There are alot of people out there that i feel sorry for as they are not allowed to have too much sugary things due to their health.I did hear that you can get diabetic chocolate but i was told that sometimes this can be as bad as the normal chocolate that you can buy.I do not know too much about biscuits as i would think it is the same priciple as the chocolate.I always buy chocolate selection packs for the children as well as their friends without even thinking if they have any health issues as well as buy biscuits and chocolate for the adults.

In my opinion, biscuits are equally unhealthy. Dark chocolates is still deemed as healthy if one take in moderation. How about considering granola bars? cereals? There are healthy ones.

When my GrandMother was alive she always received boxes of chocolate candy for Christmas. She had 10 children and raised a grandson like her own and 32 grandchildren. So, it was difficult to find something to give her.

Most diabetics are allowed to have chocolate that has a high cocoa but low sugar index. I think they can have dark chocolate which has about a 70% cocoa ratio. Check with your doctor, but dark chocolate is good for you and can help reduce your arterial blood pressure.

I am hypoglycaemic, my sugar drops if I don't get enough protein or if I eat too many sweets I get really sick. If I eat something sweet, like chocolate, or decide to have a drink, I make certain I eat extra well the rest of the day. However, one of the local churches makes really great sugar free pies. I mention that because it may be something you want to think about getting. The homemade sugar free pies are divine.

You are most welcome. The best ones, as far as I'm concerned, are the apple and the peach. Now that I'm hungry, lol.

Yes you are right about chocolates but as far as the biscuits are concerned there are soem specally designed for sugar patients. When I was on a diet I used to buy bran biscuits which was low in fat and tasty too. When I start taking them with tea everyday , my other colleages also joined so you should look around for wheat biscuits and that would be better for all.

I think you are right,i just want to make sure that all of the family do not end up buying my grandad all of the same gifts as there would be nothing worse than that as then he would get bored of the same things especially if that they were all the same.

If I think more about it I usually ask the person from whom I am buying it , ask some colleagues too to get a variety of answers to see whats the best gift of that person. Take one or two rounds of the market to see whats new there to buy and being given as a gift

i actually prefer cheese myself.sometimes i'll buy people those sausage/jelly/cheese gift packages instead of chocolate..they seem to go over well. i don't think i know anybody offhand that is lactose intolerant..

I would say that anything that they claim not to have sugar but tastes sweet contains more harmful 'fake sugar'. Sometimes those things that don't have sugar have saccharine. which is a preservative. I suppose reduced sugar is good, but not the same level of sweetness without using real sugar.

Hello jugsjugs, I prefer chocolate as a gift. I think it is one of the favorite choices available. I don't really think of the health aspect whenever I buy gift until I read your discussion. I seldom choose biscuits unless I am going to give a hamper.

I just think that there are alot of people out there that have diabeties and people like myself and you do not think when we buy gifts for people as you never know if they have a problem like that.I have been given lots of ideas on here to what i can get for people with this health problem, which now makes it easier to get a gift for my grandad as well as my mother.

Hi Jugs. A little special chocolate for diabetics will not hurt them, and sugar free jello adds sweetness to cheesecakes without the sugar. Another treat is yummy fresh fruit mixed with sugar free whipped topping such as cool whip, which has no artificial sweeteners. They do have many recipes online, too, for diabetics. Karen

Oh yes, they have many :)) And they also have cookbooks full of great recipes for diabetics, so that they don't have to feel deprived of sweet treats, especially when others around them are enjoying them :)) Karen

Thank you,i had not even thought of looking on the internet for a few recipes to make for my grandad. Also my grandad will be stopping over the road at my mums for the whole of Christmas,so perhaps that idea if i look on the internet for her will also help her to make a few different dishes for him as well as we can also make things for him so that he can take them home as well.

If from the point of the gift receiver, I bet chocolate is better than biscuits. and I don't think there is any nutrient in biscuit, either.

I think i would prefer chocolate as well rather than biscuits as a gift, but i am thinking that i may not be the only family member thinking of getting that and i want him to have a variety of things so that he do not get all the same things.

My daughter's babysitter before she started school is a diabetic, so when I was giving gifts to her I was always really careful. I would give her lots of different sugar free candies when Kathryn wanted to give her candy. However, I think above the issues with diabetic adults, the problem really comes into play with children that are diabetic. One of my close friend's 10 year old son is diabetic and has been since he was five years old. It is really difficult for him in that everywhere you turn around in a child's life there is candy. I know that when it comes to Easter or Christmas where kids usually get candy his parents will buy it from him.

There are alot of children as well as adults that suffer with this health problem and the children i feel very sorry for as i know there are alot of foods as well as sweets that can cause a problem for them.My friend has a child and she is always worried when it comes to easter as all you see are the eggs in the shop as well as alot of people did not realise that her child had diabeties so they got the eggs. What she done is gave it to her child in very small amounts as that way there was not too much of a problem as well as they lasted longer.

We do sometimes buy chocolate packs and make them as gifts to a family. It is cheaper this way, than wrapping up a present for every member of the family. I think the message is that, they are still worth the thought of giving a gift, and that they don't have to worry about giving something in return because it's just a chocolate pack.
@jugsjugs (12967)

I know what you mean also you can say the gift was to say thank you or that the gift was from the children as that way it works out alot cheaper.

You would be surprized at what a diabetic can not eat. My own cousin told me she cant even have macaroni. Thats a bummer. If your concerned about what to give a person can eat sugar...just give a gift thats not eatable.

Hi there Jugs. Well i usually buy chocolate for people that i know not to be diabetics. My parents friends have a son that has diabetics and they buy for him both biscuits and chocolate, but only the diabetics sugar free kind. There are also some kind of waffles for diabetics here as well. I haven't heard him complain about diarrhea after eating the sugar free chocolate, perhaps the one we have in my country doesn't have that problem.

I don’t have any friends or family members who are diabetic so I guess I have not given this matter a great deal of thought. If I buy a small gift for a couple or a family I will generally give a nice box of fine biscuits or cupcakes unless they are both chocoholics then it’s chockies all round! Some of my chocolate loving girlfriends will receive only the best from Switzerland or Belgium! Kids are partial to chocolate Santas and the like.

It is shame that there are alot of people out there that suffer from things like diabeties as they do not get as much of a choice of the wide range of things that people like us that do not have anything like diabeties.

My grandad let my children try some of his chocolate and out of 5 children only one did not mind it where as the others said it tasted like it was out of date and that it tasted like it was mouldy.

Well my grand mama is also suffering from and you know she likes sweet a lot just to make her happy and fulfill her wish i made chocolate cake for her with sugar free tablets , it tasted same like sugar but was not sugar so if you have to gift i will suggest gift chocolate cake or something else which is cooked or baked by you but remember use sugar free tablets instead of sugar. If you can do this then it's alright else gift them dark chocolate as dark chocolate has less sugar . Thanks and bbye

Thank you for you response,my grandad is stopping down for the whole of the Christmas period,so i will make him a chocolate cake with the sugar free tablets as that seems like a good idea as that way he will be able to take it home as well and he can give some to his friends that are also diabetic.
