Road hold ups today. What holds you up on the roads.

Earlier my short twenty minute drive each way to take my son to play at the house of his best friend was considerably extended by hold ups on the road. On the way there I duly noted that the police were stopping everyone on the return side of the road and knew I would have to pass them on the way back. I dropped my son and then on the lane coming back to the main road had a rather pleasant minute wait as hundreds of goats crossed in front of the car. This isn't unusual only today it was done in an unusual way. Usually a large herd of them push together but today they crossed in an orderly line, one after the other. There were cream ones, black ones and brown ones, some of the latter looking more like minature horses. I then saw that the bigger goats which were marked with plasic cards in both ears, were helping the young kids across. It was a lovely sight. The very last goats to cross were obviously the penisioner goats. So onto the police stop, knowing they were stopping everyone and I had as usual not a single paper on me despite it being the law and its over 4 years since they last stopped me. So I played the nepotism game to my advantage and asked why they were stopping me in the rain when I was driving back from the house of........ who happens to have the big political clout in this area and to whom the police locally must answer to. Not a single paper requested and a smiley wave on. So what holds you up on the roads? Does it bother you, how do you deal with it?

Too much traffic, accidents, road construction... Never goats. Once it was cattle being herded onto a truck. I usually have all my papers though. What's holding you up getting yours? (evil grin)

I was just reminded ofthis reading about the goats. our local bus stopped for this herd of deer who were running crazed down the center of Newport Boulevard trying to get away from the tustin hills fire storm. their hides were smoking, their eyes looked'crazed and they were just completely panicked. the forest and game people had to get trucks and load them on and take them to the nearest forest that was not on fire. the fire burned to within a mile or so of our apartment complex. the air was so bad we had to keep the windows shut and use the air conditioner. these wild fires were set by one arsonist. Luckily altho things are horribly dry this late fall and winter, we have not had another horrid wild fire.

I don't carry my passport around but I always have my driver's license. Among other things it's used for identification when I'm paying for something (not cash)...

Oh I have them but don't want to carry them around everywhere, it would be a nightmare if they got lost. Whoever heard of carrying things like a driving licence and passport around just in case once every 4 years the police stop you. My tax and insurance sit on the windscreen. Saying that the Greek is fighting a hefty fine for nipping down to his local beach with no papers and no bribe money when he went down on the motorbike without helmet. I'm not sure what he hopes to achieve by fighting it as it is illegal on all counts - I suppose he's going to argue that as he was only going for a swim he couldn't bribe the policeman.

I don't drive, but I have been inside many veichals with other people when throughout my life when the car, or truck or whatever I was in, was held up by something or other. Back in St. Augustine, it was the bridge of Lions. My bus driver used to say I was cursed because after I boarded the bridge would decide that was the right time to open. Same in the car with my family as well. Now a days its regular road hazards, guard rail repairs, school crossings, trains, oh yes and last but not least wet slippery roads. I would generally deal with the situation in one of three ways. One, I would complain to the driver , two sleep, or three twitch in my seat until the episode ended while doing the endless chatter of questions that while the driver may not admit it now that I look back on it, I must have anoyed the living daylights out of them. Of course the aformentioned complaining was a direct result of low blood sugar and little to no access to food naturally. Of course at the time I didn't realize my blood sugar was low.

Hi kaylachan, you paint the most amusing picture there and make me glad that whilst I waited for the goats to cross I did not have a twitching, chattering questioning type in the passenger seat complaining. I don't understand about the bridge of Lions, if it needs crossing why does it open only at certain times, how do people get across at other times? I'm most glad to hear that your low blood sugar has been pinpointed.

The bridge of Lions is a Manually-operated draw bridge that crosses the inlet waterway or something like that. The operators didn't always open the bridge during its scheduled times, and more often or not they would open it when our bus decided to cross. I used to get teased a lot about it too.

Thanks for that, that's interesting. So you're basically the bridge jinx.

i can't say we have goat crossings, but we do have the occasional escaped cows from one of the milk farms up here.. most times it's either road work or accidents. people seem to think stop signs don't apply to them unless they see their name on it.

Hi scarlet, well the odd escaped cow doesn't sound too bad. Everyone has mentioned road accidents and road works, they are both very regular features here too, especially the accidents.

I ordered it this morning when I was out and they'll bring it up tomorrow, at least its a lower price than last year, but I'm going to try and be extra frugal and have only ordered half a tank and it is indeed really cold today as no sunshine to warm the place up. But as yet I've not had the boiler checked out which it supposed to be done before turning it all on. The Greeks says he can do it so I'll see if he can get driven down tomorrow as he'll be no use at all if he drives 2 hours here on that leg of his. Are you able to keep your place all cosy and warm then Aunty. It seems from the amount of electric that gets used in the US on things we don't use it on that it probably isn't very pricey.

LMAO If goats were in the road here, they would be road kill (smashed animal in the road). No one would stop unless they were afraid the goat would damage their auto. Here the only things that blocks traffic are accidents and idiots trying to merge onto another highway.

Its usually road works, traffic or "Reginald Molehusbands" (overly cautious drivers...often older men in hats) - nothing as exciting as goat parades. I've just had a really good run home from my son's place as there was so little traffic around. I'm usually quite patient as I tend to allow myself more time than I need if I have to be somewhere for a specific time.

I used to live in coastal areas which would be "plagued" with holiday drivers... and holiday pedestrians which can be equally irritating!

Hi Wizzywig, I remember you set off early for work to avoid traffic hold ups. I have never before heard your phrase to describe the Sunday driver type, good one.. Goat parades are much nicer than traffic jams of which we get suprisingly few, though we are inflicted with the 'tourist driver' in the summer which is extremely taxing as some of the worse ones seem incapable of adjusting to driving on the right hand side of the road, maybe they aren't sure as Greeks do tend to drive in the middle.

Ahhh, the holiday drivers are a total menace on the mountain road to town as it is actually very dangerous. The pedestrians are found clogging the village streets instead of the pavement.

hi thea I am one of the very few Californians who do not drive and do not have a car, but my friend Nelda takes me around to various p laces I need to go. the last time we were on the freeway the traffic suddenly slowed and almost came to a complete stop then would move forward a few hundred feet then stop and as curious as we were we never did find out what the hold up was because quite suddenly it all started moving again as though nothing had ever happened. we must have thirty to forty minutes just crawling along. Ifound out later a furniture co. truck lost several large pieces of furniture and those had to be taken out of the lanes on the freeway. I am just glad there were no accidents involved in it. One time on the freeway a keg of nails fell off the back of a truck and ten cars were stopped with leaking tires, one of which was our pickup, all four tires were flattened, what a mess. the handsome man in the chauffer driven limosene fared without a tire loss. he insisted on using his aaa card to take us to his own tire shop where he paid for four new tires then this angel took us to oneof his restaurants for dinner, also he paid it, cometo find out this Italian man owned a chain of italian restaurants and a chain of tire shops and was very very wealthy. and now I do not remember the man's name. how stupid of me. this was long long ago.myson was six, my little daughter was five, we lost her when she was 8.anyway they were home safe with my mom. my mom was really worried as we were so late getting home. But all was well that ended well. lol

Hi Hatley, that's a great story but I'm unsure, was the handsome angel in the limousine actually responsible in any way for the nails falling off the truck, or was he just indeed an angel? Even if he was responsible he certainly took care of it wonderfully. We don't have freeways here or long hold ups by things on them as we don't have them, but had many many long holdups with crawling cars on motorways in the UK with no clue usually as to why the hold up was caused. The only thing here resembling traffic jams are at certain times of day up in town where everyone is going somewhere at the same time but I'm usually going in the opposite direction so am spared.

What usually hold people up here is either an accident or road construction on the road. There has been a few time when a cow and a horse held the traffic up but that does not happen very much.

Hi happy, all of the above are also regular hold ups here as well, except the horse. I don't think I've ever actually seen a horse in Greece, well not in my part, but donkeys are a very frequent sight. They are usually very good on roads and keep to the edge when working, but in a local village there are two which roam the narrow streets and I was once held up with them for ages as it was impossible to turn the car round as they were so busy licking the bonnet.

Thea! Shameless name dropping and string pulling! I'm shocked! The goats story is lovely, wish I had seen it. You'll have to keep a camcorder in the car for the next time. In linlithgow, where I'm orignally from, there are swans whose home is at the loch, and during the breeding season, it seems like they like to come out and show off their babies. But they like to come up onto the high street, and they use a particular split zebra crossing to get across the road. I've had to stop a couple of times for them to use the crossing, and looking into the other cars, you can see the big grins on the drivers faces as they watch this spectacle. Animals aren't daft, and must have figured out it's the safest way to cross the road.

Hi Lou, swans on a zebra crossingthat I would love to see. How clever of them to cross where the crossing allows it, I take it it's the traditional kind and not press a button for the green man, othewise they'd be beak butting.

Here in India we are perpetually repairing roads which causes road blocks and then there are processions of all kinds which include processions of politicians, weddings, festivals, strikers and last but not the least bad drivers who do not follow rules. There is also heavy traffic on the roads and the roads are so congested that ones drives at snail pace.

Hi allknowing, that sounds like heavy congestion which is just about the most boring kind of hold up. Processions of strikers indeed, thats a new one on me, our strikers usually just tag a day onto the weekend and go to the beach. We are lucky here in not having traffic congestion and so far I have no wish at all to drive through the heavily congested, polluted city of Athens.
