Actually I've thought it was starting to go a few months back just how it sounded heating up and that it toooook sooooooooooooo flip'n long to preheat. Well tonight I started it to preheat abt 4pm, it's after 5pm now it's still pre heating and our meal of tater-tot caserole was barely warm. And hubby had commented after comming in & out of the house a few times it smelled like gas. Definatly not safe to use. I suppose we have gotten our use out of it as it would be 8 yrs old this upcomming spring. Sadly we just replaced our washer a few months ago and now this..... *sigh* The good news just keeps on comming lately & that my friends is scarcasim. I guess I will have to bust my butt some way some how to help pay for this an our bills. Or when in doubt there's always cheaper alternatives, college kids use various small appliances all the time in dorm rooms.

it's a gas oven? are you certain it just doesn't need the nozzles replaced? if they're clogged,it would hamper the release into the oven. if they have carbon buildup, replacement would be way cheaper than a whole new stove.

there's one under each set of two top burners in the middle, one in the baking box area under the plate on the bottom toward the front (where you light it if it goes out) and if you have a seperate broiler there's usually one in there too.

Bummer. Have you checked for a gas leak in the lines and or oven at all? If it's the line the oven may not be the culprit then. 8 years old only? It shopuld still be good in my eyes. They usually last many years under normal wear4 and tear. Ours is at least 20 years old I'd say and works good still. Check for a gas leak in the lines, or better yet have the gas company do it. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB!!~

If there was a leak in the line wouldn't the house smell slightly like gas even when it's not on?

you might also consider a used place or scratch and dent have you considered seeing if it can be fixed?

I'd prefer to see if it could be repaired as well. We'll have to see who we could call.

I don't know if you live in a place with freecycle, but I've seen some good stuff go thru there, just not stuff I could use or transport even if I GOT them!

Before going through such a costly expense, I'd let my fingers do the walking in the phone book. See if a repair person may be the fix you are looking for. I did that with our dish washer. $50. And the dishes are getting clean 2 years later.

My aunt thinks it could be our element in the oven. But the pre-heat isn't working right either & hasn't for some time... hubby thought I was imagining that one.... it could be "pre heating" for over an hour and still have the indicator light on.

As long as your stove top works, you're good. I was without an oven for a year and learned a lot of different ways to cook things! Your crockpot can become your oven for bread, biscuits, etc. Look up some crockpot baking recipes, you'll be surprised how versatile they are!

Yep I saw a baking recipie before in the crock but I have yet to try using the crock to bake. I do have a small toaster oven I've made bread & cookies in before. I also have a george foreman and really unless something "has" to be baked I think we will be ok. Too many headaches at the same time.

Hi there, Our oven has packed up too so did our under counter fridge and freezer. We solved the problem by visiting out local Freecycle group. From freecycle managed to obtain an oven and upright fridge freezer which is only 2 months old. The joy of freecycle is that everything is free. Visit Yahoo.com and go to the groups section. In groups look for Freecycle then look for your local area. Once you find your area register and sign in, you can post a *Wanted* if you need anything or you can reply to peoples *Offers* if you want something that they offer. Everything is free except you need to collect the item you have selected or have requested a Wanted for. Hope this helps... It certianly helped us especially in todays current recession. Chris.

I don't bother with freecycle. Unless you are online the minute the offer posts it's taken so to me the concept is great but a wast of time if you can't sit by your pc all day long waiting for something you could use.

hi snugglebunnies did you check the gas line for a leak as Grandpa Bob suggested it might be that instead of your stove, hope so as you can get the gas company to repair it 'surely. otherwise check places like sears for christmas saleson gas stoves since you may get a break. gas leaking is really so' dangerous too. I know this is sure not a great time for appliances to go kerflooey. hope you have good luck with this.

I don't think it's an actual gas line leak. Something with the oven alone and only when the oven part is on and no other time is there a smell. Plus it doesn't sound right, you can hear a flickering like sound when it's on wich I told my hubby about months ago but no real problems beyond it preheating correctly til now.

Gas oven problems. Hmm?? If it is a glow bar oven, the glow bar is probably going bad. It opens the gas valve when it gets hot enough. Not all glow bars are alike. make sure you get the right one for your stove. If you have a standing pilot model, make sure the pilot is clean. Blow it out. If it is clean, the MS gas valve is probably bad. There could be other things wrong that could cause your problem but what I said usually is what goes wrong first. Good luck! Be careful. You know you are working with gas.

thanks for the ideas I'll share them w/ hubby. The fact that it's gas is why he'd rather just get a new one and not deal w/ further problems as you said gas is dangerous when things are going right.
