How often do you update your resume? Why?

A friend mentioned that he is planning to update his resume and start looking for better opportunities. It reminded me of my own resume which I have not updated for the past two or three years. Since I have no other schedule for the day except for myLotting, I also updated mine. I'm not really sure why because I don't have any intention of looking for a new job. How about you, how often do you update your resumes? Do you keep it updated for any significant updates on your education or work background? Or do you wait for a need - say job application or accreditation requirements - before updating? In my case, I just update my resume every two or three years because I have not been actively looking for a new job for the past seven years. I know of some friends and colleagues who keep their resumes updated at all times - even with or without current needs for it.

In the UK we call it the Curriculum Vitae (CV) but I know what you mean. Yes, I update mine whenever I have new information to add or I think of a way to improve it.

Oh yeah, I've heard my other colleagues call the resume that way. Here in our country, we popularly call it the resume or bio-data. Like you, I'll make it a habit to regularly update my resume so as not to forget any important details.

I've never heard the term bio-data before, that sounds strange to me.

It's a term commonly used here in the Philippines. If literally translated, bio-data means life-data. It's actually a simple form of CV or resume. It just presents a chronological list of life information of job applicant.

You should update your resume' as soon as there are changes that occur within the course of your employment, like you got promoted for a job, or attended seminars or trainings. Your resume has to fit the job that you are applying for. You are making a big mistake if you don't update a resume.

Yes, you're right. I realized that this morning. It was easy to remember the promotions and corresponding responsibilities. But it was difficult to remember the seminars and trainings I have previously attended.

i update my resume everytime there is a new important factor to go on it, for instance before i graduated high school i had a resume and as soon as i grduated i put that on my resume because it is an important factor. so....... in the way of saying it simple, put it on the resume as soon as possible to make sure it is in your mind fresh and if you think it factors on you finding a job.

Hi JohnBailey. You are right. It's still best to update our resume on a timely basis. This is to avoid forgetting important facts or information that should be properly included in our resume.

To be frank, I do it rarely. I find it a very boring job to keep updating your resume when you hardly have anything top update into it. Moreover, most of the times you would be working ina project which are for long durations like a year or 10-12 months. SO you would hardly have anything to update in your resume. I updated my resume after a year when I got to work in a new projecta nd that too after 3 months of experience in that project. I only update my resume when it is required for me to add new skills into it and when i would be applying somewhere else for a job. That is one of the reasons perhaps why I have updated my resume now and have started applying to other companies.

Haha, I'd like to agree with you in saying that updating a resume is one of the most boring tasks. Updating our resume is very important but there's really no hard and fast rule as to the frequency of doing it. For as long as you could remember the important details of your work, trainings and educational updates/changes, you could always do the updating at a much later date.

Hi. We have the same reason for not updating our resumes timely. I was so busy with my previous work that I rarely had extra time to update my resume regularly.

I think the last time I had updated my resume was 7 years ago. I haven't see my file for that long now. I have tons of new experience to be included in it. Maybe I had to update it before the year ends.

Hi Fulltank. You have exceeded my record of not seeing and updating my resume for three years. Updating your resume before the end of the year is a good idea. You will be prepared for whatever opportunities the year 2010 could bring into your life.

I updated my resume as soon i have some major changes in my career or in my educational qualifications because for every major change in your career makes a difference in your experience point of view and educational qualification adds a extra plus point in your educational qualification point of view. I hope you got my point.

Hi. I agree with your point about timely updating our resumes for any career and educational changes. I should do that also. I tend to procrastinate updating my resume at a later date.

Your friend is smart ,back when I was actively searching for a job ,I would updated my resume every month and send out resumes every week. These day after so many rejections and settling into my current post about three years ago ,I havent updated my resume since then.I am going to do as your friend says though because there may be even better opportunities out there

Hi. If you believe that there are better opportunities other than your current work, I suggest that you really have to start updating your resume and send out copies to your prospect companies. You should never give up despite the number of rejections. A famous quote says that you have to "keep on trying until you succeed." With the right mental attitude and determination, you will always find better opportunities. However, job hunting should not affect the quality of your current work.

I update my resume about two or more years a time. In a word, I only update my resume when I need to apply for a new job. Or I would rather lay it down.

Hi. I also have the same practice. I always procrastinate because I think that I don't really need an updated resume yet. But it was hard to remember the trainings and seminars. I ended up requesting for the list of trainings and purposes from my previous company. And it will take time for them to provide me with the list.

I have to admit, I have no plans of changing or editing my resume up until somebody reminds me or if I just feel like it just has to change. So far I do not feel like editing it since it still is okay compared to other resumes I have seen with other people who are applying. For me, I really think it is not needed to be updated ever so often.

Hi. You're right. There's no need to update or revise our resume unless there are significant changes to effect. Like you, I also don't normally edit the format of my resumes unless of course I've seen other colleagues using the same format as mine. It happened several times before. Some of my colleagues followed similar format without my permission and I had no choice but to revise the format.

I think you update your resume when you are convinced that you are not satisfied with your job and have decided to look for a new one.As simple as that. There is simply no point keeping updating the resume when you are not even thinking of moving on.It will only kill your time. However, care should be taken while updating resume that your existing boss is not sniffing around!!..:)

Hi. You are right...beware of existing bosses who might be looking over your shoulder while you are updating your resume. I think some people often update their resume even without the need to apply for other jobs just because they don't really trust their memories. They might forget important details. In my case, I hardly remember the various trainings I have attended for the past two to three years.

If you are looking for a job then your resume has to be updated at in fortnight because employers will go through all best suited profiles and list the best of them for scrutiny.

Yes, I agree with you. But I also like the practice of other people who regularly/timely updates their resumes even without the need to apply for work.

Hi. I have been like you. I only update my resume in times of need. But I really had a hard time remember or the important details which have happened a few years/months back. It's still best to update our resume whenever there are significant updates in our personal and professional aspects.
