Catholic Night Mass Tradition "starts now"

Philippines

Hello Lotters, to those who are not familiar with it. it is a Filipino tradition that before the twenty fifth day of December there will be a ten day too early(3am) and evening mass (8pm) every december of the year. I don't know, i don't seem to get it to complete. and now my mom is attending one of these mass on another parish church in my bro's subdivision. as for me, i got lazy last year. I would start tonight despite the fact that i am a bit sleepy and lazy now since i got other things to do before going to the computer. it's a miracle that i still have internet, probably it won't be the same tomorrow. Has any one completed the ten night church masses? they say that once you complete it, and you make a wish, it will come true, any one can prove this belief? as for me, am just making up for the lazy times. Happy Holidays Every one

I attented the mass this early morning. There are only few people attended and its really cold. Fortunately I did not feel sleepy, I listen to the homily wholeheartedly. About the belief, there are no explanation if its true that when you complete the 9 morning mass is your wish will come true. Things happen for a reason. If you will believe on it, you will feel disappointed if your wish will not come true. The truth is if you believe in yourself you can do things, it will happen because you will do what it takes to make it happen. The mass is for Jesus and nothing else. But if you still wish to make a wish, you can do so. Everyone has a freedom of what they believe and I hope your wish come true.

hello there grecy, well, not in my place, they are more people standing in the walls or corridors in the morning, more like those who just woke up from their beds. as for me, I've been wishing to the lord ever when ever i go to church, i believe that he will give it to me in time.

Tomorrow is the beginning of our nine days novena of "simbang gabi" all of us are excited! Actually most of our neighbors are sleep early. And tomorrow we are the choir who sings at the mass. We practice a lot in preparation to this exciting event in our catholic belief. So if friends let's wake up early and attend the first simbang gabi!

We only have nine days novena and at 10th you said it on Dec.24midnight mass the "Christmas Eve" mass celebration. From Dec.16 dawn mass to Dec.24 dawn mass is our nine days novena. Others celebrated their evening mass at night before Dec.16 like what you've said Dec.15. Merry Christmas friend!

hello mods, you have got to be kidding me? wow is my parish that advance or something? must have been something wrong with the dates because it's december 15th already and i just got back from the church almost an hour ago. Nah, am not good with the morning only in the evening, i never complete the DAWN masses because i end up not taking a bath, or if i did it would be too cold.

It is already Christmas indeed. This early masses held is just a 9 day countdown before Christmas Day arrives. Although I am a Catholic I am not able to really complete the said 9 day early morning masses. Although there is an anticipated Mass at 8 in the evening I am still not able to attend since I just came from office at that time and feel quite tired already.

hello rsa, Well, that's understandable. you know, completing it is not entirely that important, as long as you pray hard and be serious and sincere in the mass so that god can be merciful and give us what we need. i would still attend since i have nothing else to do except being here online everyday

Yeah I remember when I was in College i was able to attend one or several days of attending it but I have never completed straight nine of it. Usually I attend during the 1st day and the last few days before Christmas since that is the only time I do not have classes anymore. But now that i am working already it is really hard to wake up early in the morning to attend.

oh that makes me recall those teenage days when i used to complete it together with my sister. since we are members of the choir, we need to get up earlier coz we need to vocalize since its hard to hit high notes in the morning especially when you just woke up. but the much awaited part there are the foods being sold outside! the last time i had it completed was in december 2003. i am already married and living in one of the towns here in iloilo city. unfortunately, no puto bumbong outside and bibingka is far more different than in manilaas with the wish, some came true while some did not.

hello letran! i am not a catholic but i have lots of catholic friends and so i am familiar with this simbang gabi... i remember my classmates back then, they always try to complete those days of mass...and i am happy hearing them telling stories about the homily... and i also hear from them that they like to complete the mass because they want to make a wish...hehe and according to them that the wish will be granted...i am just not sure if it is really proven... simbang gabi is really one thing i admire about some catholics specially bthe older ones...imagine waking up so early just to attend the mass for a straight 9 or 10 days? hehe that's something... good day!

Hi Ckyera, i am one of those who was able to complete the nine simbang gabi. i can't explain the feeling but it's really fulfilling that i completed it. i made a simple wish and honestly it was granted. i believe in ..god will give what is best for us in his time. i know that's one is the best for me and it's also the right time. i miss those days mards... i appreciate you for sharing your positive remarks about us catholics with regards to the simbang gabi practice.

hello msfrancisco... then i must admire you for that! actually i think God will grant whatever e wish as long as we are asking to Him and as long as it will not harm us or anyone else... our prayers are really powerful and God really listens to us... i think with being devoted on what you are doing and being sincere, that's one factor for God to grant our wishes... like on my part, i also do some devotional prayers together with my husband, but well even when i was still young and studying i always do devotional prayers and i also have proven that God do listen and grant my wishes... i am happy for you that you have a strong faith and that your wishes have been granted and of course its nice that you were able to do some sacrifices for God...

Hello ckyera, If you don’t mind if I asked what’s your religion? Well, I never passed or complete dawn masses, before it’s always in the morning, it’s either I am late or late waking up. But am glad the church gave a consideration for those who couldn’t make it in the morning. Besides, it’s dangerous because of some gang members that comes outside the church. I am glad that you like one of unique pinoy traditions. Mind you, this isn’t part of tradition in other catholic schools in other countries. Although it’s been slowly done in the US. Except in other states now because of huge snow storms. Have a great day.

Hello ms. Francisco, Really? I just went to church mass today and from what I can recall it always starts in the fifteenth of December and ends in twenty five. Some times, going to the church and pray is the best option rather than completing nine days and end up being a hypocrite only for the sake of completing it. I doubt ill be experiencing big noche buena’s. the priest told us in this first night that night mass is our gift to god, which Is true.

"Simbang gabi, simula ng pasko, sa puso ng lahing Pilipino" I feel the spirit of Christmas now, even though there are families whom i think will not celebrate their Christmas especially those people who lost their love ones of that massacre. It is really sad, anyway, all i can do now is pray for them and also celebrate Christmas the way it should be celebrated. Have a great day!

Hello Rjvb, You know, I believe Christmas should also be a time of healing for the victims and should at least not remember the bad things but the good things that they left behind. I only hope that the Government’s Christmas gift is to give justice to the families of the victims or the victims themselves so that they will rest in peace before new year.

i know that song RJ. we used to sing that song as part of our repertoire for christmas carols. oh gosh i missed those days of caroling and then wait awhile for the simbang gabi. it seems like we never get tired during those times. it was so full of fun. we can only go home after the simbang gabi and that's 5am from an overnight caroling. i am so lucky for having lots of this experience in my teen life.
