To Tip or Not to Tip?

Sadly enough, I had one of those nights that make me just wonder about people. I am a professional waitress and bartender (my Father is turning in his grave, by the way!), and I had such an awful night last night that I just had to put this out there for any MyLotters who care to answer. If you go out to a retaurant and recieve a full-service meal, how do you tip? I can understand if service is a question leaving a sub-standard tip, but if everything goes as planned and your food was good and your server was attentive and polite, would you leave a poor tip anyway? If so, WHY?? Servers work hard for a living and yes, I know that it is a choice to work in an industry where you survive on the graces of others, but if you have any questions about tipping, I would ask that you read the following article and let me know what you think. http://www.infobarrel.com/Tipping_Suggestions_for_the_Novice Have a great day and thank you for your response!

1st my praise to Saint Steven of service workers diatribes...HAIL! then I want to commiserate with you Ljb.... to often folks go out that can barely afford the entree, never mind the tip. Plain and simple DON'T GO if you can't afford the whole price, TIP included. And whats with tipping on the amount AFTER A COUPON deduction? WTF? Don't they know they should tip on the total before taxes and deductions? they all need to read Steve's book, Waiter rant get it soon.

Girl you speak the truth! I was just reading bits of it today thanks to you. He is my inspiration for writing, too. I love that book! It is SOOO sad that it even need to be said that a person should not go to a tipping establishment if they don't want to tip. What a sh*tty thing to do to a person trying to make a living! Have a great day!

I worked as a waitress too.Hey,I know how it is.Thankfully,my daughter learned by watching me.She leaves gracious tips now for her waiters and waitresses and leaves a note alone with it now. Not just the money.Of course, some servers really just need the money, but she leaves them the note to let them know they did a great job at their service.Still, if someone is rude,I don't think that I can tip well.Even when I worked as a waitress, there were other girls and guys around me, that I thought, no wonder you're not getting any tips and even when I go out to eat now. However, there are also some times when I can't afford to tip or my daughter can't afford to tip.So, I would hope that some waiters and waitresses know(as I did then) that not all people are just trying to rip you off. Some of us simply can't afford it or don't have that much.We may have spent our last money on the meal, itself. So, why go in and eat if we know we can't tip, right?Because there are times when the closest place is one where there are waitresses and waiters...and we're starving. But, all in all, yes I do tip when I can.

Hi ljbinkop. The link you have posted is very informative. For me, great restaurant service really deserves a generous tip. The amount of the tip to be given, however, depends on the country practice. Here in the Philippines, a tip of 10% or more is already a generous amount. I understand that in Western countries like yours, a bigger tip % is expected.

Thank you for your comment, and I appreciate you reading the article. Of course, I am just referring to common tipping practices in America with that article. In many countries, people in the service industry get a regular wage, and do not expect to be tipped at all. Tipping is pretty much a Western cultural thing, I think!
