Is cutting down real trees bad for the environment?

I just came across an interesting discussion: Is cutting down Christmas trees bad for the environment? I always thought nowadays the trees were specifically grown for the purpose to be cut down for Christmas - and if they wouldn't be needed, they wouldn't be grown full stop. And plastic trees can't be good for the environment. But the discussion took me a little unaware. What's your view?

i don't have much idea about christmas trees being grown just to be cut during christmas.but otherwise cutting down trees harm the environment immensely.with the drastic climatic changes happening in recent years , we should try and propagate afforestation.

Yes, if trees are cut down there needs to be a plan to restore them.

Maybe in some countries they cut down trees for the purpose of having a Christmas tree of their own but in some other countris the trees are cut due to illegal logging which causes the floods & climate change. But if people are responsible to practice reforestation maybe the world we have not is not as worst as what happened to us now.

True, it all depends on if people follow the rules.
