California To Legalize Cannabis, What Do You Think?

United States

I recently read an article online which stated that California has two initiatives on the ballot that would legalize cannabis for recreational use. This came into play when Californias economy went horrible and people started looking into ways of getting more tax money into the state. Aside from bringing in revenue for the state, most people in California believe cannabis is far less dangerous/addicting than alchohol and tobacco. What do you think about this issue and how does the law in your part of the world deal with cannabis use? Do you think it is something very dangerous, or do you see it as natural and not harmful?

Anything in moderation is o.k. The problem with cannabis is that people usually tend to smoke too much and get lazy. Lazy people are not good for California's economy. As long as people don't overdo it, I see no problem in it. A joint a day may even be good for people's behavior. What I mean is they will be more relaxed, calm, and at ease. This may even bring crime rate down in California. Maybe I'm just being overly optimistic, but one never knows.

Well it seem to be more and more common around to use Canabis for recreational purposes or medical purposes and afterall it is allready legal in the Netherlands. What happens when you create a ban is people are more interested in trying it out, so it could be likely that less people would use it if it becomes legalized, just because the dutchmen have free canabis doesnt mean they are all addicted.

Yes, both Amsterdam and Portugal legalized it and found their crime rates plummeted drastically.

It alters the way you see things... I turns them into a different perspective, you loose sense of size of things. I donĀ“t think it should be legal at all.

Yhis can set up all sorts of new legal questions. Do you limit sales to California residents? Will out of staters get fake ID's to be able to buy it? Will the neighboring states start searching suspect cars going across the state line? If private growers kept going, they might get nailed for failing to pay taxes which then might mean fines instead of prison time (which could be a good thing). If a large company got in the business, would there be a backlash for people who disapprove, like right wingers. Regarding the use, I knew a girl who smoked just about every day and she had a tendency toward paranoia. Making it legal though would screw the Mexican smuggling cartels.

Precisely! Making it legal would take the power and control (read: $$$$$$) out of the hands of Organized Crime. In my opinion that is a very desireable result.

I think it is safe as long as it is for a good reason, like someone with an illness that really needs it.It is not legal here in my state I don't think so but if a person has gluacoma yep don't know how to spell that word.OOPS!I think it is supposed to help them and I don't see any reason for it to be harmful to those in need.

It is natural and should be legal especially for terminal illness. I would want it if I was in pain and needed it. It helps and doctors say so legalize it and be done with it after all look at all these people out there who are dying from very painful illness such as cancers and there is no help for them except things like this. Legal or not if it helps great. The government do not want to make it legal for many will be wanting it even more. I would use it if I had a need for it.

Cannabis should be legal. It was made illegal based on lies. FACTS: - you cannot die of an overdose - it is not addictive - it's effects wear off in a few hours - it has many health benefits - there is no hangover - it is a fast growing, cheap, annually renewable source of top quality paper, fuel & fabric - it has been used for centuries by many cultures and will continue to do so regardless of it's illegal status - it does not cause violence, in fact the opposite, peace and harmony - main side effect ...the giggles.....
