My old Betty Crocker Cookbook had seen better days. I have had it for about 25 years and have tried many of the recipes. The cover fell off, some pages were missing, the pages that were favorite recipes were stained and torn. Although I have many cookbooks to choose from that one was my favorite. Well this year I decided I needed a new one and purchased it when it went on sale. I love the way the new one lays flat when you have it open. There is no need to weight the pages down or prop it up so it can be read while you are viewing the recipe. To my surprise though I looked for my doughnut recipe in the new book and it wasn't there. Frantically I ran to the bookshelf in search of my old tattered book. Thankfully it was still there! I whipped up a double batch of my favorite doughnut recipe. If you'd like the recipe send me a message and I will give it to you. So, remember to check that old cookbook for your favorite recipes and copy them for safe keeping. Your next cookbook may not have the recipe you are so fond of!

I don't own any of my own cookbooks, as I still live with my mom. But luckily she said she'd be giving her cookbooks to me when I move out, because she can't bake or cook anymore, not with her health problems. So the other day I decided to go through the really old ones, salvage the recipes I wanted to try [I wrote them down on note cards, as is tradition in my family, haha] and throw the old book away. It too, had seen better days. Luckily my mom helped, and told me which ones I used to like as a kid, and which ones nobody really enjoyed. I have never made doughnuts. Though it sounds like it would be fun to try! I may go look up recipes to try for my boyfriend birthday in a couple months, as he's in LOVE with doughnuts [not more than me though, haha!] .

My mum has got all her old cookbooks from when she was young, which is fortunate because she makes wonderful flapjacks and the recipe is from way back and of course mum's flapjack is the best in the world, naturally! Sadly I do not take after my mum in that respect in that I can't cook, and won't! I have no interest in cooking or baking, so sadly the cook books will not be passed down to me or if they are they will only gather dust and as I am the only child. Maybe when I get older I will appreciate cooking more? Who knows I might have inspiration in my 40s LOL! I remember thinking it was comical seeing all the old weights measures before they changed them over! Some recipe books are handed down from one generation to the next!

I have so many old cookbokks, newer cookbooks, cut out recipes from magazines, recipes printed from the internet. They are not exactly organised. As my focus changed from very tasty meals, to budget type meals, then Asian recipes, then allergy free recipes and the latest, low fat recipes. Im fairly sure I have the old Betty Crocker cookbook. At the moment Im doing an internet search for an easy to male cheesecake recipe, as that is what I have to bring to my brothers on Christmas day.

I know that is true.....someone else that I know bought the same one and was just a bit disappointed...but I am sure they need to update it from time to time. I have many cookbooks that were my mom's that have seen better days but the recipies are so awesome......good old fashioned...tried and true recipies!

Hi, I've never come across a Betty Crocker cookbook but it sounds as though it would be the equivalent of the English Mrs Beeton. The oldest recipes which I have are in the Little House on the Prairie cook book.

I got my Betty Crocker Cookbook for a Christmas gift from my mother-in-law to be on Christmas 1970 so that makes my book 39 years old and I am still using it. My book is a spiral type and lays down flat. So as I still use many of the recipes I will probably used until it (or I )completely falls apart and of no use any more! LOL

I am not much of a cook, but had that faithful Betty Crocker Cookbook that had seen its better days. My guess would be that my mother gave it to me since I remember her once making the comment that I never learned to cook since I "always had your nose in a book"......just NOT the cookbook!! Well, I made the mistake of throwing it away BEFORE buying a new one, but didn't buy one, but know there are recipes in it that I miss and wish, still that I had today. What I have found sometimes helps me, is to go to the internet to find a recipe. Progress!! lol

I collect cookbooks. I have an old Betty Crocker book, along with my most recent gift from my best friend, a 1943 Fannie Merritt Farmer "The Boston Cooking School Cook Book". It has some recipes that the previous owner clipped and taped inside the cover. I have cook books from as far back as 1925 and 1933. It's amazing how ofter I refer to those books for information. I also have another cookbook that has old recipes in it but it is a newer publication date. It has a wonderful oatmeal cookie recipe that doesn't use flour. Also nestled (actually squeezed into)my cookbook bookcase is my Mom's cookbook with recipes that date back to 1945, which I still use today. None of the books will ever get donated or removed from the collection!!! My daughter tried to grab a couple of them and haul them away when she was here...I about strung her up when I caught her! What is the publication date of your old Betty Crocker cookbook? I have an extra one from 1983...

My grandmother had about six or seven old books with recipes written in on them. A few were printed but a lot of them were handwritten into notebooks. My sisters got the whole bunch but therein were recipes from past times that people these days would never know about. You're right ! Don't throw away old recipe books !

I still have a handwritten book of recipes that was given to me before I married. I would write down a recipe and put it under the heading - for example meat dishes or cakes. It brings back many memories of a young me. I also have a god housekeeping book that is probably from he 50's. This was given to me by a lady here in J.A. I haven't used it in ages but now feel to dig it out and look through it. I also have collected cook books over the years and would not part with them at all. They will go to the daughter. Fabulous post.

I love the way your cookbooks start to get once you've really started to use them. The little stains on your favorite recipes are my favorite things to see, because they remind me of all the yummy things that I made! I haven't thrown a cookbook out yet, and don't intend to. Throw away all of those happy memories, as well as the money I spent on it? No thank you!

I doubt I would have bought a new one. I think I would have taken the time to sit at my computer and just retype all the recipes. Then I would have printed them and put them into protective sleeves in a binder! Saved some money and it would have laid flat!
