childhood lessons

My 10 year old son was brought home by a police officer the other day. My initial instinct was to take him to his room and whoop the butt off his back but he was so shaken and upset I decided to listen to him. Yes parents should do that. He told me what happened and we will go to court and he will learn that what I say isn't just to say it is because I have been there before. The lesson is "being at the wrong place at the wrong time" and "guilt by association". I feel for him as he has never been in any real trouble, any more than a 10 year old boy. I can only hope that he does learn from this. Now my question to my fellow my-lotters is, should I let him leave the house again. Not literally, but you know what I mean. I have already called the parents of all involved and told them if they see my child around their house I want them to call me asap. I know these kids and since the incident have been told by the police officer that 3 of these boys were what he likes to call "job security". So yes I have forbade my son to be around these kids. So what now.
