What do you think of bookcrossing.com or others similar?

Book crossing is a site that allows you to "register" a book then set it free in the "wild". The hope is that someone will come across it, perhaps read it and then go to the website and let everyone know that it was "found". Then they would release it as well. What do you think of this idea? I love it, except for the fact that I am certain that most of the books are kidnapped and never again released for others to find. I am signing up anyway, with the hopes that one day I will see a book I have released thousands of miles away!

I love the concept in theory. I just don't think I could release any of my books.

I get a lot of free books that I am just not interested in reading. Those are going first. I am going to upgrade to mostly hardcover books in the future and when I do, the paperbacks that I cannot sell will be released. That way I am not sad to see anything go.

It is a problem, but wouldn't you want others to enjoy the books as much as you did ?

I have been a bookcrossing member for some time now. I have had great success with releasing and catching books. I am also on a lot of book rings. I think it's great and you shouldn't worry too much. Sometimes books get lost but it's very rare.

If you sign up, please use my name as referrer: "guysoffer" If you have any science fiction/fantasy books, I'll also be glad to request something straight away to get you started :)
