How compatible are DVD's on a Blue Ray

I was wondering how much of a difference is there between Blue Ray and DVD, I know that DVD's are supposed to be compatible with Blue Ray players but I would like some input by people who actually use them, is it worthwhile? I have quite a collection of DVD's and was wondering if it compensates to get a new player?

All right. You can play DVds on a Blue Ray player and it will work very well and it will appear much better. The one thing that you cannot do is to play those HD dvds, the ones that had a competition with Blu Ray unless they are the combination Dvd. What that was, was on one side the movie was for the HD format and the other side was for the regular DVd. That meant you could play the side for the regular Dvd on your Blu Ray. By the way, these are quite cheap now.
It would not help getting a Blu Ray player, because one never knows if a company will just release a movie on blu Ray and not on regular format. It all depends on your budget, or whether someone will give you a Blu Ray dvd as a present.

Thank you so much for that, I was thinking of getting one as they are on sale in a lot of places due to Christmas promos but it's annoying to have several machines linked up. Had the same problem replacing my video collection with Dvds (still have some VHS that have not been launched yet) it was costly and didn't want to do it again. Same reason I waited for the 'war' between HD and Blue Ray to finish before thinking of getting machine or movies etc in the new format.

You think that is terrible? We are so out of things that we thought Beta would win over VHS and later HD over Blu Ray. Luckily we just recorded the Beta and could just give them away second hand, but with the Vhs, we are still buying dvd replacements. Now we have about 15 or so in the HD format and not all of them the combination that we can play the opposite side on the Blu Ray player. And now not all the movies are released on the combination dvd plus regular format. I know I really would love to get Cinderalla and Snow White on the combo form and could get them, but there is one movie that is not a Disney film that I want everyone to see even those who have the regular player. I still have the hd player by the way. I do not know what will happen when that goes. I will have to replace the other dvds.
Oh and thanks for the best response.

I feel your pain I also had a Beta, fortunately only had a few videos there that I quickly replaced, my cousin still has home movies on Super 8. He has been wanting to have them converted for ages. If I have to keep all the players one day my house will look like a museum.
