i suggest to go with core2-xtreme... moreover i7 is new and may require to change the old system for it to be compatible.. core2-xtrme is great for gaming as also mentioned by intel.. Keep lotting....

Core i7 is the newest processor from intel. But it comes with a very stiff price. Getting one would require new mother board and sets of memory (DDR3). The only usable part from your old system might be the DVD drive and hard disk. GPU i think should be upgraded as well to cope up with the speed of this new processor, but i might be wrong.

Is i7 available in India right now??????? I don't think so..............Beside it will be very costly and will require DDR3 ram.................I have 4gb of DDR2 ram which i would like to use again............... so i7 is not a good preference for me.............. This lefts me with either Quadcore or core-2-extreme......

Quadrocore is good compared to core-2 duo. You may seen the video of intel, what does the multiple cores do when you have them, compared to single core processors. Check out the video on intel site. The more number of cores you have, more number of processes can be simultaneously run, without being scheduled or with less number of scheduling processes. When you wanna run a bunch of processes simultaneously, multi-core, or any advanced processor is a must. But just for gaming, I think any processor is sufficient.

Intel has launched new Core i7-980x it has 6 core package and also provides 8 Mb cache pair, so for gaming you may go for it. just check out Acer aspires new predator G7750 its awesome but not in India still you can order it on amezon.com. it has 12 Gb of RAM and 2.5 Tb HDD 8 Mb cache pair. u will definitely like it.

Before the answer, a question: What's with all those stretched ellipses? It doesn't help you being more properly understood. Now, as to your real question: Depends on what you can afford. I mean, it's a no brainer that the Extreme editions would be preferable since they are superior to the standard QuadCores. Or did you meant a dual core Extreme CPU? Anyway, some games are made to make use of multi-core technology in which case a quad core can be plenty helpful, even if not Extreme edition. More processing power, all the cache gets used, so it works to a reasonable level. If what you want however is to play older games, or altogether games that are single-threaded and thus run on only one core, then in that case having one, two or four cores will be same; at that point it becomes important to get a CPU with a high clock speed per core as well as cache. I guess this isn't too clear, but your question isn't too explicit, because just saying "Core-2-Extreme" doesn't mean much, since "Core 2" is just another model name... there are both dual and quad core CPUs under this name and also on the Extreme models. So in an analogy, you're asking us to compare and pick between a small, dry orange and a big, juicy one.

I think it depends on the game. If the game supports 4 processor then Quadcore is better.
