Does a good writer attach themselves to their work, get heavily involved in their characters and their lives or are they capable of detaching themselves from their characters and their lives?

I feel like a good writer is very attached to his or her character. I know I'm very attached to mine, especially my superhero novel. I have written 2.75 stories with them. I have written a 3 Day Novel, a short story for contest, and 3/4 of another tale. I really like these characters. I'm planning to do a whole series featuring them.

I think that there has to be a certain attachment to the characters. If you are writing it and you don't like them enough to get involved in their lives, how do you expect your readers to do so?
