Do you think that fear is our greatest enemy?

Bertrand once said that fear is one of the main sources of cruelty and to conquer fear is the beginning of wisdom. Elisabeth Kubler-Ross said, "Fear and guilt are the only enemies of man" and of course, most famously of all, Franklin Roosevelt said,"We have nothing to fear but fear itself." What are your thoughts on fear and how can we conquer it?

Fear prevents you from achieving success , demanding justice for all, and accepting others because they are different.

Fear! well if you ask me i would say it both. well we should fear where where we have to. fear is enemy where we think of something which is yet to be happen and has a possibility of may not happen. thats the fear we have to get rid off. fear makes a person weak , restless , anxious , of the situation.. sometimes fear will lead us to some direction instead of what to be done in that situation.

I believe that "love,"and"fear," are the only true emotions, and all the other emotions are but aspects of these two. If you truly love yourself your confidence will be enough to put all fear aside. Every decision we make( each day)will be based in love or fear. A decision based in love will be positive, while a fear based resolution will be negatively biased. As old saying goes - "Love makes the world go round!"

...Hi Pose123, My thought on the subject is that you begin with the premise that fear is an intangible, fear has no face, no identity. No name, no substance. We ourselves do ourselves the greatest harm by putting a face to it, we then claim fear and allow it to cause us mental harm. So we must withstand such tendencies and not take fear and make it real, it is not real. It is a mindset, we make fear a giant when it is a tiny little nothing that we make larger. Put fear in a box and send it to the depths of the ocean. You are the one in control of what you allow inside your pysche, do not be a friend to fear, it is not of any value to you whatsoever. Replace it with courage and the knowledge that you are in charge of your emotions and live life fully without fear of anything. Take care always.

Fear can keep people from doing a lot of things. Fear can keep people from going after what they really want. I battle with fear a lot. I'm a worry... when ever i do anything i always think what could happen if i do this? could this hurt me? will i regret this? There are things I'd love to do but don't do because of fears of not being good enough, or getting embarrassed. Sometimes it helps when i kinda tell myself it will be ok and nothing really bad can happen. Sometimes i just force myself to do things i fear and afterwords I'm so proud of myself. I agree with the quotes!

I dont think enemy is the exact word. Actually is a device which powerful figures use. Come to think of it, Israel and Jordian war was solely based on fear, rather than religion. People were afraid to cross the city.

Hi agustincl, Thank you for your comment but it is us who create fear in our mind, in reality fear doesn't exist. That is why when people are forced to face their fears, they wonder why they were so afraid. Blessings.

I don't think fear, guilt, and other emotions are our enemies at all. Our real enemies are the people who will take advantage of those emotions, and who will use them against us. Fear, guilt, anger, happiness, sadness, joy, love... all have their places and their proper uses, but when people use them against others, the emotions feel like the enemies when the people manipulating other people are the real enemies.

I agree that it is our greatest enemy that blocks our way from marching forward. If we don't fear that much, there are a lot more things that we can make.

Have you read the poem,'Where the mind is without fear,' by Rabindranath Tagore, the great philosopher and educationist? Well, he too stressed the importance of curbing fear in order to be better educated and wiser. He also stressed that parents and educators should not dictate to children and that a proper approach without instilling fear is the best method of training and educating the young. Yes, fear can lead to many unwanted behaviour in man. It is unhealthy to instill fear in young minds as it leads to insecure personalities.

hi pose, fear is something which sometimes keeps us from being ourselves, fear is something which sometimes creates a kind of invisible boundary between people, i am a sensitive person and i guess it is some sort of fear that keeps me from being open with people i haven't met earlier, how i wish i could be good in socializing with people, fear keeps us from many things, fear can be conquered with love and trust i guess

Hi voldrox, Thank you for your comment. Fear has been used to control people for thousands of years, but I believe that things are finally changing. There are those who think that we need fear but I'm not one of them. We need to be set free from fear.I too have always been a sensitive person, and it's only in recent years that I've been able to speak out. Love and trust are important tools in getting rid of fear and that includes love of self. Blessings.

I do think that fear is one of our greatest enemies (apart from Satan, as I am religious) because fear keeps us from doings things that we would've been able to do otherwise. However, with fear (to some extent), it also helps to prevent us from doing things we shouldn't be doing, such as jumping off a cliff. In my opinion, I still do believe that fear is one of our greatest enemies and that the way to conquer it would be to attack it head on. There's no way around fear. If you want to overcome the fear, you attack it and force yourself to not be scared of what it is you are fearful of.

Fear has its good side and its bad side. Fear can keep us away from danger, but fear can stop us from progressing. Fear of being caught and the penalty it brings can stop a would-be crim - but does nothing to change his nature. If he conquers the fear, it is NOT the beginning of wisdom. On the other hand, fear of failure can stop us from proceeding with an opportunity, and conquering that fear could be the beginning of wisdom. Fear often comes from pride, which I believe is the basis of most negative feelings. I might fear to say or do what I believe, because I fear what others will think of me. While fear can be beneficial, I believe it is mostly negative and will produce negative results.

Fear is only one of our emotions that many feel they could do without. We feel fear because it protects us from harm. Where we go wrong is we often feel fear where there is truly nothing to fear. This, I think, is fear born out of ignorance of a given situation. We truly do not know why something is the way it is but somehow it seems it could be bad so we fear it. Of course there are always people who will not let fear stop them from what ever they want to do. Often that cost them their lives. Conquering fear only comes with understanding whatever it may be that we do not understand. Once we know more about something then fear takes it's proper place. None of us are capable of illuminating fear completely. Nor should we. But if we come to know when we have that feeling it should motivate us to find out more about it, and soon, we are then on the right track for reducing it.

Hi jbrooks, Thanks for your response. Fear has been used to control people for as long as we have written history and no doubt before that and we are just in recent years beginning to realize the effects. Fear is a very poor teacher as we must all eventually learn. Blessings.

I don't know why we put things off, but if I had to guess, I'd say it has a lot to do with fear. Fear of failure, fear of pain, fear of rejection. Roosevelt was qutie right, we have nothing to fear but fear itself... so, let us brave to face anything...
