How do you help the enviroment and Earth?

While we are all on this Earth I feel it's necessary that we all try to help out the environment and make a difference, if not everyday than a lot of the time. My question to all of you is how do you help the environment? Do you recycle, reuse things that you can? I am big into recycling, I recycle anything I can and it drives my room mate crazy from time to time although I've gotten her into recycle quite a bit but not as bad as me. I will recycle Tylenol bottles, shampoo bottles, even the cardboard the toilet paper comes on, among other things. I always grew up learning to recycle whatever can be recycled. I partly get this habit from my mom and other family members because their big into it as well. I'm also in the habit of using the reusable bags they sell in the grocery stores, and many retail stores now. It saves on a ton of plastic bags, but if I ever get any I try and bring them to the market because they have the bins you can put them in to be recycled. Whenever I see trash on the ground as long as it's not a used tissue or something I'll pick it up and throw it away, I'm also careful with items I throw away, I see if they'll harm an animal. For example if you buy a six pack of soda that has that plastic around the cans to hold them together on the shelf, I'll cut it up so an animal couldn't get caught in it. I can thank my mom for telling me and teaching me about that one, great tip that many people might not know or think about. What do you all do to help this Earth? I look forward to hearing your responses.

Hi. First of all, I admire you for being a responsible citizen of our Mother Earth. I'm not really into recycling but I normally re-use plastic or paper bags and glass or plastic bottles. When I'm doing the groceries, I always decline any unnecessary plastics as I know that it would only be thrown away after use.

I do reuse some plastic bags for my trash basket in my bathroom and I use regular trash bags for the kitchen garbage but besides that I don't really need them for anything so I bring them back to the grocery store to the bin they provide so they can be recycled.

Oh, that's a great idea. I'm not aware of any malls here in our country that accept used plastic bags for recycling. I hope they also consider promoting that practice here. But I know of a mall chain here that promotes a program called "green bag day" every Wednesday. On Wednesdays, the mall does not issue new plastic bags. The shoppers will have to bring their own bags or else they will have to pay for every new plastic they will ask from the stores.

I recycle but the problem is they don't give me a big enough bucket to do it with. Every week I can fill up 7 grocery bags with material to recycle but the problem is I don't have a big enough bucket for recycling for the recycle guys. So, I'm forced to put it in the regular garbage can to avoid it being all over the place.

I'm not sure where you live but when I lived in Rhode Island before I moved to California this past September they'd like us use paper bags for extra recycling. As long as we set the bag or bags near the recycling bin they'd take it. At my apartment complex here they have trash bins for recycling and I'm always filling it up, but not many people here recycling which is a huge pet peeve of mine or they'll put trash in the recycling bin.

when I lived in MN, I had a large recylce trash can. Now here in NC, I get a small bucket that fits three paper bags of stuff. I can fill this thing five time over in a week. So, it doesn't work for me and if I put paper bags next to it on trash day - yes they will take it but the trash guy doesn't come until the afternoon, by the time he gets here there is trash through all over the street by the wind and we seem to get a lot of rain which makes it extremely messy. So, I need a larger bin to recycle properly as to not cause more mess by trying to create less waste.

recycling, reuseable grocery bags, not having the AC lower than 75 in summer, not having the heat higher than 69 in winter, insulation, double pane windows...

I love the reusable bags, I actually bought five more tonight, you can use them for so many things as far as shopping, it's great and it beats all the plastic bags

I agree with the idea of recycling although where I live there are no recycling bins and in some areas they leave these empty crates for you to fill, we don't receive those either! They want us to recycle and yet they don't provide us with the means to do it. On my part I do try to play my part! I'm a regular cyclist and I know this is the cleanest form of transport available. I've got into the habit of turning electrical equipment off and not leaving them on standby. All the big guys are having a meeting in Copenhagen right now and still they are having problems there. There are some countries that are still not willing to pull their weight as it were! Anyway, hopefully it's not too late for our lovely planet Earth! Andrew

Great response Andrew, they want everyone to recycle but they don't provide people with the tools to do so and that makes things worse. Cycling is a great way to get around, it helps health wise and the Earth. I hope it's not too late for the Earth either, because so many people are careless and trash it as if there's no tomorrow.

hey there! The major problem right now is that consumption rates are increasing along with waste. It is important to recycle and reuse products though i believe that it is extremely critical to reduce our consumption to start off with... it'll help to reduce our footprint on the planet =)

I agree, everyone around the world needs to take care of the Earth because it effects us all, we're all living on the same planet. It shouldn't matter if we're in different countries, towns, cities or states, we all need to do things to help out, even if it's little things, it all helps in the long run.

There are many ways to help save our environment. Personally, I always throw the garbages in a proper way. I don't want to throw it anywhere because it can cause some environmental problems such as clogging the canals and therefore causing flood during heavy rain. Even if it is just a simple practice but I believe that it can be of great help in order to protect our environment and to protect the lives of the people as well. Another way is to sell some used things that can still be recycled. Aside from helping the nature, i can also get small amount of money from it.

Everyone will make a difference if he can make an effort. As far as I am concerned, one is to use plastic as less as possible,I had better use environment-protect product, another is to by bus not by car.Besides I often tell little boys never throw away garbage here and there,we all have duty to protect environment and earth -- the only home for human bing. May our home be more beautiful and healthy!
