Do you think that teachers should give homework on weekends?

Some teachers will give out homework no matter what day it is. Some refuse to give it to students on weekends, however. Personally, I don't care whether I get homework or not because I have more days than usual to complete it. What do you think?

I probably disagree with most parents and I do not think homework ought to be given out at all. This does not mean I feel kids should have nothing to do in order to practice and demonstrate competence, but I do not believe this is accomplished by giving homework assignments. I would say if any work is to be given at all, there should be ample time given during class to complete it, and if not finished, then it is the student's responsibility to take it home to complete. I also believe students should be allowed to 'test out' - that is if they gain the knowledge another way, they could take the test early and if they demonstrated competence, they could get their cert, degree, diploma etc and be done with formal lessons. I also believe if something is to be given, send it with the student on Monday and allow them the whole week to complete it, including any extra time in class they may end up having. I know I would not be spending MY weekend dealing with something I didn't want to do anyway.

Personally I don't like homework on weekends because its a high probability that you won't do them no matter how much free time you have. Of course eventually they have to be done but you don't feel that stress over the fact that you have to give the project tomorrow, you keep on saying 'I'll do it in an hours, I'll start in the afternoon, no maybe tomorrow, I have lots of time' and so on and so forth.

Jerro39, I remember I always got home work on the weekend and Holidays too and a Test that Monday after a Holiday this like 30 years ago. Teachers beleived in homework and now they do not. It now worth much toward your grades it is tests for most teachers. It way teachers get back more freedom for there weekend etc.. less work and more money in there pocket. Thanks Sincerely Unqiue16

Well, I guess it would depend on the grade level you are referring to. If it is elementary through high school, no, students should not have homework over the weekends or holidays. They have 13 years of "mandatory" school to go through. Just as a work week is 40 hours, so should a school week. If you are talking about college or university, most "higher" education courses are only one to three days a week, so weekend or holiday homework is ok.

jerro39, As far as i know, now a days, homework or take home assignments are discouraged. teachers prefer to give seatwork rather than homework because in seatwork students could ask questions to their teacher whenever there are things they dont understand. teachers could also see to it that the students are the one doing the seatwork than bring home assignments that they could ask their parents, siblings, and others to do their assignments.

Teachers have a lot of ground to cover and not much time to do it in. I think that homework on the weekends is perfectly legitimate within reason. Weekend homework should never be assigned to students who are in 2nd grade or below. It is also a good idea to try to make weekend homework more fun than homework during the week.
