Today is my Birthday...Four Officers were Killed

United States
November 29, 2009 10:13pm CST
I turned 21 today, November 29th. Four police officers were killed today, November 29th. *4 officers were killed in Washington while having coffee together in a little shop before their shifts. 2 were killed while sitting down, a 3rd was killed as he stood up...and the 4th died after he struggled with the gunmen across the store. Police believe it was a target shooting, none of the other diner visitors or workers were shot, they were never even aimed at. It's really upsetting that something like this happened on my birthday, and it's going to be what I remember. *RIP* Sgt. Mark Renninger, 39 Officer Ronald Owens, 37 Officer Tina Griswold, 40 Officer Greg Richards 42

I'm sad for you Lily. A friend of mine, her sister was murdered on Christmas Eve. As Christmas gets closer she becomes quieter and you know what she is thinking. The slightest thing will set her of weeping inconsolably. Christmas will be a sad horrible time for her forever more. My nephew took his life over 2 years ago on my eldest grandchild's 18th birthday. My nephew and I became close a couple of months before he did the deed and so, from now on, whenever Scott's birthday roles around I will be thinking of and missing my nephew.

Thanks sweety. It's still a shock and it still makes absolutely no sense. He had a great job, beautiful home, new baby and a dog he was totally devoted to. I miss him too. I hope your birthday was good in spite of the awful occurrences.

Its a crying shame how the world values life. People just don't have any compasion for others. Humanity is a flawed race. My condoulances to those families effected by the deaths of those four men. And, on a liter more happy note... Happy Birthday. To bad you have a tradgey to remember on top of it.

There were actually 3 male police officers and one woman. *RIP* to all of them and yes, so sorry to their families. I never understand people, it really breaks my heart what we do to each other. I would love to live in a small town where people generally get along--too bad I'd still hear about all the other murders in the world, and it wouldn't seem any better. Don't you wish sometimes you could really change the world to make it a better place to live?

Yeah I do sometimes, but I also agree with one of the lines from one of my favorite movies. "Titanic" "I figure life is a gift and I don't intend on wasting it" -- Jack dawson. That rings so true, but not everyone is going to feel that way.

First let me say a happy, belated birthday to you. Hope you had a great day. I did hear about the four officers killed in Washington. Was a senseless, stupid crime. The suspect had a long history of violence yet he was back on the streets again. I just don't "get" the justice system here in our country. He raped a 13 year old girl and was still out on the streets. He should have spent the rest of his life in the slammer. My sympathy to the officer's families and friends. May they rest in peace.

hei.. HAPPY BELATED BIRTHDAY.. (sorry - i just got back from my inlaws and didnt have access to the internet at their place...) It is really upsetting to hear that the policemen were actually targetted for shooting.. i hope the case is solved soon and the guilty shooter gets caught soon. U shouldnt just focus on the 'bad' news - i am sure u still got plenty more to be thankful for...

I do have a lot of things to be thankful for :) Thank you. I know they have a suspect, who is a convict anyways...I'm not sure if they caught him yet. Plus there may be a second person who didn't shoot, but was there with him and ran with him. I hope they get caught too!

Both would definitely work for me. I never forget the job that police officers, firemen and the military do for us. They're always in my thoughts, and I just hate when things like this happens! Thank you!

I still have a hard time actually reading about this because I know it would affect me for quite a while . . . as I see it is affecting you too. I can't imagine what their families are going through. We have a few friends who are police officers. This breaks my heart.

I think I read something about the police cruisers being parked on the street, and that may have been what drew the gunman in...there are a couple cops that eat regularly at a restaurant we eat at every week...and this has got me thinking, what if something like that happened here, to me? I don't know what I would do if I had to witness something like that!

I have heard about the four officers being killed on the news. They thought they had the guy who shot them but when the squat team went into the house he was not there. They have put out a watch in many of the states because he has ties in Arkansas. My heart goes out to the family and friends of these officers. Happy late Birthday to you.

That is a sad thing to happen on your birthday. I hope that you will not be reminded of something that negative on your birthday for the rest of your life. I guess that is one of the risks involved with joining the police force. You are putting yourself out there as an enemy of these criminals. That is a sad fact of life that these dishonest people do exist and honest people often get in the way of their greed.

Oh, I'm sorry to hear that bad news on your birthday day, if they are your friends, it is the worst to you. it's really sad to everybody when they face to this kind of situation. But life have to be going on, we can't image what will happen tomorrow, all we can do is to be fine and happy today, and the government should try the best to protect people from safety. Anyway, be happy on you birthday. The best wish to you.

Oh no! I didn't know them personally. If I did I wouldn't be on the computer writing about it, especially on the same day. I'm happy I didn't know them because it probably would have broken my heart even more!

I was sorry to hear that these deaths happened on your birthday. It is very sad that this happened. People seem to not have a conscience anymore. It is as if they have shut off that part of their beings. My husband and I had a tragic event happen on our wedding anniversary. We were married on April 20. The shootings that happened at Columbine High School in Colorado also happened on our anniversary. We were so stunned and unsure how to react. We had also found out that a relative of mine was one of the victims. We had chosen not to go out and celebrate after the event. Instead we stayed home to keep our eyes and ears on what was going on. We really wanted to find out everything detail. I had cried when I found out all the information. Each anniversary, we set a side a special time to try and remember the lives that were lost that day.

I heard about this story yesterday. I'm sorry it coincided with your birthday :( The coffee shop owner is a retired policeman, so the restaurant was always a popular spot for the local police. I hope they get the guy. I heard that the fourth officer may have shot the suspect during the struggle. It's even worse that this was a small town. Not only the worst thing to happen to a police officer in the state of Washington, but the town must be devastated. The suspect shot the first two officers execution style. He either planned this, ...or he is mentally disturbed. People often take service members like police officers and firefighters for granted. Hopefully events like this will remind them of the day-to-day dangers those men and women are threatened with daily. They sacrifice their families and lives 24-7, whether they are on or off duty.
