Have you ever seen a praying mantis?

Praying Mantis - Praying Mantis on my porch. He didn't seem to mind getting his pic taken.

In real life? I had one living on my porch for about 2 weeks. Everyday he was somewhere new. But he was always there.

I have seen several of them. I have lived in the country off and on in my life and used to come across them quite frequently. When my boys were little they loved to watch them walk around and they would just laugh. Not sure why they thought it was so funny, but they sure had a great time seeing them walk.

Yes, I have seen a praying mantis, one lived in my garden. By the way, the female is the big green one. She eats her partner after mating, he'd be a small brown one.

Thank you for clarifying that for me. I do know that the female eats the mate's head. I think I was just using "he" as a reference rather then "it."

WoW cool pic ~ did you take it? THats a massive praying mantis! In South Africa we have lots of them - but they are much smaller and less scary looking. My mother always says they are holy creatures - I can't remember in which culture. But apparently its like super bad luck to kill a praying mantis.

Let me first start by saying all of your pictures are very nice. I too enjoy photography. I have seen several praying Mantis. They are facinating creatures. I believe the female rips the head off the male after they mate. Kind of scary huh? I guess even a bug knows men are worthless..LOL No that was just a joke I don't think men are worthless.

they were protected for a while here- i guess it was illegal to kill them b/c they were endangered. Then one day while taking my son to school we saw one on the steps going up to the entrance. The next day we saw one near there and another in the bushes. Then I read somewhere that they were good again. They are pretty cool but quite evil to their own.

Yes, we had one in out hallway this year, along with a walking stick. Amazing insects. I remember a few years ago we had a praying mantis in our car. No one wanted to touch it, so it stayed in the car for about a week.

praying mantis - They really do look like they are praying - but I reckon this one that was captured on an outdoor plant on the porch is more likely prey ing (on aphids, yum?)
I have seen them in person... we get them here frequently - sometimes green sometimes brown. I find them absolutely fascinating and could probably observe them for hours if I did not have other responsibilities to take care of. here is one that was on some of the plants we have outside.

we see heaps of them daily, more in the warmer months. I guess it depends where in the globe you live, they seem to enjoy warmer climates
