I don't have that problem but my husband does. I know it is good for you to drink lots of water but can you actually drink too much? He drinks close to 2 gallons a day. We can never travel very far before he is needing to make a pit stop. It is sometimes very agravating. Does anyone else out there actually drink this much?

My daughter used to.She drank way more than recommended, but I also have heard it's possible to have other side effects from drinking too much water.I can't remember what they were, but I know I've heard there's more than just having to use the restroom.

Yes one can drink too much water. If I remember correctly from my EMS training one can get over hydrated. It might affect your electrolytes. For those with heart problems it might not be a good idea, especially if they suffer from congestive heart failure. One can drown in their own body fluids. If he ever experiences difficulty in breathing or edema he should cut back for sure. I drink about just under a gallon a day.

Hi, Thanks so much for the response. He does have difficulty breathing but only when he lays down. I don;t know if that could be from drinking so much or not???? Haven't ever noticed anything else going on though. Again, Thanks

I'm no doc, but my gut feeling after have served as an Maryland EMT/CRT is him having trouble breathing while lying down is not very good. Sounds like the fluid is backing up into his lungs. If I may ask, why does he drink so much water? I wonder if it is possible to persuade him to cut back to a gallon a day.

There is such a thing as "Water Intoxication." I'm not sure of the medical details, but if you drink too much water over too short a period of time, you can die. But there's the catch, over a short period of time. Your body can deal with large amounts of water over the course of a day. Although two gallons does sound like a bit much to me. He's probably fine other than needing to go to the bathroom all the time.

There is a danger in drinking too much water at the wrong time. In instances wherein you've lost lots of fluids like when you exercise, and then you drink lots of water, you'll be in danger of having water intoxication. It's all in the balance. Water in body must be balanced with electrolytes. If there is an imbalance, then that's where the problem comes in.

I read that the kidneys can process almost 4 gallons per day so it's very unlikely that drinking too much can happen. The bigger issue is drinking a lot at one time. It'll be similar to drowning. Instead spread the water intake throughout the day.

I would be concerned that about why he feels the need to drink so much water. Is he that thirsty? Excess thirst can be a sign of many health problems. I would have him go in for a thorough check up.

Yes, you could, it's actually possible to die from drinking too much water. It's called water poisoning or h20 poisoning or something. But you have to drink rather copious amounts of water for that to happen.

oh no littlehill thats way too much.my doctor said 8 to 10 glasses a day was what almost anyone needs so he is overdoing it and there is such a thing as water poisoning from drinking a ton of water a day. we need enough to keep us hydrate but more will put a strain on the kidneys. i try to get in ten glasses a day but no more than that.

wow, i envy him a little. i used to drink a lot of water but could not get away with it as my family was 'fretful' of my health. so strange. but i too need to go to the bathroom when i drink water. i drink it at home. it is important to me because it is natural, it also is important for my health. i don't drink this much. but i do drink some.
