Our kitty died

We lost a cat yesterday, not the one we have been nursing for so long, but one of the barn kittys. About three days ago we saw that he was limping but couldn't find anything to do for him, no wounds or breaks, the next day he just stayed in bed and we felt he was just recovering, the day after he died. Maybe a Llama kicked him or a deer got after him, couldn't find anything wrong, but we didn't open him up. Just guess he was injured internally. He never seemed to be in pain. Of course we are sad but life on the farm is hard and barn kitties are fed well, given shots and meds and a very warm bed, for that they keep the mice down. We just can't get to attached to them, but we do try to keep them safe and most live a good life. We'll miss him. This is a fact of country life I don't like, but do understand. I keep the house kitties as pets. No matter how long I live in the country on the farm I just can't let go when animals die.

I'm so sorry! Like you, I know that it's part of the cycle of life but it is still heartbreaking to lose an animal. At least he had a good life with people that cared about him, which is more than a lot of his kind have. He's much better off than my poor strays that I feed, cold and lonely and seeking whatever shelter they can. I'm allergic to them so I can't take them in and besides they're mostly wild strays. Take comfort in knowing that your kitty had a good life and you have a kind heart.

If we can get the strays while they are still tame enough to handle, we can get or give them a home, but we don't dare feed the wild ones, cat food outside just brings in all the other critters. We each do what we can. Thanks

Yep, the wild ones are a handful! Every winter I have to train them and the dogs help. When they start yowling on the porch where the food bowl is the dogs run out the back door and bark inside the fence. And I open the door and tell them to stop fighting! Eventually, by the end of December, they stop the bickering. By that time they know that there will always be enough food and they don't have to fight over it, just take turns or share.

I'm so sorry to here that. I love kittens, cats. Farm live can have this giving and taking. Like you said while its sad its farm life. I had a cat named simon who was not a farm cat, but a house cat. I had owned him for over 10 years and I moved. The place I moved too would not allow and I couldn't find anyone to take him. I had to give him to the shelter. I cried for days. I'm still not in a place where I can have pets. So, I'm stuck reading about pets and enjoying other friends pets until I can have one again.

I commend you for being so compassionate towards the barn cats. Most people in that situation let them run wild, procreate to the point of overpopulation and don't take care of their vet needs. I hope that you also fix most of them too that you don't have a over population problem because that is actually the biggest problem facing cats today, too many of them and not enough homes. I'm sorry that he had a short life but it sounds like in your care it was a good happy one and that is what matters most.

I'm sorry to hear about your loss. I live out in the country too and we have a lot of cats here that are outdoor cats. I've gotten quite attached to some of them. We started to have a lot of them in the neighbourhood when a former neighbour (she had a house full of cats and actually had a salon over her garage and cleaned and shampooed them)left and cats got left behind. When she divorced, her ex. put a bunch of the cats outside and left them. Now everybody in the neighbourhood has cats that look alike. A few of them reproduce every year, but there are also natural predators so some disappear. I can't bear to leave them hungry, so I treat them like outdoor pets and feed them and have named the ones that show up at my house. Every time something happens with one of them, I'm sad about the loss for days - especially my favourites - but I know if we tried to catch them and take them to the Humane Society that they'd just be put down. It's hard watching the cycle of living and dying with animals isn't it?

I am so sorry for you lose. Sadly, I too know what you are going through, and it is never easy. I went through Hell after I lost four kittens that were born in my yard.

Hard to say what happened to the kitty. Atleast it sounds like she passed peacefully. I think thats one of things I wouldn't like on a working farm is if you name them you can't sell them or eat them. Even though you raise them for sale or for food.

I really fell sad for you. You are doing great job. You are nourishing so many pets.I think you also like wild animals . But their inhabitants are decreasing day by day for deforestation. Once we will find these animals only in zoo.Could we not do anything for wildlife?

I have buried more kitties than I care to remember. Barn cats, too, have their own unique personalities, and it is always hard to lose a pet. I am glad your older kitty is doing good so far. Take care... Karen

Lazy Lolly - This cat loved sleeping and all what he did eat and sleep but very loving.
All animal lovers and I am one of them go through the trauma when their pets leave them. I have had that experience several times in my life but life has to go on.I shed tears for sometime but when the new one comes I shower all my love on that new one and things become a bit easier to face the loss. This guy that you see in the picture just left the house and never returned. He loved us and we love him but why they leave and never come back is a million dollar question.

It is always difficult to lose something you care about weather it be a loved one or an animal. I know you say you try not to get attached, but to be quite honest, it seems difficult not to get a little attached. The cat will be greatly missed even if it's not one of your pets, but rather a farm animal. Sounds to me those animals are well-taken care of. I'm sorry to hear abot your loss, but at least the animal is in a better place.

One of the feral kittens - when he/she was much younger
I'm sorry to hear about your barn kitty. That's why I'm of 2 minds of letting the feral kittens go to a barn. They would be good mousers I'm sure, but I might be worrying about them all the time - after all, I have had these guys around the house now for 6 months and watched them grow up.

Oh, I'm so sorry to hear this, Pat! I think it's especially hard because animals can't really tell us how they are feeling or what really hurts. It makes me feel helpless to try to help them and when they die, it's so sad..... So sorry....
