I think bowler is responsible for winning.. bowlers take 20 tickets then a test win occurs while batsman make 800 runs but no genteel of win.. we see the latest example in India- Srilanka test series.

For sure you need to take 20 wickets to win a test match. But you cannot say that a bowler on his own can win the match as somebody also has to put the runs on the board. For e.g. if you look at the West Indies, their bowling attack has been quite decent over the past few years, but their batsmen have given them no chance whatsoever to maintain the pressure. Similarly, if you look at India over the last decade, their batsmen would pile the runs, but the bowlers simply could not take 20 wickets. You need a balance between the two to really win test matches. Cheers! Ram

True, but in places such as England and West Indies where there is much assistance to bowlers, batsmen are the key to winning the matches. Cheers! Ram

i agree but what is then when a batsman make triple century and bowler cant take 20 wicket in 5 days... batsman can only surety of draw a match or save a match... but for winning in a match is depend on bowler ability... in India... many pitch give support to batsman .. so India have a large drawn match no.. not won matches..

I think in Test the Bowlers are the chief architects of victory whereas in ODis the batsmen are contributing more to victory. This is because in ODIs there is no chance of a draw (a tie is possible but thats not the same as draw). But in a test the chance of a draw is always more than victory. And victory is impossible without taking 20 wickets. A century made by a batsman can earn you victory or a draw but 20 wickets taken by bowlers would always guarantee you win if the batsmen do well. if bowlers of both teams take 20 wickets then a result is guaranteed but if batsmen of both team hit centuries it can still be a draw as we saw in Ahmedabad. One double century and 6 centuries still resulted in a draw. So in tests Bowlers do win you matches more than batsmen.

You give a good analysis of test match and one day... but many measure points also affect the winning.... I am agree that bowler are most responsible for winning a test match..

I think that batsman are more responsible for winning a match since runs are counted every time a team plays a match. Even if you compare the cricket greats, Sachin Tendulkar is more liked by the crowd than Anil Kumble, both are match winners though in their own rights.

That is the reason .... of asking this question.... because cricket is a team game . then always batsman take credit... some time bowler.... but what about fielder... it is remarkable... am I right..

It is true that batsman hold the stiring of the test match because it is the main reason why so many audiences all over the state come to enjoy the match. But the truth is that the bowlers have to pay the price for it. A batsman might drag the match innings upto a personal score of 200 runs but the specialist bowler always have to put a magic spell of 40 to 60 overs and even more sometimes. So we legitimately make the bowlers a responsible and potential winner of a test match.

I agree..... not both.... type of player.. fielder must a good role... if a fielder can make a good match.... then a batsman who able make century ..out on ....0 .. its a games where a combination will work on all side... when a win is possible.

I think both good batsmen and good bowlers are required to win a test match. I a bowler take 20 wickets but batsmen are not able to score required runs then the effort put by bowler will be wasted. And if Batsmen made a huge score but bowler were not able to take wicket then the effort of batsmen get wasted. So, In opinion joint effort of bowlers and batsmen are required to win a test match.
