Think about the movies you have seen in the past ten years or so, who do you think has given the best performance as a male and a female actor? What picture or pictures made you feel that way?

It's really hard to pick just one of each, especially the males. Johnny Depp is always a stand-out. Captain Jack Sparrow was terrific and very memorable but I think his best roles in the last ten years have been John Dillinger in Public Enemies, Mort Rainey in Secret Window and James Barrie in Finding Neverland. Three very different roles in three very different movies but all were terrifically played. Kevin Spacey has long been one of my oft-forgotten favorites. Unfortunately, my favorites of his performances, John Doe in Seven and Jim Williams in Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil are both mid-90's movies, but he's still an incredible performer. Keira Knightly, especially in the Duchess. And the Jacket with Adrien Brody. She's kind of a niche actress but with two very different niches. She does a lot of the action/adventure roles like Pirates of the Caribbean and Domino but also historical "romantic" roles like the Duchess and Atonement. Those two character types have made up almost her entire career. Helena Bonham Carter and beyond Bellatrix Lestrange it's nearly impossible for me to single out a favorite of her performances. I love everything she's in (except Planet of the Apes...) Fight Club, Big Fish, Sweeney Todd: the Demon Barber of Fleet Street....just too hard! Dame Maggie Smith as Minerva McGonagall but as everything else she's ever been too. Maggie Smith is a modern icon, easily recognizable both in face and in reputation. You know if Maggie Smith is involved with a film, it is at least worth a try. Honorable mentions for some who have had two or three shots at greatness but not yet enough to get a best performance of the decade award - Jim Sturgess, Michael Cera, and Kat Dennings.

.......Hi crimsonladybug, What a pleasure to read your comments on these very talented actors and the excellent films they have been a part are. Johnny Depp is a person who was born to be an actor, you can tell how much he enjoys working his craft. He is one of the very best. Any movie that I have seen of his, I wanted to watch again. Kevin Spacey I love, if he is in a movie, I am there. He also does great imitations. Maggie Smith is a gem of an actor, she brings such class to her movies. All the others are competing as you indicate. Thanks for taking the time to give us such a very informative comment. Take care.

Well i can't really pick a female actor but as for a male for me definitely is Jason Statham, transporter movies , crank movies , the bank job and many more. He may be playing always the same character (badass dude) but he's great at it. A close second is Matt Damon with the bourne movies which are some of the best movies i've seen.

...Hi GloriouslyInsane, Welcome to the old ranch, enjoy yourself. T watched the Bank Job the other night on television and I thought it was one of the best movies I had seen in a long time. I love movies, but the movie has to have a plot or at least a good story line before I am able to concentrate on it, to watch it all the way through. Matt Damon is a very good actor, he seems to take his career very seriously. You are correct as well that the Bourne series is excellent, I have watched them multiple times, as I tend to do when I really like a movie. I can always find some part that I re-analyze and find a new take. Thank you so much for your comment. Take care

In the last ten years the best male actor would have to be Johnny Depp. He was great in "Blow" in 2001, to the Priates of the Caribbean movies all three of them. As for the Best Female Actor for the past 10 years it would have to be a toss up between Meryl Streep with "Devil Wears Prada" to "Mama Mia". As for Julia Roberts there are many before the last ten years but I would have to pick for 2001 Erin Brochovich and Duplicity this year. I love all her movies that she is in.

....Hi there lelin, I would agree with you that Johnny Depp is about the top actor in his field. His immersion into the parts he undertakes is quite amazing. He sort of becomes the character. I have enjoyed him playing in many movies. He has also grown in his skill as an actor. Meryl Streep is above and beyond as an actor, she is flexibile and brings everything to the parts she plays. She has so much depth. I enjoy Julia Roberts as well. Thanks for your response. Take care.
