Children not being taught in School

My son has some learning disabilities and slower than others. I have talked and talked with the school to get my son tested, they said ok, it has been over a month now and have not heard a word. Now, I am sure we were popular and had money they would do whatever they could with my child and help prepare him for his studies and check what he needs or has. I am getting really fed up with this school system, and not liking how they treat my son. I am sure my child isn't the only one being treated this way and I also know, this is typical in many states, counties, countries. I know if you have the name, you get what you want. You don't have the name or money, you don't get anywhere. Why should it dwindle down to the kids, they are our future, they didn't do anything wrong, they need to learn and go on to college. I don't want my son to be so far behind in his studies that they just "pass" him so they don't have to deal with his issues and then have him quit when he is in high school! does anyone else have this issue with their child (ren) in school?

Hi, charblaize! Yes, i did have this very problem with the public schools in my area. I finally got tired of them not wanting to teach my son, that i pulled all of my children out of the public school system and started homeschooling them. I would have preferred to send them to a private school but they are much to expensive. I had several problems with the public school system and it all boiled down to who had the name or money. It is a shame that the students who are slower than others get mistreated, and cannot get the same education that our tax dollars go to provide.

I'm sorry for your experience, yes all children should get the same education we all pay the tax dollars for it!! I thought of home-schooling but my son is better at listening to someone else besides me and then I get frustrated with him not listening to me or concentrating on what he should. I have seen there is a private school in an surrounding county but too afraid to see how much it costs, then in another county I have seen how the children turn out from that private school and want to run away from it quick. There is another smaller school where we live that I may change to if it comes to it and they are more for the special needs and really work well with them.

Being an undergraduate teacher here in Australia, I have noticed that this does happen on occasions or the teachers are too lazy or just don't notice childrens disabilities..to me, I don't think it should matter what background the child has as they all deserve to get the required help. money isn't everything & if they realised that then they would be more inclined to help...they don't even know that they could actually be helping the next Bill Gates??

This is so true...I went to private schools from 3rd grade to 12th grade so I don't remember my public schooling but I can tell you that I did have a lazy 5th grade teacher, he was that bad that my 6th grade teacher had to work twice as hard to get my whole class up to speed - now that's what I call dedication. I just don't see why anyone's background should come into it because look at some of the successful people these days...there are alot who have come from very poor backgrounds - like Oprah for example.

You need to tell them that you'll be contacting the board of education if they don't get something done. Before you go to the board, have a name ready of an influential organization representing learning disabilities that the board is scared of. Also have the name of your congressman ready so you can throw that at them, too. Believe me, as a mom who has had disputes with my sons' schools, this strategy works. If they won't do what's right for your son and what he is entitled to, be prepared to be a bully! This is your son, you need to take off the kid gloves and deliver a few body blows to those jerks. The squeaky wheel gets the grease so be VERY noisy!

I don't know of any organizations, but I did talk to an old friend of mine and she told me about where she sent her daughter and they have done wonders for her. She used to go to this school also, so she told me of a few things. Our congressman, i don't think he really cares, they are cutting alot of educational things to "save" money. This state is ridiculous about things. Yes, I would like him to finish school and enjoy going. Its pretty bad when this is what they are here to do and don't even want to do their job. The teacher who lives next door to us is awesome and we need more like him, to bad he teaches a higher grade.

my stepdad tells me to send to another local nearby school. My husbands family thinks its just because of who we are and don't give any advice.

If you have insurance, you can have your child evaluated and tested by an outside Child psychologists...Sometimes they are better than the schools psychologists. My son has ADD and a learning dissability...the school doctors diagnosed him wrong and only when he was in 7th grade did we realize that he had a Learning Dissability. Needless to say, the school failed my child. After that I had him tested by an outside doctor, and found out what my son's issues were. I believed him more than the shool's results. There are some good schools out there, but there is also some very bad ones, and unfortunately our children are the ones that get the brunt of it.

Yes, I have seen then pass kids just because they were a pain and didn't want to deal with them. I have a nephew who they don't do what they should with him, neither does his parents, but you would think after so many issues and trouble they would send this child to juvy and he is in 4th grade! I have had our family doctor see my son many times with his issues, he has a behavioral therapist that goes to the school twice a week for a half hour, he see's a therapist once a week, and I have just taken him to a psychologist. Because my son is in the school system, they think it is the school's responsibility to get him tested. So needless to say, they are running me in circles.
