What do you guys think one should do in their old age when they are retired and have 24 hours to themselves. I am starting this discussion because my auntie is a live in care giver and the man she takes care of, he just sits in front of the tv from morning till night, only gets up to eat or use the watch room. I think in my old age I'd spend my time reading, giving money to charities and basically being an inspiration to people. What will you do?

You are right friend charity can be done anytime, I guess it is much easier to part with your money when you are old and do not need it so much but you are definitely right.

my dear friend. who says no to money? irrespective of the age. but may be its like we have the experience to manage it well. humanity , love , care , forgiveness , help stands far higher than money. but some may disagree to us. but your right. thats the age where we can manage our money with loads of experience

hi priscy25, You have a good plan when you reach an old age..Few people think to do the same way as you shared with us.. Elderly persons are people who are in the last stage of life..All the product of their achievements in life? can be seen in their old age.. Sad to say but many elder institutions exists because many people have different views why they wanted to turn over their elder relatives in those institutions.. Maybe because their families have different reasons, for whatever it is? it was their choice.. Elderly persons are considered weak persons,,Their bodies and minds also gets old..they have many illnesses in their body, so it means? they cannot do any more the things like any adolescent person can actually do.. Most of them? are acting like kids, who need to be pampered and some are violent too..It is their expressive mood swings or unwanted fears and expectancy in their lives, emotions and pains.. Your Auntie is very patient aside the fact that is her job.. But the best thing she can do to minimize the stubborness of her patient? Is let her gain the confidence and support she can give to the elderly person..Good communication and listening is required, and a bit of psychology on the kind of patient she has and a history of the patient background.. so your Auntie will not be having the hard time to adjust with the patient.. If she gained the confidence the patient gives to her? then all her suggestions and caring programs will be effective too.. Show the elderly person the care, understanding and security your auntie can give.. Let the patient realize that what your auntie is doing ? for his own GOOD.. ELderly persons suffer many worries and fear and patience is really a must for your auntie.. Good luck to your auntie..She will overcome that.. and as experiences goes by? she will gain expertise too..

when I'm old age, I would like to spend my free time to reading or travel around the world, give some help to my children or their children, to tell them how to make a living and how to enjoy the life. Basketball is my favorite sports, I would like to catch every NBA game on TV. I like Space science, I would like to spent more time and money to learn to know. To make life no regret, I want to get to know more which I have no time or money to do. That's what I really want.

When I am old I would prolly do alot of charity work and doing other ways to give back to the community and I can't take anything materialistic with me when I leave this world behind. Also I would like to watch cartoons and read and write. I would also like to garden and take care of animals but who really knows what I will be doing in old age.

True no one knows how they'll really end up in their old age but it is good to plan and when you plan you pray about it if you believe in God that it may come to pass. It is also true that you leave all the materialistic stuff behind, some old people are so stingy they'll not even give their own kids some money because they say they worked hard for it so their kids should also work hard for their own.

Hello. It would be good to keep active as far as one can. That would help the physical and mental health. If there are any hobbies one enjoys, that would be a good way to spend the time and keep active. For me, writing has been my favorite hobby since my high school days, writing short stories, articles, reviews, commentaries, etc. Ofcourse, whenever I can, I would go out and have a nice stroll along the parks.

writing is something I would do too, I love writing and i think even when one is old and grey and does not like writing so much, one could write a page a day about their lives and turn it into a book

I have decided to join some NGO which takes care of little children who are physically challenged when I grow old and retire and spend the rest of my days trying to help them in whatever way I can.

I guess you might be too old to help these physically challenged kids with your daily bathing and dressing needs, lol. But that's also a great idea cos your money can help

What a great topic. After a long day of study or cleaning or helping, I also ponder what I may do. What I will probably do is get a big screen tv, a very comfortable leather Lazy Boy chair and watch cable/satellite tv all day. Eating whatever junk food I can and slightly exercise so that I can continue this lifestyle.

Activities that keep the mind active and the body mobile are the best things to be done in your old age. For me,when I become old, I will spend my time doing charity work. And then I will join clubs and hobby groups to see my friends. I will do crosswords, read books, watch TV to keep myself updated, surf the net and talk to friends and family on the phone and most of all, seeing and visiting loved ones whenever there is the chance. Erik Erikson's Psychosocial theory states that people in the Late adult stage are in the "Ego integrity vs despair" stage. People at this age who have lived a full life will never feel any despair. But if they have issues or unfinished business they need to take care of, then by all means do they have to face the unfinished business of leaving their legacy to the next generation, sharing stories that inspire the younger generation.

I love your contribution, apparently getting you mind active in old age delays or prevents dimensia and it is really important to be at peace with all

At my old age, I want to take a rest once for a while in my life. I will do anything that I have never done before. Some of my time routine will be allocated to do my hobbies. I have a lot of hobbies such as gardening and playing chess. Most important thing that I must not forget is that I must serve my God well so that He can bless me and let me go to Heaven.

That's so true, make sure you do all you couldn't go when you had no time to do them. The only way you can go to heaven is when you have accepted Christ as your saviour though.

Hi priscy Some people think that they are too old to do any work and simply sit here and there and pass their time without any use to their hosts. After retirement, atleast we can try to do something which is helpful to our children like giving tutions to our grandchildren which do not need any physical work, or by sitting in one place they can chop the vegetables and give us for cooking or can water the plants or take the children to school and bring them back or can just read some news paper or magazines, just stroll in the garden and by doing breathing exercises they can keep themselves active all day long and keep fit, instead of sitting in front of the TV all day long

When I'm old, I plan on spending my free-time (and remainder of my precious life) travelling the world and meeting various strangers from a range of different nations and cultures, sharing their stories and traditions. I would also like to spend time with my family, helping them to create memories involving me to reflect upon when they get old. After I've done enough travelling and experienced my fair share of this beautiful world, I would enjoy finally being able to relax and take a break, revelling in my final moments in life with all the simple treats such as sitting before the TV with tea and biscuits, or reading a good book knowing I would be able to go a whole day being undisturbed. My biggest wish though, is to age in a healthy manner and have a happy old age where I can still be independent, self-reliant and not have to spend too much time in hospitals. I would also like to grow old without any regrets or begging for more time, knowing that I had lived a wonderful life that would be remembered fondly by younger generations, knowing that I hadn't wasted what little time I had spent on this beautiful earth.

I know a lot of people don't like the idea of retirement villages but I do. I can't think fo anything more boring than sitting at home with noone to talk to and nothing to do, even if you live with your kids they will be at work. At least at these villages here people amke fiends, play games watch movies etc. I plan on enjoying my old age!

If I retire, I have planned to be in charity works, whether it is from my church or from the United Nations. And in my free time, I want to learn piano or the harp, any instrument that I can play and enjoy alone. I want to learn to paint and write a book. Well, that's a lot isn't it ? But those are the things I've had a chance to try in my early years, but never continued because of marriage, the baby, the job, the divorce..etc.etc.. so if I could still do it..I will.
