Turkey or Ham for the holidays?

Holiday turkey - Turkey
United States
December 18, 2009 8:30pm CST
I have had this discussion many times with people on whether to make a turkey or ham for the holidays. I personally like turkey, my mom likes ham, so we compromise. We make turkey on thanksgiving and ham on christmas. What does your family like to eat. Anything besides those two? Tofurkey mabye?

It has always been traditional here to have both Turkey and Ham for Christmas maybe it is is because we d not celebrate Thanksgiving here. Although I am not a big fan of Turkey.

I'm not a big fan of turkey. Everytime I've eaten turkey it's always dry and not very flavorful. I'd prefer to eat ham for the holidays and we've mostly started fixing ham during the holidays. We always have too much turkey left over when we fix it but when we fix ham it usually only lasts for a short while.

That is one of the whole reasons we love the leftover turkey.. there is so much and you can make all kinds of things with it, we make turkey sandwiches the next day because all of us are still coming down from christmas..

Well, it depends on the Holiday for me. Christmas, I always want ham. It fits. Thanksgiving is all about the turkey. Always has been for my family, and probably always will stay that way.

Since we had turkey for Christmas, we are going to have a stuffed pork loin roast this year for Christmas, with all the traditional trimmings. At the major extended family celebration, there are usually several meats, both ham and turkey. We number nearly 100 now when all together, and we each bring several dishes to pass to go with the main foods. Karen

I like turkey all the time. I would have it for all holidays if I could. Ham is a lot easier though and since my mother does the cooking I tell her ham is okay for Christmas. For Thanksgiving I still want turkey, it just seems like that's what you should have, kind of like pumpkin pie.

In my country, there is an age-long tradition to slaughter pigs the day before Christmas. So, as my parents live in the country side and can either breed pigs either buy a pig for a good price, we always have pork-based food on Christmas.

We will likely be having turkey. We are going to my father-in-law's house for Christmas Day, and he is supposed to be cooking turkey and dressing, although I am hoping that someone who shows up over there will cook a ham to bring. I am not a big fan of turkey. I will eat it, but I would much rather have ham, especially if it is a good smoked-cured ham, but fresh ham is good as well...

chelsgrrl69 we had our christmas party today here at Gold Crest and had ham and noodles with shrimp, salads, sweet potatoes, and aspargarus and carrots. a lovely spread and every one was really in the Christmas spirit too. they played Carols all the time we were eating. Christmas day here will be more quiet as a lot of the employees get the day off to be with their families. those of us who have no home to go to are stuck here. my son I am sure will come to see me Christmas day so that will be really lovely as we c an visit and exchange gifts and just share our love.

We usually do turkey, but some of the other family member do ham. On my husband's side there's usually some German thing such as rouladen (yum)...

Well, I'm not nor have I ever been a fan of turkey, so if I was to have my choice between the two it would always be ham. However, we have always had the traditional turkey for Thanksgiving. Our family has never done a big meal for Christmas because we've always traveled for Christmas, but we do have a large family feast for New Year's Day and for that feast we typically have ham with a lot of the traditional sides that you associate with a feast day.

I go to my brother's house for the holidays, and for both Thanksgiving and Christmas my sister in law makes both turkey and ham, because everyone has their own tastes and she wants all of us to enjoy the meals. Occasionally she'll even make chicken when she's having a guest over who doesn't like turkey OR ham. I used to know a girl who wouldn't eat anything that was from an animal, or so she said, yet she would drink milk and eat a hot dog occasionally. But for the holidays she would only eat the non-meat things, and drink only water. I never did figure her out...

Because we have such a large household, we have both ham and turkey on Christmas and Thanksgiving. We also have ham for Easter. Sometimes we also have duck or goose for the holidays, depending on if it is available. This may seem really odd, but last Easter we had roasted rabbit for dinner. We were raising rabbits at the time and it seemed like a good idea at the time.

I prefer turkey as that is what my family has always had. My boyfriend's family does a country ham. I hate country ham. If we ever host the family dinner, I'm making a turkey!

We had Ham for Thanksgiving, so I am saying Turkey too for Christmas, but if it is left up to me I would have both, I prefer ham for myself, but need turkey because it is more healthier for my health conditions. I went out shopping today for a ham just for me.

Hi, We always have Turkey on Thanksgiving and either Ham or Chicken on Christmas, this year I'm living on my own so we'll have Ham but I don't mind either of the three. We use to have Chicken on Christmas a lot because my brother isn't a huge Ham lover but I always prefer Turkey on Thanksgiving, it's a tradition to have Turkey in my family, we've never had anything else on that holiday. I'm looking forward to having a delicious Ham in just under a week : ) yummy!!
