I am asking everyone on Mylot to share with me what they know and or have experienced with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. I know that it is very common at this time because of the wars that are going on. What amazes me is that I have been diagnosed with this twice in the last year and it is hard to believe that my illness is even to someone who has been to war. I know that there are different levels of it, but the thought of it is very sobering for me.

I know this is a very old topic. but I've just seen it. I have it too. and a lot of people don't understand it at all. they seem to think that normal people living normal lives can't possibly have an illness that they associate with "heroes" and not normal people. I was first told that I have this by my husbands CPN. when she observed me completely breaking down when she was talking about his admission to hospital for Schizophrenia. the thing is, I react the same if I have to talk about what it was like for me at school. so I've been living with it for more than half my life now. what she explained it to me as was that long term memories aren't stored in the long term memory part of your brain. the distressing memories stay in short term memory, where the feelings are still very real. so when you touch on the memory you still feel exactly as you did at the time. it's sad that people seem to think that normal people, who aren't heroes, can still suffer from this, and it makes life very hard.
