Hi Friends, Here I have come with a sensible topic. Why students are working part time? I am a engineering college lecturer, I know all of my students.. most of my students are working part time.. One day, I asked some bunch of students (those who are working as a part time), why you are all working as a part time? rather you can sit and study for your feature? They said that, they cannot ask money from their parents for their books, notes, and some necessary expenses, as their parents are very poor to give support for their university fees. I was too much worried, and ask them to reduce their work, and promised them "I will give you notebooks, and lecturer notes for your reference, pen, pencils" upto my capability... A month later, I saw one of my student went inside a Bar, where people use to drink alcohol... after seeing him, I cannot resist myself and followed him escaping from his eyes... There, I could clearly see him, drinking and enjoying with another set of friends... The very next day, I called him separately and asked about yesterday's incident... But, he didn't give me a proper reply... I could not move further, as he doesn't want to give a reply to me.. What do you think friends, should these kind of students should go for part time work?

hi,friend, working as part time employee is not wrong, but how usefully utilizing that money is important...as you said, there are few students who habituated to bad habits and they are ruining their own career...life..and in future, there is a chance to necome as anti social eliments. Have a nice time.

College should be considered a full time job, but there may be financial problems. Students sometimes have to work, and a job combined with studying (especially when finals are approaching) can be very stressful. Forbidding them from working would be wrong though unless the college is able to provide full financial support. One night of drinking should be fine as long as he didn't go overboard. If it's a drinking problem, he really should get help.

hi arunmails yes I think they should work part time but not use that money for bar hopping, relax at home with friends but study, study, study. I can see your point about the bar,but working part time is the only way some of your students can make it into college. I would make it clear that if they are working part time they should make sure that they have left themselves enough time to study too.Working part time could give them valuable experience in the job market too. good luck.

i think that is good, also beacause students don't have a real work so they can't earn a lot of money , so every kind of work is welcome. I'm a student and i searched for a part time work several time but i've never found one for me, beacause here there are not so much work opportunity. Maybe i can find a work near my university but it's difficult too.

I know of many here in our country who finished their college by being working students. Since their parents could not afford to support their studies, they work during the day and study at night. I think, they have reached a level of being more responsible than students who focus on their studies alone. They are able to explore their potentials more. I myself have a son who saw himself through college by means of driving a sidecar (a bicycle with a seat for two passengers attached to the bike) which is rampant in our community. He had to weather the sun and the rains just so he could finish his college course because I lost my job when he was in his second year. Many people, young and old, in our place admired him because the other boys his age did not want to do that job, and they preferred an easy life going out with friends, not serious about finishing their studies. Right now, my son has a good regular job because he finished his college. His colleagues can only land contractual jobs that last for only five months, after which they need to look for another job that will last for another five months. My own mother was a working student, too and she became the breadwinner in the family. I think the working students have a good sense of being very responsible. With regard to the student that you saw, maybe he was just trying to relax that time but he knows his limitations and will still pursue to finish his course. I think he would not want his efforts in supporting himself to college to be wasted.

Hello arunmails! I have been teaching for twelve years now. And, just like you, I teach in the tertiary level. I have encountered many students who are working part-time. They need to do so. What they earn somehow helps in paying for their tuition fees as well as for their personal expenses. Most of them are responsible students and I am happy about that. I don't think I would like seeing them spending their money on useless things.

My brother in law put himself through University by working and studying because his family could not afford his education and these days he is an engineer and feels very proud of what he has accomplished by himself. I can appreciate your concern after seeing a student in a bar and it would be a shame if that is how he spent all his money but it may not be something he does all the time and I guess students need to relax and get out with their friends for that is part of being young. It boils down to balance between work, study and play, I think.

Working part time can have its good and its bad side.Working will help to supplement their spending money and believe me when on campus you need a lot of spending money .Also working helps student get an introduuction into the discipline required for working and other intricacies of the work world. Also many good links are formed which many be useful to help you get a job because many of the persons you work with part time may be able to recoomend you to other firms. When you have worked it looks really nice on your resume because it shows taht you have experience. Finally working and getting money should help you with discipline that may be usefull when you start working. One of teh disadvantage is that it takes away from the sudy time .

It is always better for students to concentrate on their studies full time, but some students do not have the luxury of not having to work. The student you describe lacks discipline and will likely not be very sucessful in his studies or in his work life once his studies are completed. Either way, he is not your responsibility. Anyone old enough to drink in a bar is an adult and should act accordingly.

When I was in college, I did work part time for the university that I attended. This gave me the ability to have spending money that I would not have had otherwise, and it also made me appreciate my college experience a lot more than I would have otherwise. I worked in alumni donations where four days a week I would spend three hours calling alumni asking for donations to the college. Then, I made a couple hundred dollars per month that I was able to use for eating out, going shopping, and yes, also having some drinks when we went out as well. I don't think that there is anything wrong for a student to work while they are in school. Actually, I rather think it is a good thing and that most students should work a part time job while they are in school if they are able to.

Actually i think that if a college or university student has a choice, they should not work whiles they're in school. It is hectic and tiring and could affect your grades. But the truth is sometimes students really need the money they get from their part time jobs for their upkeep.

I really don't know. But for other students, they might have situation. They want to fully focus on their academic achievement as I believe, but they have financial situation to watch after. Education isn't that easy to go through, as I had experience with it. I would work part - time during college too.

There are students who are just being real in life. They don't want to stop their education and they have no choice since their parents can't provide for them they will help themselves. I was a part time student when I was in college. The only formula for it is you have to want what you do, you have to like it in order to love it and things will flow in the right place. There is a problems always but you always have a solution to it because that is what you want, that is what you planned. However, there are some like your student who work partime just to get what they want, like going to a bar or going to place, buying things that are unnecessary most of them are material things. just let them be like that. For sure in time they will learn something from it once a problem occur. Working and studying are not easy, so I admired those part time working students out there. Hope they all graduate.

I appreciate that teachers and professors go the extra mile for their students, however, I believe if a student is serious about getting through school, working is good for him/her. Anything I worked for during my life meant so much more than anything given or made easy. I appreciated the effort it took and held it more dear, including education. My son worked while going to college. The first semester, we paid his way. He came out with C's and D's in grades. We told him until he could prove he would study, he got to pay. The next semester, while paying his own way, he had A's and B's. The third semester we again paid and his grades dropped. From that time on, he paid his own way and became an honors student. He seemed to only get serious when the money came out of his own pocket.

I think that rare with your student doing some happiness. But if that is always I think he really need to have a part time jobs to have some. Have a part time while studying is really good because that is also boost their capability to have experience...This is also a little help for them to earn some cash for schooling...

A student who workds parttime will have extra money. It can help pay for some of there school expenses but that does not mean they can not go out and enjoy themself with some of the money they have earn.

maybe there are few students working part time only for enjoying life or sth others like him u described. but i do believe most of them working part time for supporting their college fees, such as the notes, tuition fees, perdiem, etc, because of poor family. as once i was among them. but just dont spend too much time on it, otherwise, it'll influence the study.

This is up to the student working or not working, and their oppinion of it.
