We had two dogs for years, a mini fox terrier and a dalmation cross. Now my ex husband has taken his dalmation with him. The mini fox terrier is pining. I really think she needs company of another dog. My daughter and I have been discussion breeds. I favour a maltese/shitzu cross, a very popular lap dog in Australia. They do take some care with hair grooming. My daughter favours a Chinese Crested Dog. These are odd looking dogs with little or no hair. The variation she wants has a little hair on it's tail, head anmd a line down it's back. Apparently they have great, friendly personalities. They need sunscreen on their bodies all the time if going outside. They also tend to get excema and require moisturising cream. I cant make up my mind? Im wondering if My Lotters have experience with these dog brreds, particularly the Chinese Crested? Or maybe you have another opinion entirely? We do have two cats as well.

A friend of mine has a Crested named Presley. She names him after Elvis because of the way his hair flips on the top of his head. He is the funniest little nekkid dog I have ever seen, and he is great. He sleeps under the covers on her bed down either at her feet or behind her knees, because he gets cold at night. He wears clothes when she takes him out so that he won't get cold in the winter, and won't get burned in the summer. But his personality is great. You should see him. He is in love with her Great Dane named Delilah. They make a really cute couple. LOL.

I like the idea of it wearing clothes. Never thought of that. Good way to protect him from the sun. Our sun is very strong. Your description of your friends crested sounds very positive.

I know nothing about dogs. My brother had some hunting dogs or mixed breeds. I always favored cats. The Chinese Crested sounds like a lot of work between the sunscreen and the cream. They might make up for it with their personality, and they wouldn't shed.

I always favoured cats too. But after having two husbands with dogs, and now my daughter, I grew to like them a lot. I worry about the work with the sunscrean and cream too.

i'm partial to afghan hounds. they're high maintenance as far as coat goes, but they're family protective dogs and mine lived with two cats at the time. my dog in particular was a big fluffy doofus, but he was a lovable big fluffy doofus.

Sounds like u already made your mind up for size and kind. The only thing left is what dog u want to spend time with.. Your daughter like most want a certain dog, however , how much time will she spend with it... When u buy a dog young enough it will adjust to cats or the cats will make it adjust,, REMEMBER AWLAYS LUV/ CARE FOR YOUR DOG/ PET, THEY WILL ALWAYS LUV U...

I personally favor the maltese. I have three of them. They are the absolute sweetest dogs. They do require a lot of care, though, as their hair grows fast! It is a lot of work to keep them groomed. But the work is worth it because they have the most precious personalities. Another great option is a Yorkie. They are also very small, like the maltese. They are so cute and have wonderful personalities.

I love the Maltese as weell. What is popular here are the maltese/shitzu cross. Very friendly, lap dogs, but yes, the grooming is some work. Your three must be great friends.

pets are always bad for child health. if you can keep them away from the reach of the childs' living place, you can keep a dog at your home. but try to buy such pet with not too much long and hairy type.

I dont think I agree that pets are bad for child health. Quite the opposite. Of course, owners need to keep their pets clean and disease free.

Pets are not bad for childrens health - in fact studies are proving that children exposed to pets from a young age are less likely to develop allergies. (making them healthier!) They are also great for a childs mental development and overall teaches them to be kind and responsibility. Having an animal and forcing it to live outside ostracized from the family does not do that. And the length of the hair is not what causes allergies -the dander of the skin does- so it really doesn't matter whether an animal is long or short haired. If you already have allergies to dogs- then there are a few breeds that are hypo-allergenic, like poodles for instance, and of course the above mentioned Chinese crested.. Sorry Rika, do not mean to sound so harsh.. but your facts are wrong.

Hi Jenny! It does look like your one dog needs a companion because it's missing it's friend. Poor thing doesn't understand where the other went. I found a questionnaire that you can fill out and at the end you'll get your results of which breed would be best for you. It's a really neat and thorough questionnaire and it helps to find that right dog for you and your daughter. I wish you two the best of luck! NOT a referral link but a link to help her find a dog! http://selectsmart.com/DOG/

hi jenny If it were me I would get a small dog like your maltese dog or the mix you suggest , I saw a sweet dog here at Gold crest its a miniature dog with really curly hair but not a poodle. its so sweet good natured, wish I knew what the breed was. I would love one myself if I could afford the extra money in my rent.

I love the Maltese dogs but my daughter always wants to be different. They can be very expensive to buy, so my daughter has to pay half.

I would eventually love to have a dog of my own and I'm thinking a pet labrador would be very nice. It's sounds like you have quite a bit of experience when it comes to dogs whereas I have very little in the way of experience. I think that you should just follow your heart and listen to what your inner voice tells you. Good luck. Andrew

Labradors are such friendly dogs, but very naughty too. They are very popular here as guide dogs.

I would agree that behaviour of a dog is very important.
