"The hurrier I go, the behinder I get."

Hello friends. I first read that quote on plaque hanging on someone's kitchen wall, and I have found it to be true. When I am in a hurry and try to rush at anything, instead of getting things done faster or arriving at a place on time, it seems I make a million mistakes and drop things and such and end up getting more behind than if I had not hurried. Do you find this to be true in your own life? Or are you the kind who can hurry and actually get things done more quickly? Do you have some examples to share? Thank you. Karen

Hi Karen, Yes, yes yes, this is so true and so frustrating! It happens to me every morning when I am madly competing with the clock (I have one in every room LOL) and just succeeding in nick of time! I do the silliest mistakes, I forget the most important things (like switching off the gas oven), things keep falling from my hands and adds to the mess…you wont believe I even rush to the bathroom without the towel only to come back again for it…its hilarious I’m sure if I watch it in leisure but at that moment, I feel the I don’t even have the time to breathe LOL But yes, I am a bit impetuous by nature and I cant really do anything slowly…even if I have time on hand, I just cant do it at a gentler pace…once the work is done, I’m relieved but before that I just have to rush. OMG…the worst was when I rushed out leaving the door keys behind and had to wait on the road for two hrs before a very angry and glaring hubby came from his office to rescue me

Hello Sudipta. Ack! I just hated all the days I used to have to compete with the clock lol, but when my kids were young and still home, it seemed yes, that every morning was hectic in the rush to beat the clock. Like you said, when we hurry, we tend to make silly mistakes that actually slow us down! I understand about feeling driven NOT to do anything slowly. It seems as we get older, though, it happens by way of nature and acquired wisdom that we learn to take our time with things :) Thank you for responding. Karen

"More haste: less speed" is an old proverb with much truth. I find this happens more with me on short, quick, simple little tasks which I try to do in a hurry. I drop things, fumble, make mistakes or do something silly - just plain make a mess. I am used to working to deadlines, so as a general rule I pace myself well. Sometimes, when time seems to speed up and it is later than I thought, and I have to get ready to go out and running late, I'll get a wriggle on and end up being early. Contrarily, if I find I have oodles of time to get ready, I take my time and end up on the verge of running late. We're a weird mob!

"They're a weird mob" is the name of a book, later made into a movie, about Aussies, so Aussies tend to refer to ourselves as "a weird mob". (The book was good, but the movie not so good)

Hi Cloudwatcher. I have not heard that proverb until now :) LOL, yes, when I wait until the last minute, which is sometimes the case even when allowing extra time, I do okay. But on lesser tasks, if I try to hurry through just to get them out of the way, I spill things, drop things, all of that lol. And hence, they take mucher longer than necessary. I agree...we are a "weird mob!" Karen

I wonder why so often, books to tend to be better than the resultant movie? Perhaps it's because the book holds more and richer detail that will not fit into the alloted time slots for movies. :)

I find that to be so true! I realised at some point that there is a time for everything and no matter how much you hurry you are not going to get it done any quicker because if the time is not right, something will crop up to delay you. I think I realised this best a few years ago when driving. Whenever I was going somewhere and would go fast, overtaking too much sometimes as well, it would always happen that later on in the journey there was some hold-up or other. A level-crossing closed or a queue due to road works or whatever meaning that there was a long wait which just made me lose all the time that I had gained by going quicker. Even in the kitchen. I now go at a much steadier pace and things are done better, more thoroughly and with no stressed up feeling at then end.

I used to have to take a certain route where there was always the barriers down at a level crossing for twenty minutes when I would be passing. I either left earlier to cross before the barriers went down but that meant I got to work too soon so I put some knitting in the car and used to do it everyday while waiting. It made the time go so much quicker too

Hi Diana. LOL, it makes sense the way you put it. It seems we hurry only toward a delay! That's when things can become frustrating, and it seems very common in traffic matters. Rush hour traffic, pokey folk in front of us, or traffic jams. Hm, no wonder road rage has also become so common. I now keep a magazine or puzzle book in the car to prevent that lol. I also go at a more steady pace these days, and sure enough, things do get done even without the frantic hurry up mode. Karen

Hi Yugasini. I tend to rush, too, and when I do, I make mistakes, and then that holds me up, which was what I did not want. I am teaching myself that if I go a bit slower, I make fewer mistakes and get done with work more quickly! I love how that works. Karen

Before I was a mother, I was quite efficient at being able to get things done in a hurry. Then, I had children. Now, whenever I am in a hurry it seems as if I can't get things done in a time efficient manner at all. Where it used to take me just twenty minutes to get out of the door on a given day, it now takes me more than an hour to get ready and get out the door. And, when I am running behind, it is inevitable that the kids won't cooperate on getting ready for whatever it is that we have to do.

i think sometimes the hurrier you go, the faster you get things done. ofcourse the hurrier means doing things quickly in your plan, not just hurry without plan. for example, i am a faster girl, usually i do things quickly and it is easy to make mistakes.so i will make plans for the week before it comes. i will write down what i am going to do on this day, then i can do it quickly and correctly!

Behinder is not a accepted word in the dictionary though it is part of the urban dictionary which means "giving something from behind". Not the same meaning as we intended to say. The quote can be said as "The faster I go, the slower I get". Now to the discussion, I like to do things fast. I plan well so that I can do things fast by spending less time. But, your quote goes well with one example in my life. Every sunday, I go to church. Even if I wake up at 7 or 7:30 or 8 and do things, my family will be ready only at 9. So no point in waking up early.

Yes, Nishdan, the word behinder, while not in the dictionary, was on the plaque. Your version is, of course, the grammatically correct one. :) LOL, good point. Often, however organized one is, another person or a whole family may create a hold up. Thank you, Karen

Hi Karen I find that to the one time I was late getting the Children to School years ago the more I rushed the more I got stressed and they would probably be later then what they would have been had I stayed calm and not stressed out lol There have been a few other Incidents to so now I try not to rush lol

Hello Gabs. I think you've said the important thing. When we rush we get stressed and the stress slows us down since it makes us goof up! Like you, I've discovered that if I stay calm, I can speed it up a bit without rushing and making mistakes. Thank you. Karen

Hi Cher. Isn't it odd, but true? LOL. And I do the same with typing...I go so fast I make a lot of errors, where if I slow down a bit, far less. Thank you for your response and your example. Karen

Hey PeacefulWmn! I am always doing things way to fast! And as you said, it does cause accidents plenty of the time! I am always dropping things and sometimes falling or banging into things, but it still doesn't stop me and I never learn to slow down! I have always been like that! And my Mother, who is going to be 80 is the same way! We are just naturally hyper and just are always in a hurry to get things done! I don't know why we are like that! And then there are times that I will just sit around and not do anything at all! I go from one extreme to another!

Hello Opal. Aww, I had the same trouble for a long time! I just couldn't seem to slow down, but these days, with age and such, I do tend to pace myself more often. And when I forget, sure enough, I bungle up something lol. Thank you for sharing that. karen

If you take the time to get your day organized you will not feel so rushed, just remember to always remain flexible, if you don't for sure something will come along a throw off you schedule.

Good advice, Pat. I agree that a few extra minutes of planning the day at its start can save us a lot of time and additional steps in the long run. Thank you for the advice :) Karen

The saying "haste makes waste" was born for a reason! It just amazes me to see people racing toward a red light. They have to cut in front of you so they can be the first to have to wait.

Ack, Canellita! Perfect example. I cannot count how many times someone has zoomed around me at top speed only to turn in at their destination a mile or less down the road. Ugh. And yes, the same holds true with red lights and those who try to "beat" them. Thank you. Karen

Hi Shibham. A very good quote you have given us, and also very true! Here, the story is the same, but between a tortoise and a hare (rabbit.) LOL, I also have hung on to some of my "behinder" habits, but with time, pacing myself has gotten easier. Thank you for contributing. Karen

Perfectly true. Sometimes we are too in a hurry to achieve and get things but in the end we fail, because we forget to look back and consider basic steps first. Slow but firm steps are better than urgent but not perfect.

Hi Denver, and welcome to MyLot :) Ah, so very true. Some fore-planning, and as you said, looking at basic steps would help a great deal in our attempts to achieve any goal, finish a task, or make an appointment on time without making mistakes due to hurry. Thank you for sharing that wisdom, and enjoy MyLot. Karen

Hi Karen! I think that it is also said that “making hurry is the job of a devil’. It is very true that if you make too much hurry in executing a task, you may end up as the last one. Too much hurry could be counter-productive and could result in some kind of loss to us. Though the life is very busy and time is at premium, yet we should take our own time to accomplish certain tasks, lest we land into some kind of trouble. I take my own time to complete my tasks and do not unnecessarily accelerate my speed. My better half is faster than me in accomplishing tasks and she expects the same from me………lol! She also tend to commit mistakes, when speeding up. Have a great day! Deepak

Hi Deepak. "Making hurry is the job of the devil." That is a good saying, and true. When we hurry, we invite mistakes and the anger or frustration that can come with them. I'm glad you're one to take your time with what needs to be done. I have learned to do that more often, and I make fewer mistakes when I do, which actually accomplish more than when I try to hurry through something. :) Karen

I think that's normal. When we rush, our brain is more focused on achieving something thus our ability to coordinate our actions (like eye and hand coordination) tend to not coordinate well. Which is why, in most cases, most especially in emergencies, people who panic are less likely to survive.

Hi Laydee. You put that so well, and it does make perfect sense. A great explanation for why the "hurrier we go, the behinder we get." I've heard that, too, that one should never panic in an emergency when survival is at risk. Thank you so much. Karen

Hello my friend PeacefulWmn9 Ji, In fact practice is neededtoexecute such hurries. Our brain, mind and limbs must co-ordinate to performby heart and soul. I remember, my hubby will come after duty and just tell meto get ready as we have to go to movie, we have only 30 mts of time, we have made many SOP's fpr many occasions and we just follow. Afterall he wants to make use of his service carer experiences even now. If one makes plan earlier, one will never skip many and make less mistakes.Hereminds me of very old movie entitled "OPERATION PETTICOT" (1954-55). He has a slogan, "THEMORE WE SWEAT IN PEACE, THE LESS WE BLEED IN WAR" Wishing you a very happy Chrismas and New Year-2010. May God bless You and have a great time.

Hi Karen, in Greece everyone is too laid back to hurry and I've definitely adopted that style. I can't think when I do unless it is rushing to get somewhere in the car and on those days I need to hurry I get slowed down by something stuck in front which reminds me to set off earlier next time. If I need to hurry in the kitchen I've got multi tasking in there down to a fine art.

Hi Thea. We in the US could definitely take adopt the more laid-back lifestyle of you and the people of Greece! Here, it's always rush rush for almost everything. Thank goodness, as I have gotten older, I've learned how to pace myself. When I don't, when I hurry, it really does slow me down rather than getting me ahead of the game. Karen
