Has anyone ever gone fishing in Port Aransas?

I'm looking for a new location to go fishing. I'm from Minnesota so I'm very experienced with fishing, but in a few months I'm going to be visiting some friends in Texas and they live right by Port Aransas, which I've heard is supposed to have some really good deep sea fishing. Has anyone been there? Is the water actually clear like I read on this one fisherman's blog? I've seen some guided fishing packages ( http://www.texascharterfleet.com/ ) but I don't know. Do you think that's really necessary for someone who has been fishing for 25 years like myself? Please post your experiences. Thanks!
