external hardrives are a fad today, but I want one for necessity. I am an architecture student and our thesis is computer generated, my laptop memory is almost full. The Autocad and Revit files are very big, and I don't think my remaining memory can't suffice that. All data are important so I can' just erase them. I need an alternative way to store them. I thought of usb but they are the same amount as external hardrives so why bother. CDs have lifespans, I learned that from experience haha. I need money for that, could anyone be so kind hahaha.

Yeah if you are using AutoCad then you might as well invest in a big hardrive as an architect it will come in handy. I have a 500g hardrive on my Desktop and a 1 Terabite My Book and now it is getting kind of full.

Well kind of full, I need to burn some DVDs of the movies I have been watching so I can Delete them. LOL I think the 160g is a good starting point. plus it will be small and portable so that probably helps for school.

Really? Your 1 terrabite is getting full? And here I am thinking of buying a 160gb hardrive. But its all I can afford for now, when I graduate, and I still need it, I'll buy something with bigger memory hehe.

No, I do not have an external hard drive. I dont' really have all that much on my computer and have never been close to running out of memory. I do sometimes want one to back up stuff, but I usually use alternative methods for that, like saving to a dvd or emailing it to myself with an attachment. I back up my writing that way every now and then. But good luck with your external hard drive.

me too i don't have one..i agree with you, make back-ups like emailing some files, or store it in an online storage. Nowadays there were online storage that can handle up to 50gb..but much better if you have external hard drive but the problem is the money dude..for now use the alternative one.

Hi kafueen Im not sure what kind of money that you might have on hand, but I think that they are not too expensive if you look in the right place. My son has one that is called "MY BOOK". It is an external hard drive with plenty of space. He cost him about $35. If you want to PM me I can give you the sites that he shops from if you don't have any. Have a nice day and keep smiling my friend.

Yes, I own a 4 terrabyte external hard drive so I could store all my backup, music, movies, pictures, documents, programs and not to mention games. The most I have is a 8 gigabyte usb which is only useful for temporary storage and not permenantly. Cds, no I don't use them anymore, they've become out of fashion to me, especially when you compare it to the external hard drive and usb drive. It's true that some of the very high storage hard drives, such as 500 terrabytes can be very expensive, but do you really need that much? For me, no that's why I spend $50 on seperate 4 terrabyte hard drives, I find it far more essential than spending over $700 usd on something that you will never fill up.

I don't have an external hard drive, and I don't have many stuff on my computer, and I already backup the important one one the dropbox, but I think it's better to have an external hard drive, if you really have many files, you can backup your important one on the external one, and then you won't lose any files, I know the external hard drive is expensive, but I think it worth to buy.

Well, External Harddrive is worth to buy for me. I bought a laptop with only 60 GB of harddisk capacity. It will be pretty expensive if I want to replace the Harddisk of my laptop to bigger one. I often download music and video, thus, my harddisk can not afford it. Burning to CD or DVD is very painful as loading time is a little longer and burning time is just pain in the a*s! Not to mention they only can carry 750MB (CD) or 4-8GB(DVD) at a time. At that time I decided to buy a Pendrive from Malaysia. It cost me 65$ at that time, but it does worth it. I've got extra 250GB of storage. Data transfer between my laptop to external Harddrive also fast enough. I'm a little confused with your statement "I thought of USB but they are the same amount as external harddrives so why bother". USB flash disk (if this what you meant) definitely smaller and slower than External HD (capacity range from 1GB-16GB as far as I know). Well, if you don't really want to replace your laptop hard disk, then I suggest you to buy one.

My external Hardrive i use for my backups of my laptop, and just to store things for the extra capacity. Mine is from Western Digital too, 320GB, small in a nice design. I got it as a present from my boyfriend. But there is several external hardrives out there at a decent price, so it just depends on the size you need and the money you have available...

Kafueenu i can't give you money coz i need one for myself hehe.. .. well you certainly need one, it would be better not to completely fill up your computer hard disk coz it will also slow down your computer, well external hard drives are cool and yes they do store a lot! and they don't come that cheap either but yeah not too expensive either, for that much money it will surely be of much good use, i want to have one myself and store lots and lots, well i want one primarily for the purpose of entertainment but yeah it will come in handy coz even i am engineering right now and might need it, well external hard disks come most handy when we are formatting our computer, we could create all the back up we need and swoosh! our computer has been renewed and later on transfer what we needed, external hard drives are quite useful

Yeh i do, they're pretty cool. I use mine regularly for college but i also put quite alot of videos and music on mine because they can take up alot of space on the internal hard drive. I have a portable western digital passport i think. 250GB which is plenty fo me :)

I had an external hard drive with all my information on it and one day it failed and I lost all the information on it.. I've never had a failed hard drive in an actual computer but I've had 2 external hard drives now die.. Depending what the data is its a good option... Otherwise cd's or dvd's will work for me until another cost effective option comes...

Hi!! I have a 160GB portable hard disk of Western Digital in addition to my 160GB hard disk attached to my PC.The 160 GB hard disk was proving to be less as far as the folders and files in my PC were concerned so I got a portable hard disk of 160GB which helped me to store my excess files mostly movies into the portable drive.I have a LAN at my area so I get loads of movie everyday and all this movies go to my portable drive as my PC's hard disk is full with softwares and other files. The portable disk is really good and you can carry it along with you just like a pen drive. You can go for a portable drive from Western Digital or Seagate, both are equally good.I have been using Western Digital portable hard disk for the past 2 years and it hasn't given me problems till date.Have a good day!!
