are 22--You probably don't remember before they were mainstream. :) Should I share my tattoo? I don't know. It is meaningful to me. (I won't show it, but talk about it, perhaps.)

to much - tats
I am one that is not so young and am thinking about another tattoo probably on my right shoulder I currently have one on my ankle of cherries. I don't think they will ever go out. I think people get them as special meanings mostly now days. Then there are the bikers and then the military peeps...thinks tats will be around awhile

I think body modification in general is a trend that will keep growing and growing. New body modification trends will come along with surgery advancing. Years ago you saw piercings mostly in the alternative fashion scene but has become more excepted by society with in the past few years. Now with laser tattoo removal i think the concern about a tattoo being permament isn't such a big concern anymore. I am very active in the metal scene and tattoos/piercings are extremely popular at the moment.

I guess tattoos and piercings are still pretty popular here in Holland, but I don't think you should get one just because it's hot or a trend. You will be very sorry when you have a tattoo and it's goes out of fashion; it can be removed but your skin will never look as good again. Don't get me wrong, I think tattoos and piercings are very beautiful, but there are too many people that don't oversee the long run and will be sorry. I have my belly button (19) pierced and my eyebrow (18, but it grew out). I'm 20 at the time being. To get your eyebrow pierced as a girl was a counterculture back then, but now it's absolutely normal and a lot of girls have it. 2 years ago everyone would call you a lesbian.... fashion, go figure! And last but not least, I do think there will become a time they get passee, but on the other hand; fashion from the 60's and 70's also pop up every now and then. History repeats itsself, also in fashion and trends. I'm pretty sure we haven't seen the last of it.

You make some very good points. I agree with you. Especially on the counterculture-lesbian-popular-passee-and then back again some day. Thanks for the comment!

I have 12 tattoos-- and right now they are really popular as far as I am concerned. But I really don't care if they become passe or not, as I just happen to be an avid tattoo collector. I'll be getting more tattoos and if people don't like it in 20 years, that is their problem-- I still will!

Good for you! I would imagine with your username, you should have a few tattoos. I think there will always be people who do it just because they love it and people who will jump on the bandwagon. The most important is to be happy with yourself and you sound as though you are. Kudos!

I'm not a particular fan of tatoos, and I haven't seen that many around lately. But I think piercings, especially ears, will always be in fashion. I don't have anything pierced myself, but that's only because I'm too afraid :P

i think that tattoos and piercings are hot when your are at your teen age life, upto late 30s, but once you enter professionality level and maturity, i think for some like me, it fades out and we need to move on, i had my tongue pierced once but then after becoming an engr, a have to take it off because of the dress decorum at the office. at first i was missing it, then as i grew, i learned that it was not appropriate with the job that i have. so in my opinion, it's up to the environment that you are surrounded with on whether tattoos and piercings will still be hot. a case to case basis as i can say.

I don't know if they are hot or cool. I do know that I enjoy getting piercings and tattoos. I have four piercings and one tattoo. I am 27 years old. I do wonder sometimes what people think about my piercings (can't see the tat), but I really don't care, I am just curious. I don't think that permanently changing your body should ever be done as a fad or because it is THE thing to do. It is something you have to live with the rest of your life, as piercing can causes scars, and tattoos even if removed still leave a mark.

Besides ear peircings and minor tatoos I do not find them very appealing.
