What do you feel is the purpose for your life?

Are material possessions important to you? Is it your desire to get to the top of the corporate ladder, to make more and more money every year? If none of these things, what is important to you? Is it to be a great medical doctor who will help thousands of people, perhaps find a cure for Cancer? Do you feel that you are here to teach people how to live together in peace? Do you feel that you are a spiritual being who lived before coming here? If so are you hear to learn? Are you hear to remember who you are? Certainly we brought no material possessions into this world, and we'll take none out with us, therefore such things are only good for the brief time that we are here, nevertheless such things are of utmost importance to some people. What is it that you want to achieve here?

As a christian I believe that my purpose in life is to serve God and live by his Word (aka the Bible). I find it easier said than done though. Its easy for people to say that they are a christian but truely being a christian is what is most important. In the book of proverbs, it gives specific instruction on how a christian should act and live.

Hi pmcphail, Thank you for commenting. I think the golden rule sums it all up very well and also Christ said, as you have done to the least of my brothers, you have done to me. Blessings.

If I were asked this question six months ago, probably i would not even bother to read this. It was the time that i thought i had everything and i was just focused on enjoying life. Not know that life has a deeper meaning and purpose. Since then, i have lost both my businesses (my only sources of income) and we had a very traumatic experience because of the typhoon (our area was flooded for almost three weeks). It was at this time that i realized that i have been taking a lot of things in life for granted. It has been a very depressing time of my life, so depressing it made me think of giving up... Until a friend of mine told me not to loose hope, have a strong faith that everything will soon be better. Since then, I told myself that as soon as get out of this hard times, it will be my purpose to help the less fortunate not only thru material or financial help but more importantly help them to have a strong faith and hope for a better future...

Hi Chadster, Thank you for sharing your story and how it has clanged your life. I would like to know if you feel that what happened to you was for the best, because that would be my feeling? Blessings.

Yes, i guess it is for the best because it could not get any worse. I would not have realized so many things in my life if this did not happen. I pray a lot now more than ever and my faith is definitely put on the test... I will let you know as soon as things start to change for the better.

I think that money and possessions are a good thing if you share it with others. Money can be used to help the poor, bring happiness to others and provide a good life for you and your family ,so that you don't become a burden to others. It can be a blessing if a person is generous ,but it can be destructive if greediness takes over compassion.

Hi Mirita, Thanks for commenting and that is very true, it is when greed and selfishness takes over that things change. Blessings.

Hello Pose. To me, I think that I am trying to make both ends meets, materially and spiritually. I cannot find just one purpose good enough for me. If I am fruitful materially without being able to enjoy a colorful spirit, this kind of life is not what I desire to have. So it would be great if these two can be well combined. Such is my purpose for my life.

Wow. This is a great discussion. I have been doing a lot of thinking along these lines lately due to some recent issues in my family, but I feel like I will finally be able to put my feelings into words here. As far as what I am here for in the long-term, I really don't know. I (and everyone else for that matter) am a very complex person who has been through many different experiences. For example, I am a mother and I will always be a mother, but there will be a time when I no longer have children at home, and as each of my children moves out of the house, my role in their lives will change. So, with that said, for right now, the most important thing to me is to be a mother to my children full-time. Here's a little background information: From the time my first child was born until my 4th child was 6 months old, I was a stay-at-home mom. I would work part-time jobs here and there when I could, but the fact is that we ALWAYS had a hard time making ends meet, and there for awhile it became the norm that I did not have a car to drive because I couldn't afford to put gas in it. Once I had only 1/4 tank of gas left, I would leave the car parked just in case there was an emergency and my children and I would walk everywhere or I would wait for my husband to get home so that I could use his car to run to the grocery store - but I had to be careful about that also. When my youngest was 6 months old, my husband got hurt at work, and it became my responsibility to make sure the bills were paid. Since I had no job skills, I decided to take a 5 week CNA course and start working towards my nursing degree (keep in mind that this left my injured husband taking care of 4 kids) - life was not pretty. In the end, I now make more money than my husband ever did (and we certainly live like it). The thought of not being able to make ends meet again depresses me, but then I see how much guidance my children need that only I can give them which in turn depresses me because I work so much that I am not there to provide the necessary guidance they need. I am currently experiencing values conflict (do I pay my bills or do I spend more time with my kids?) and this leads me to explore what the purpose of my life is and how my actions now relate to that purpose (or don't). Sorry if I rambled, but thanks for letting me get all of this off of my chest!

Hi ramos, Thank you for sharing and that was a great response. I'm sure that there are times when we all wonder about these things. The time that you are able to spend with your kids is very special and remember that quality is more important than quanity. Blessings.

I feel like my purpose is to help children and to become a counselor. I would really like to become a play therapist or addiction counselor so that I can help people turn their lives around. I have always had the passion to help others, and that is the work I'm drawn to. I know that my career won't make a great deal of money, but that doesn't bother me because money doesn't create happiness. It's much more important to have a positive impact on people and change their lives for the better. I don't want to lead a selfish lifestyle, so I feel that anything I can do to serve others is well worth the time.

Hello Pose, I have been away from MyLot for a bit, and as I was browsing discussions this morning, this one caught my eye (as your discussions usually do). I have thought about this question a lot. I honestly cant say for sure exactly what my purpose is. I think that’s part of the fun of being alive. Guessing as to why one is alive, in this age and time, pondering the greater reasons why we do the things we do. I do think that my purpose in life has something to do with humor. What exactly, I am not exactly sure… but I do know that I am happiest when I make other people laugh. That’s not to say that I want to be a stand up comic and make people laugh for a living. But in my day to day interactions with people I like to use wit to lighten peoples moods and make them laugh and think. That being said, I think I would be sad to think that I am here for one purpose and one purpose only. I hope that my being here serves many purposes. I’d like to think of my existence as something like a skipping stone across a lake. If you take the stone and throw it into the water it may make a dramatic splash but it quickly sinks. But with just a little bit of skill you can skip the stone across the surface causing many little ripples, at the same time making the stone come to life as it jumps across the water.

Hi Tee, Thanks for that interesting and well thought out response. I agree that we need more humor in the world and especially if one can bring it into the workplace where many people are not comfortable to begin with. I like the part about the stone skipping over the water and touching in many different places. Part of the reason for that is that I grew up near the water and my friends and I would sometimes spend an hour or more skipping stones on the water on a still evening. It does make sense though because there may be many purposes for our being here, and they may not all surface at the same time. Wise thoughts. Blessings.

I believe my purpose right now is to live each day on how God would like me to live it. I have so many things I want to do and I am in the process of fulfilling them. Trying to reach my full capacity with work and everything around me. I believe that God has something better for me and all I have to do is to step forward and He will do the rest.

I am no materialistic person either, but you know we need them as long as we exist in this materialistic world itself . . . they are things we need for sure but yeah greed for such worldly things can one day land us into trouble... to be honest i have never thought much about my contribution to others or this life, all i know is that music interests me and i do play drums but i never gave a try to get into a professional line, i am engineering right now and i wish i will have some of the music still left with me... my grandfather and great grandfather both were priests and also musicians who used to compose some songs for our local church communion, i feel like i should keep some of their values with me ... i am not that strong in faith but i have always a reason to rejoice if i could serve in the best possible way i think i can play for religious songs, i have played in my church, i wish i continue bonding my interest in music with faith, certainly will be a good combination ...

I like to be successful in many areas. I would like to help people in need so that they can have a better life. I would like to write novels and short stories that will encourage and motivate people. If I could I want to end the wars in the world. But the most important thing is that I am here because of God's will and I will complete my task to be a good person and do rightful things, leaving all the sin act behind.

My purpose in life is, and always has been, to provide support and guidance to others. This is the role I played as the oldest of four children who had two working parents. My mother was too short tempered to listen to anyone's problems so my brother and sisters came to me. I raised four children, have two step-children and a total of nine grandchildren. I have many nieces and nephews and am still close to my ex-husband's sisters. Everyone always turns to me when they have a problem, need answers to a question or advice on a decision they have to make. During my career I worked in a college setting where my role was similar to the one I play in my personal life. My department was responsible for the college's computers and networks on the academic side. I had a staff of over 40...some of them students...and we provided support and assistance to students as well as instructors. I was the "go to" person for any type of problem.

I have been thinking alot about this recently... I am a Christian, so first of all my purpose for life is to bring glory to my creator. But other than that, the past few days I have been becoming aware of the problem of s*x slaves (it wouldn't let me say the dreaded "s" word) in america. There are around 300 in my city alone:-( I think my purpose might involve helping them in some way. And I think I am supposed to marry my girl and be a loving husband and father. What about you?
