The best thing to do is just to keep practicing. I know a lot of Hispanic people who won't hardly speak English, because they are embarrassed. There is no reason to be embarrassed, if anything the American people will be impressed with your effort. Perhaps you can get a friend who will help and practice with you, that wants to learn to speak English as well. Good luck to you!

I heard in the news that Chinese improved their English and they going to beat the Filipinos in the future. If thats happens it is hard for the Filipinos to compete with Chinese in employment because right now English speaking Filipinos is in demand in local employment and abroad. Practice makes perfect, always watch English movies or soap operas and read a lot. Like you I'm also struggling to perfect my English and as of now I'm not confident to speak English.

Buy english books, me what i do is to read Archie's comics. There are many conversational english there because it is a comics. I do watch american films and programs and I repeat what they are saying. I listen to their intunation repeat it and adapt it. And I also do blogging I do write what I learned from Mylot. I read the discussion of pure american here and take note of the new words they used, I used it to my blogs. I try also to speak with my friends through english. We sometimes trip with ourselves and talk in english only. Little by little I practice english.

Here in our country, we don't mind if we look like a fool if we talk in English. We just want too and there are many call center here, we do practice speaking American intunation. Buy Archie comics and read it loud. If you want go to safe place or quiet place, be sure you are alone so that you will not look weird. Practice there.

Some of my colleagues started by reading books out loud, so your tongue would get used to pronouncing English words. Always keep a Chinese-English dictionary handy. Encourage friends to speak English with you, no matter how silly you feel. Never ever be embarrassed if you committed a mistake. I believe no one's English is ever perfect, one is bound to commit an error once in a while. Just practice often, Chen Yun. You will soon find yourself able to express yourself in English. Never mind people if they tell you that your Chinese accent is so heavy. No worries! =)I am trying to improve my Mandarin and Fookien, too. I try to practice with my Parents whenever I have the time. Good luck to the both of us, LOL.

My Mandarin name is Mei An. I was born here in the Philippines. However, my Chinese accent is still apparent when I speak English even Tagalog, which is the local language here. It really does take some practice. I even worked at a call center just to improve my Skill. I used to have a hard time practicing too because my friends feel silly communicating in a language they aren't used to. It's not just in China but also here in here in Philippines that people can be judgmental when they hear you speak English. They'd laugh at you for making a mistake, for mispronouncing a word, for every little error. Just don't mind them. Let me share you a story that might inspire you, when I was working at a call center here, I worked for a major Telecommunications company in USA, I really didn't expect to be hired because I was insecure of my skill in Oral English. When I got the job, I practised hard and even during the training period, I was always getting commendations from both my colleagues and clients. What I am trying to point is that you just have to say whatever you want to say, talk whenever you want to talk. Never let people discourage you.

You can read books in order to understand the usage of words and grammar. I suggest reading story books, novels, journals, blogs etc. Another fun way of learning English is to watch english movies, soaps, etc preferably with subtitles. That will help improve your conversational English. And yes, practice is the key. Don't worry about getting embarrassed, frame the sentence in your mind and just say it wherever and whenever you can. And you can talk to the mirror or your hand when you have some privacy too lol.

practice practice practice, the more english you can surround yourself with the more you will pick up, although its not just english it also the local slang that you need to get used to. I think english is possibly one of the hardest languages to learn because there are so many variations, take where I come from we call a child a bhairn even some people in england haven't a clue what a bhairn is. Just surround yourself with as much english as you can and you will eventually pick bits up. Good luck,

Dear benny128.Thanx for your advices.. :) You are right.Every language study need practice.I need practice really..But, in my university,China university of Petroleum, most of the foreign students are from Middle East,Russia or Africa, you know. So,I don't have so many chance to practice my oral English..The only chance is in myLot here and some scientific documents. I have gotten the interview chance of Schlumberger, but because my oral English is not very well,I was refused..T_T..I determined to study my English well.LOL

Dumb English is very popular here and I agree that the more English we practise, the more we can pick up. But I think the communication is not related to the language itself only, but the culture background difference plays a very critical part in it. As Benny said, seldom people will know about bhairn even some people in England as well. If foreigner who would like to learn Chinese is the same, it took quite a long time to learn Chinese for its different tone. And I regconized that a lot of people can speak beautiful English with the local accent, saying Australia, England or USA, but seldom foreigner can immitate with the Chinese accent as the local.

for you to improved your oral english you need to have at least a bank of english vocabulary. by having a bank of vocabulary then you can start practicing it here in mylot, by participating discussions. then if you already have bank of vocabulary next thing is to watch a pure english movie at home dont switch your channel to any unless its also english. you will then know the correct pronunciation of those vocabulary you have, copy what they say by also saying the words. if you encounter strange words then bring dictionary with you and check what it means and try to use the words often so you can remember them easily. read english books nor novels and have your dictionary with you. i used to do that when i was a child. my brother gave me a book and a dictionary and i listed some words that i normally hear from movies and check its meaning and i also applied it by talking. Then i also watched english movie, at first i didnt understand what their saying but i always ask my brother what it means and its not easy as they will get irritated explaining so i just write down words i didnt know and check dictionary later about what it means and i keep on using the words everyday till i gather a lot of vocabulary and was able to construct sentences. If you have friends then try to encourage them to speak english too. You can't learn the whole concept of english usage in just a year of studying, it takes years and in school they will only guide you and give you the basic, they will not goin gto gie you everything words by words. your still the one who will widen it. try to pick or write down 5 english words you heard from other people everyday and if you dont know its meaning then check dictionary then next time use the words over and over again. the next day try to pick up another 5 words and do the same the next day till you are confident enough to speak english.

Knowing a language is an art/ For knowing english you have to study the grammer first and to the pronosation of the words correctly. Next thing is to talk with your friends in english often. At first you will strugle, then afterwards you will find it easier to talk frequently This is the way of learning English.

practice, listen and talk with someone who can speak better than you... don't be afraid or ashame to try speakng with them since by doing this you can practice speaking better than just by being silent. fear of doing something cannot help us overcome the things that we need to succeed.

As most people say, Practice makes Perfect! I'm pretty sure that you are very good at Chinese, why? how? The same methos applies to the way you can earn english. Verbal communication is very important, so if you have english-speaking friends, try communicate with them and ask questions if you don't know a word. Another good method, is to expand your vocabulary by looking up in the dictionary, reading books or watching english TV programs. But the most important, make sure to try and do english language excercises because as boring and useless as they might seem, they contribute a lot in your learning.

It seems to me that the best way to learn a language would be to try to think in it. You do need to practice speaking English, but you already know that. When you do not have an English speaking companion with whom to speak, try reading something aloud in English. I think that a work of fiction where there is conversation going on would be best. This will not only build your vocabulary, but it will help you to understand how the words are used.

Hi ChenYun! And Wecome to Mylot! The very best way that you can learn Engish is just by participting in the discussions here! Most of the mylotters that are here are aware that there are plenty of people who come here from all over the globe and are quite patient with them! And I am certainly one of them! So don't be afraid to respond to a discussion even if you don't think that you will be understood! The more you respond, the more English you will learn! And don't worry if you make mistakes because we will all help you along!

Well your english isnt that bad at all. You can improve your english yourself by talking in the mirror of the conversations you might have, reading newspapers in english, small articles or even story books. I hope you agree with me, that childhood is when we learn best because that's when learning is the easiest and the best. So search for english story books and fables. Other way is to join any english speaking tution classes where they'll not only teach you how to talk in english but also write and grammar basics.

My suggestion is that always talk to English people and or have always a conversation using the English language. Watch English movies, news, and other relevant topics to boost your skills. But the best is to regularly talk to English man or talk using English in your family...Experience is the best teacher, my friend

Hi ChenYun1985! What you need is someone whom you can converse English with in that way you can improve your speaking and listening skills as well as building up your vocabulary. You can find english-speaking people at www.italki.com and most of them could teach you English and in the same way you can teach them Chinese. Exchanging languages is a fun way of learning. Another way is to self study. Good luck and have fun!

I think many people nailed all the points in learning English. In sum, it is important to study correct sentences and then practice what you studied. Many students only study and do not practice. That means they can pass exams, but have a hard time speaking to an English speaker. If you can find someone to speak with regularly, that is the best. If not, then you'll have to find classes or tutors. If you can't afford that or are limited by time, then you'll have to find online resources with audio files. There are several I can recommend. Several of my students mentioned www.talkenglish.com is excellent for speaking as they focus solely on speaking English skills. I took a look and it was good for students who do not have access to English speaking people. Besides the practicing part, I think willing to make mistakes and not being afraid of speaking will hlpe your speed of learning as it will make you speak more often and practice in all different situations. Good luck!
