I use avast, but the free version. It is good for me, before I have used:
McAfee - good but it takes forever to update
Norton -

I had 43 viruses on my laptop thanks to norton
AVG - good and free but many times it'd fail to update
and lately Avast, with which I'm really well. If it keep working I'm not going to change that again.

AVG is also good but has recently been getting slightly lower ratings than Avast. I agree about the updates! Very often it gives an error on the automatic updates but when you then go to update manually, there are no problems.
Norton is quite reliable but a memory and resource hog. I'd be interested to know what the 'viruses' were that you claim Norton was unable to detect. Many AV products are over enthusiastic and report 'false positives' - that is, they report code that they can't understand as a 'virus'. Usually the name they give contains the word 'Generic'. If you had errors from another AV product that reported a 'Generic Trojan', it's unlikely that it was a real threat.

I used to use the free version of AVG for many years but recently I read a review that gave Avast slightly better ratings so I changed to the free version of that. I have been very pleased with it so far. It updates almost daily and doesn't keep telling me that I ought to buy the paid version.
It has given me a couple or warnings recently about unsafe websites and has prevented me from downloading what it said were trojans. I rarely visit 'dangerous' sites but I was glad of the warnings. On the whole I'm very happy with it.
You should NOT have put your key in the discussion, by the way. It's unlikely that it will work for anyone else (since it is usually made for a particular username and/or computer ID) but it is actually a breach of their Terms to share it.
