Why Thanksgiving day is declared as public holiday?

Why in US Thanksgiving day is declared as public holiday ? Why do they give much importance to that day ? what for that special day?

Hi! It is supposed to represent when the colonists that came from England and the Indians were able to work together to get through a very harsh winter and share the bounties from the land. It is a day to give Thanks for the things we have and to be able to spend time with our families.
