Martial Law in Maguindanao: Agree or not?

Philippines
December 4, 2009 7:14pm CST
This morning, President Arroyo declared Martial Law in Maguindanao. According to the news, this was due made to provide peace and order in the said province since there had been reports that groups of heavily armed people who are trying to protect the Ampatuans. As for me, if the President thinks that this is the best way to serve justice to the Maguindanao massacre then so be it as long as it is according to the Constitution. What do you think? Meanwhile, here is the link to the news report - http://angelcuala.blogspot.com/2009/12/president-arroyo-declared-martial-law.html

For your information theres a big difference between martial arts and martial law both have something to do with violence but in a different context.

I think username182 is funny. Of course, for us Filipinos, Martial law is a very very serious issue especially as we have had such a very bad experience from it in the past. Btw, Philippines is a free country, you can do whatever martial arts or any arts you want provided it is not against morals, standards, law, and the public peace.

hello there blogger, this maybe the solution of the government now but that doesn't mean it's the best one, warrantless arrests? they'd better be sure it's target is on the possible suspects on the recent massacre and not ordinary civilians. this declaration is very alarming even in this time, where we are supposed to be a truly free nation now? yes, this declaration will last 60 days as they said it would. but still is alarming and we should watch it carefully.

I think that the government did the right thing. The only way to control dictators is to show them who has more powers. The ampatuans, even if the are not the ones responsible for the Maguindanao massacre, should have made a formal invstigation the moment those people went missing. More than 50 people went missing and not one of their 'public servants' inquired or investigated. It is surely either a bad sign of negligence or guilt that the Arroyo administration is dealing with.

Well they are saying that the reason behind is the imminent rebellion they have gotten in the province. They say that the judicial system was not working in the area since no Judges in the province were willing to take the case. The Local Government was virtually not working anymore since no one is reporting anymore. That is why they declared Martial Law in the area. But according to many constitutional experts there is no basis for declaring martial law since the "imminent danger" provision was removed from the constitution. The presence of military in the area is supposed to be enough already to maintain the peace and order as there is no armed conflict happening in the area after the massacre. There may be planned movements from within the area but I guess military can still stop them with the situation right now. With the cache of arms uncovered is still not sufficient to declare it. I am not an expert on this matter but I think I am siding with the second opinion. I am not seeing any armed conflict in the area as of this moment and there is almost no resistance that I feel is happening with the arrest of the ampatuans.

I think she's doing it the right way.. GOOD for her!! haha =D At least she thinks about her citizens and their safety.. She knows what's right and wrong, and thus making her a well liked, loved, president of philippines.. haha That should be the way, and not protecting the Ampatuans, even though they did alot to help her secure votes during elections.. I believe she has the confidence in herself to make things right

Though Martial Law always gave a bad impression and emotional torture for most of us especially for people who are born during this era at the Marcos regime, I find this a good solution to the worsening condition in Maguindanao. I am just hoping this will not spread in the entire Mindanao and will be lifted as soon as peace and order will be settled in Maguindanao and the real perpetrators of the Maguindanao massacre will be brought to justice.

The whole Martial Law thing in Maguindanao was precautionary. To make sure no citizen in Maguindanao would experience the resent massacre. The military are positioned there to protect the citizens and this Martial Law isn't like back in the time of Marcos and the people in Maguidanao are not brutally harassed by the military either. They are well aware of the situation why the government took such a leap.

hello, fatherblogger! i agree with you. the trouble in maguindanao has come to a point where "democracy" wouldn't work anymore. just look at the mansions that this clan owns - then look at the standard of living of the residents in the area. i just hope that this move will help bring peace to that area.

Well, i agree with that decision... no matter what other politicians say... a martial law is needed in that area... since it is obvious that the government officials there are the source of lawlessness... A lot of people are afraid of martial law because of what Pres. Marcos did... but if it is badly needed and that there powers of the president is still at bay... then it can definitely help...

this is a good sign the govt is serious in helping the victims bring them to justice. jail all the culprits involved in the said massacre. they deserve to be given execution or should i say public execution.

When there's a lot of tension among people you have to take measures before things go wrong again. If I would be Arroyo I would send the army to those clans and put them down. So much bad news is coming from the Philippines lately that I would understand frustration among the government and inhabitants.

Well, I have to say that I disagree to the intermediate action of the government. It is unnecessary to declare Martial Law because the military and police are only disarming and arresting the Ampatuans. It's a dumb thing to do, President Arroyo should first considered the reactions of the Filipinoes.

If this would bring peace and order to the Filipinos in Maguindanao, then so be it. The massacre was horrible and as president, she should do everything in her power to serve justice.

My position is in the negative. To emphasize I still seek justice to what had happened in maguindanao. Only that, declaration of martial law can only be availed of in cases of rebellion or invasion. Reports would say that there are none as of the moment. There was never a report or incident that would suggest an occurence of rebellion, most likely an invasion of some sort. Although, in fairness to the President, she acted upon on an immediate information gathered within maguindanao, but constituionaly, such declaration is never permitted.

I hope it's implemented well, and not add to the tension already existing there. If the excesses of the previous martial law start to come out again, then it should be terminated. There should be someone monitoring the military during the implementation of Martial Law. Happy mylotting.

I would agree to you guys, if this will help solve and find justice to those who have been victims of the crime then i would say it is really a very good move by the government. I just hope this move will be a success.
