How to generate google page rank?

Hi i am a newbie in SEO marketing.I Currently my website google page rank is 0.To generate google page rank.I am submitted my site to most of the search engine directory and i my website gets daily at least 20 direct visitors and 200 unique visitors from traffic exchange sites. Can anyone tell me how to increase my google page rank?

I am also trying to learn SEO and found several tips from other bloggers. A friend of mine who has been working as SEO told me that it takes at least a month to increase page rank. And backlinking is really helpful as long as you choose the sites to put your link to. You have to make sure that the site has high PR (5 and up) and that they enabled 'dofollow'. most of the things I put there are from my online friends too who are also trying to learn SEO. Its good to join forums wherein members has the same goal. I learned a lot from them.
