Do you ever think like a criminal?

When you are in stores, or in new houses, do you immediately spot the loopholes or "opportunities" that make a place vulnerable to crime? For me, when I am in somebody's house, I often notice the unlocked doors, the tree near the window, the obvious key under the rug - things that can put some bad person to an advantage over you. When I'm in shops, I notice the clothes near the door, the inattentive saleslady etc. But I know that it's bad to take advantage of my knowledge of these things, that's why I tell my friends, for example, to put some locks or grills on their windows to keep criminals from climbing in. How about you?

Hi Imcueva, I do understand what you are talking about. I read a lot of "crime novels" and watch a lot of TV and whenever I am out, I think about the same things, about the door, windows, the height of the tree leading to the second level, etc. I also have worked in retail as an assistant manager and had to watch for shoplifters and try to be aware of clothes that would be easy to steal, etc. I would like to think that I'm "street smart" but I sometimes realize how inattentive I am when I am walking in the city or travelling by myself. We always think we're safe when we should be more aware of our surroundings. I do make sure all doors, sliding doors, garage doors, windows are locked even when I am home though.

Hi lina machina: You are actually right. I wouldn't be a good criminal either. Lol XD I think that those action movies and everything on tv makes us thing about this situation more often that we should do this. At least i think that most of the people don't think about this seriously. Don't they? Lol. XD. Thanks for your answer. Have a nice day.

Now that you mentioned it, I think it is because of the number of Crime/Fiction books I've read and the CSIs I have watched on TV. It is a good thing so that we can save ourselves from unfortunate events =) Sometimes though I just get too paranoid. Oh, it's also interesting to meet you, somewhat, because I'm working/studying in the clothing/ fashion industry as well =)

Hi Imcueva, I wish you luck in the clothing/fashion/retail industry. I loved it when I was working it but it is long hours and I got out of the retail business in search of a more 9 - 5 type position. Just the other day, I watched Criminal Minds and they showed a serial killer getting into someone's house through the garage. They duplicated the garage opener sequence and most people do not lock the door that leads to the garage into the house because they already feel secure with the garage doors locked. Suffice to say, I now lock the door that leads to the garage.

I hope that I am attentive to things that may enable someone to ciminally victimize me and I have thought about situations that "would be so easy", but only in a passing thought. However, I do know someone who thinks like a criminal to an almost paranoid state when it comes to windows, doors, personal belongings and people in general. The 'criminal mind' of defense is always present and actually is an irritant sometimes.

It is, I realized. I become paranoid most times, I just have to shake myself out of near insanity. With me, I keep a mental note on those "opportunities" and tell myself to do something about it, if it were to happen to me or my place.

Safety is an absolute concern that we all must be conscious of, but when the consciousness becomes a source of fear, (paranoia)and it is projected onto others it can be a cause of tension. Trust versus mistrust. It can also cause the other to think, "just how far does the criminal mind take the thinker?" Again, trust versus mistrust. That is not to say that a game of "what if?" is a bad thing, just that the balance of "what if" and "it is" must be checked. : ) Everything in Balance

i often do look at things in a different way, such as key under the door matt, or something in stores, or people's houses. i often will point out to family or friends by telling them you should cut or trim down that tree someone can hide behind it, or so they can see the driveway. i did securty work for a few years and been trained by mps. i always look my surrounding as well, watch people and thier actions to me this good for everyone to learn mostly females

Hi Lmcueva, i admire for having an eye for all these things. i can say somehow you are paranoid but in a positive way. your friends will be so lucky for having you as a visitor. you're a smart visitor my dear. as for me, especially in malls, theater and hotels i used to check on the fire exit. but i am not so keen in checking on my friends houses and the areas for possible entry of criminals.

Hi lmcueva: actually i am not sure if this could be considered as a criminal way of thinking but i have thought the same things you are describing but i can explain this, sure. XD. Lol. I have done this but it's just as a game, i think. I have never think about making something illegal for real, it's just like, what would i do if i'd need to take something from this house...? I think your question is really funny. I love it. Have a nice day. -Alvaro.

I have never thought in that manner and your discussion is quiet interesting. Infact I am quite the opposite I check everything else but the disadvantages. It is really good to get a different perspective maybe I will also start checking out things in that manner.

I have had to (on a few occassions) think like a criminal as a store manager I have to be able to spot a criminal which means I have to be able to think how they do Just yesterday I had to get into the mind of a criminal and help the police catch a couple of people that cashed forged checks

I'm not sure that I think like a criminal, as such... Like, I don't imagine how I would infiltrate a store in order to pilfer various goods and / or services. But I get very nervous around rozzers, for some reason. It's like they make you feel guilty, just by being there!
