A 2 year old Jacksonville Florida Basset Hound named Roxy ate atleast 130 nails to punish her Mom for going away for a weekend. Yes, the owner left the dog with a friend so she'd be well taken care of while gone. She even warned the friend to lock Roxy up when leaving the house because she didn't like being left alone. The friend just needed to run down to the local convenience store to pick up a couple of things & thought Roxy wouldn't notice...WRONG!!! Roxy managed to find the nails & apparently liked the taste. The vet had to put Roxy to sleep & remove the nails a few at a time by pulling them back up through her mouth. It took over an hour to remove all those nails. The worst I ever had a pet do was a cat that ate a portion of a spool of thread. He started chocking & I could see the red thread handing from the side of his mouth. Fortunately, the part left was long enough for me to get ahold of it & I slowly pulled it back out...praying that I wouldn't do any permanent damage. When that last section came out, he jumped up & gave me a kiss...running off into my bedroom. After that, I made sure ALL spools of thread were put in a safe place. Well, this guy was crafty & I had to childproof my cabinets & drawers because he'd find a way to get into them!!! Have you ever had a pet that ate something dangerous & how did you deal with it???

Our daughter has a basset and they are curious and nosey. She will tear up pampers if my daughter leaves her alone for long periods of time. She ate a rubber ball, one of those small ones, and had to be taken to the vet to see where it was in her system. The vet couldn't find it so guess she got rid of it one way or the other. She gets into all kinds of things and will tear up plastic bags if she sees them laying around. I can tell you she's the friendliest dog and is so sweet.
All the years we have had dogs, I can't recall them eating anything other than their food and once in awhile table food. And our cat never did chew up things either so we have been fortunate.

Yes, you have been VERY fortunate!!! My dog ate the bumper sticker off my van. I had tried to remove it & couldn't get it off. I don't know how long it took him, but I went into the garage one day & on coming out I see maybe 2 tiny strips of the paper left. I moved the van out onto the street in front of my house for fear he'd eat the tires next!!! This same dog pulled up 20 feet of cable & chewed it in two. I didn't have my internet nor my TV for a week!!!

hi ladymarissa oh yes we had a cat that got the long fringe on a stuffed monkey toy of my son's caught in her teeth and it took two of us to get the yarn out from between her teeth. my husband held her while I slowly pulled out the yarn while the usually docile grey cat was snapping and hissing but once we got her untangled she was a happy camper and curled up in my lap. I took my scissors and cut all those loops off that monkey as I had visions of our baby son getting one of them around his little neck and choking. people do not think when they make homemade stuffed toys of dangers like that only parents will think of those hazards. lol .

It's hard to think like a child or one of our fur babies!!! Things we take for granted, they see as enticing!!! You're correct about what we non-parents see as opposed to parents. I learn that the hard way every so often with one of my discussions.
I have blinds on my windows. I've heard often enough that the cord should be tied up high so children & pets can't get to them & hang themselves. My neighbor brings her overactive toddler over every so often & I have 2 very active tomcats, so I've tied my cords withing 6 inches from the top so I can still open the blinds & so my young visitor nor my cats can reach it. Or so I thought. My neighbor's child has never tried to reach the shortened cord. However, I came in the other night to find one of my cats hanging from the cord by one foot fighting like crazy. I helped him down & sent him off to safer ground. I shortened the cord even more to discourage his curiosity. About a half hour later, I'm in the kitchen cooking when I hear a strange noise. I come out to find that dayum cat hanging from the cord again. I rescued him once again. After that I kept my eye on him. The brat was jumping up on an end table, then over to a chair near the window, then up on the back of the chair, then he'd jump up grabbing for the cord. Of course, once his claw grabbed the cord, it was hooked in it with the cat hanging in the breeze with NO way to free himself. Now I'm looking for a way to fix this hazard. He's obviously got the cord on his mind & he hasn't figured out yet that he's in danger if I'm not home to save his stupid butt!!! I just wonder what the excitement is in his mind that causes him to keep coming back for more??? I will keep working on the problem & watching him closely until I can save him from himself!!!

Yes I have and guess who .....................yep Gissi
When I first got him I also still had 4 Cats then, all as cheeky as the other, well Scruffy, who was the very first used to be able to open the Fridge
This night she had opened the Fridge and thrown Gissi a Chicken Bone, oh yes she used to share with others what was in the Fridge, Gissi come through choking like mad at first we did not know what was wrong, till my Son went in the Kitchen and saw Scruffy empty the fridge out
Gissi had not been with us very long and was still very scared, he bit me twice as I tried to get the bone out
Eventually and to this Day I do not know how the Bone came out I was so grateful as it was so scary and I thought we would loose him
Well by the Time I got in the Kitchen 4 Cats had a Feast and the Fridge was empty, I got a Child lock for the Fridge which made Scruffy angry but well never mind
I am so glad though that the Dog is ok, but really surprised that she ate them nails and not hurt herself when swallowing them

Ms Gabby...
You know Gissi would NOT let a cat play him like that!!!
You MUST have him confused with another dog!!!!
I thought my cat was bad when stealing from my cabinets & drawers; but, had he gotten into my fridge, I would have tied his feet together. I did have one cat that would jump in my fridge when I opened the door. I was sitting watching TV one evening when it dawned on me that I hadn't seen her for a while. I looked everywhere she usually hid...NOTHING. Then the light bulb came on & I went to the kitchen & opened the door to the fridge & out she flew. Her assss was COLD!!! So, I wrapped her up in a good thick blanket & held her close to me for an hour or so. That was the LAST time she ever jumped into the fridge. I guess she found it to NOT be much fun!!!

My pets have never done that. My grandpa taught us that animals are much like children and they have the same curiosity, we are responsible for their safety. I have always child-proofed anywhere I lived with a pet. People don't understand how an animal thinks so they over estimate their capacity for judgment!

I know I can't think like my little fur babies!!! When my 2 Labs get into something & I try & fix it so they can't do it anymore, I have to take them to the other side of the house & chain them up so they can't see how I'm fixing the problem. Or else, they will know how to get into it. The male dug up my cable wire & chewed it in two...NO computer & NO TV for a week. It ran under ground for over 100 feet & then ran up the side of a brick wall. What made him look at it & figure out where to dig just so he could chew is beyond my thinking. So I chained him up on the other side of the house while the repairman fixed it. I had him place several cinder blocks in front of the connector so the dog couldn't see it. Don't you know he pulled the cinder block over & pulled the wire out from under the house. And people say they can't think & don't remember...JUST NOT SO!!!

that is pretty shocking to hearand i tough that you were referig to finger nail but actual nails that is very hard to imagine for an animal to do and to also like the taste

I find it strange & am only assuming that Roxy liked the taste as she ate 130 of those nails. That's surely a destructive way to get back at Mom!!!
