I love mustard greens. I cooked some from the can on Thanksgiving Day. They were so delicious! I also love turnip greens too. It has 90% of Vitamin A in mustard greens. Which is very healthy for me. I love dark leafy green vegetables. I love to eat these with baked chicken. It goes so well with this type of meal. When I first heard of mustard greens, I thought that it tasted like mustard. But, I found out that it taste like collard greens and spinach. How do you like to cook your mustard greens? What kind of condiments do you like to add to it? I like adding pure ground black pepper and butter.

I have learned to eat a lot of new things after moving to the South and I have learned to like most of them but mustard greens I have not come to like or can even tolerate to eat. I have learned to like black eyed peas, collard greens and kale coming from the western part of the country I had not even heard of. It is the texture that I can't abide.

I guess most southerners have grown up with blackeyed peas. I didn't like them at first because to me they tasted like burnt beans. I guess it's the way they are fixed. I haven't tried cooking them from dry beans just had the canned ones so not sure how to fix them.

I don't care for the dark leafy vegetables. I haven't tried mustard greens in a while, but spinach, collard greens, mustard greens and even brussel sprouts are things that I do not enjoy. My mom absolutely loves this stuff. I'm not sure if she puts pepper on hers, but I know she likes the butter on it like you do. When she fixes brussel sprouts, it smells up the whole house. When she would fix them when I was a kid, I would just get up and go outside and play for the rest of the day. I guess it was a good way to get me out of the house if I was getting on her nerves. LOL

Hi, kykidd! I love brussel sprouts! I love to add butter and pepper to mines. Mrs. Dash's seasoning would work perfectly too! You just don't know what you are missing when you are not eating these type of vegetables!

My first expericance with mustard greens was mildly traumatic, although now I think it's kind of funny which is why I"m sharing it here. I was living with a bunch of other girls in a house. Apparently they ate raw mustard greens as a salad and had experienced unexpected after effects. They offered me some salad and I ate it happily. They were delicous raw, crisp, dark greens with a mild bitterness and pepperiness that played well with raspberry vinnegrette and shredded asiago cheese. However, in about the same amount of time that it took me to devour my large pile of greens I was forced into the restroom by the uncontrolable urge to do the twosies. It was an urgent urgency that compelled me to look, which is something I only do when I'm sick. There in the porcelin bowl was my salad completely undigested, and outside of the restroom door were my roommates howling with laughter. If I hadn't been so embarrased I would have suggested we give some mustard green salad with raspberry vinnegrette to the girl who always drank all the milk even though she never bought any milk, or cereal, or groceries for that matter. But with the humiliation fresh in my mind I refrained from making the suggestion because I thought it was too mean. Since then I have learned to enjoy mustard greens in cooked form as I enjoy most greens. Though they don't appeal to me as much as swiss chard or kale I do like them steamed in chicken broth with a little garlic, onion, red pepper flake, and olive oil.

Hi, tawny_24. I am so sorry that this has happened to you. Your roommates was so mean! I am glad that you like mustard greens cooked. They taste better this way anyway. I have never ate them raw myself. I am sure that it will make your stomach cringe with pain. I hope that you will never experience anyone mistreating you again like this, ever!

I do like mustard & turnip greens. I like mustard the best but i want them fresh when i cook them. I have never cooked can ones. I'm too picky i guess but i know they are clean when i cook them, lol. I put fried meat grease, salt, black pepper, a pod of hot pepper & a little sugar when i cook them. I usually buy them at the farmer's market & freeze a few boxes when i cook them.

Hello my friend cream97 Ji, I wish to remain pure vegetarian without onion and garlic. I add all condiments without butter etc. We have mny varities of condiments coming in the market specially tailored for many dishes like Chicken masala, Rajama-masala, sambar-powder, rasam powder etc. They are all availale in US at all Janata markets. May God bless You and have a great time.

I love mustard greens too. In fact, they are my favorite over turnip greens or collard greens. I cook mine by first simmering a couple of slices of bacon and then adding a tiny bit of water a dash of salt and pepper and simmer them on down. They are great with pork too!

hi cream97 oh yes I love both mustard and collard and spinach greens. like you said they are good for you too. green leafy veggies are what we are supposed to eat a lot of for all the good stuff in them. I just steam them in a little water and salt and pepper with a few bits of chopped onion for extra flavor. When I was a kid on the farm my mom would gather dandelion greens and cook them and we all loved them. you must gather the leaves before the dandelions bloom as if you wait they get too bitter. Greens are all a bit tart which I love but when they get huge they do turn more bitter. we can get the fresh collard and mustard greens and spinach in our grocery stores here and its even nicer than the canned ones. but canned are pretty good 'too. I imagine there are other spices or herbs you could add but I just like pepper and a little salt on mine.keep it simple I guess. now I cannot do any cooking here and I do miss that so much.

I love kale greens as well. I have cooked these too before. The mustard greens that I cooked from the can come already came pre-seasoned. So, I don't have to add as much of seasoning to it. I may add a little pure ground black pepper and butter. That is all. I know that your veggies were very yummy as you ate them. I love freshly grown veggies too!

I don't think I've ever had mustard greens, I've never tried them. I can't have too many green leafy vegetables, I know it sounds weird because everybody tells you they're good for you, and I guess they are but I'm on a certain medicine and if I have too many greens, it messes my medicine up, so I have to watch what I eat, even salads, I have to keep it consistent all the time. It sounds like it was good tho..

I am sorry that you are not able toenjoy as much mustard greens as you would like. I understand that being on a certain type of medicine can make your body react differently to many foods.

Oooooh! I love mustard greens, but, it depends on how they're cooked. Most people cook it so that it has that bitter taste to it, but, it takes a real pro to be able to cook it right! I also love spinach because when I was little I wanted to be as strong as Popeye. What a smart way to get kids to eat their vegetables! When I was younger I loved munching on carrots because I loved watching Captain Kangaroo feeding the bunny all those carrots! For some reason it just made the carrots look sooooo delicious. Nowadays the only way I really like my carrots is slightly cooked in soup, especially split pea soup! LOL! Purrs, Catwoman=^..^= & Mija

I have always thought that if I ate spinach, I would be as strong as Popeye is! And I always thought that I could hop like a rabbit if I ate carrots.. I used to get so hungry watching the bunny rabbit munch on all those carrots.
