Ow! Ow! Ow! Owie!!! Has anyone else shoveled snow recently?

I'm walking like I'm 200 years old today. My HAIR hurts! My fingernails hurt!!! Shoveling snow, isn't it fun? We have what seems NOW to be 1,000 feet of driveway but in actuality is about 50 feet of driveway. It was covered with 33 inches of snow that fell on Friday and Saturday. We were snowbound yesterday. More precisely, I was snowbound with my husband yesterday. So, guess what I did to ensure that he made it to work today? Yep, I grabbed a shovel and started digging. Oh, sure, he was shoveling, too, but whining like a little baby with every shovelful. I knew he would not get it finished by himself so I helped. Guess what I ordered yesterday? Yep, a snowblower. LOL Unfortunately, it won't get here for at least 10 days. Kind of like closing the barn door after the horse got out, huh? Well, I'm going to be prepared next time! Anyway, we've had a LOT of snow in the U.S. so far this season. The east coast got plummetted this past weekend. (Yep, I'm in the Mid-Atlantic... we got the worst of it.) Have you been shoveling any snow recently? How did/do you feel the day after? Were you smart enough to hire someone else to do it? I mean, someone YOUNG and STRONG to do it? Just wondering if I'm the only stupid one or there are more like me determined to do it yourselves.

I would have had hubby do his own shoveling if he wanted to get to work. Still, there are those who do it for hire----------- You are going to be sore for a while, but it will give you some food for thought till the next big snow. Find a kid who will do it for you.

You people are really lucky! I am jealous! You get snow each year and have a lot of fun! Here in Southern India, all that you get is scorching sun for half year and the other half is rain and floods with very cold nights. I fear climate change!

You know, I thought we were starting to experience global warming here because the last two winters were very mild, not at all what I got used to growing up. But, this year has changed my mind. It has been much colder than what we've had recently. We have had snow five times so far this month when it is rare to get snow just once in December. I'd LOVE to send you some of this, some snow along with the cold temperature! I'm already tired of it. I want Springtime! But, even that was odd this past year. It was colder than normal and extremely rainy. And, please believe me, snow is not all that much fun! It can be if you're young and have endless energy but, once you start putting on the years like I have, it's just a big inconvenience. I love looking at it because it's so beautiful and peaceful but we also have to clean it off our cars, off the sidewalks, driveways, roads, etc. I'm very thankful that someone invented the snowblower! LOL

That is just so cool; you get to experience snow. Here in Sg, no snow... But I'm grateful all the same, no matter what. If I have the opportunity to shovel, I'd probably do that definitely. Shoveling can be fun, if having the right kind of crowd and good people around. I'm strong and young to do it definitely. But I think it might be sore if someone isn't used to it.

If like that, and if ever I'm in that kind of position, I think sitting down and drinking hot cocoa and watching others doing the fun action would also be half the fun. We'll make do without the strenuous physical demands...hmmmmmp... I miss fun days too..

That is exactly why so many people end up with sprains and sore backs, they try to do too much when they're not used to it. I sure could have used you around here on Sunday or Monday! Even with my health problems, I'm a pretty active person so I didn't give it much thought, until... AAARGH! I used to love shoveling snow when I was younger. It was the same reason you gave, all the people who were also out shoveling. It always seemed like a party. We'd be laughing and joking, helping each other, someone would inevitably bring out hot cocoa or coffee, it was great fun with awesome camaraderie. I miss those days.

Haha, been there done that, as the saying goes. I'm only 18 so I suppose it doesn't take such a toll on my body as it would if I were older, but I feel your pain. My grandma lives in the country and had to get to church on a Sunday morning, and it had snowed 5 feet the day before. So it was my cousins and I [the four of us, none of our other cousins felt like helping] to the rescue. We got there at 5 am, and finished at 9 am. We had to shovel our way from the end of the driveway up to her house. It's a 300 foot driveway, so it sucked! She had a warm breakfast waiting for us inside, but still. I hate snow!! I'm usually the one to volunteer to help shovel snow for her, since my other cousins are all 'busy', in other words, lazy. And I live 20 miles from her, too! Oh well, she is my grandma! Haha, and normally she'll let me stay for breakfast and lunch, and sometimes she'll make me her famous hot cocoa and warm apple pie. =] Ah, what I do for her cooking...

We've had a total of 3 inches (a lot for this area) so no shoveling needed. Last time I shoveled I felt like I had been run over by a big truck...twice. The family in VA had a friend come plow them out with his big tractor. (the glory of living in the country) I have heard that this is supposed to be a bad winter so I am sure that you will make good use of your snowblower.

I'm afraid you're right about this winter. We've had snow five times already, even before winter officially began! We usually don't get a lot of snow until February. It makes me worry about what's ahead this year. We're in the country in a small, private community, although we can't see our neighbor's houses, the trees block them. But, we share a private, communal road and we have that plowed. I was hoping to catch the guy doing the plowing after this snow but I missed him. Drats! Oh, well. My husband can have fun with the new snowblower. I'm sure he'll get the opportunity sooner than we hope.

I'm not making fun of you or anything, but I really wish I could have winter in my country. Living in south-east asia, the weather in my country is basically hot and humid the whole year round. Occasionally it rains, but other than that it's just hot. It gets uncomfortable to go out or even stay home without the air-conditioning. I'd like to go somewhere cold for a while just to see what it feels like! Or would I just regret it?

Well, seeing as how you wouldn't be used to the freezing cold temperatures we get, you'd probably be miserable after a few minutes in it. But, you can always come inside to warm up! I doubt I could tolerate some of the colder temperatures we get north of where I live. They get way down, well below 0 degrees and my body starts protesting when it goes into the 20's! LOL Snow is something I think everyone should experience, if only once in their lives. NOT shoveling it, though. That's no fun! Well, it can be if you're with the right people and make a party out of it. I have a firepit and would have loved making a fire in it when I was outside shoveling but I can't find it right now. It's somewhere under that mound of snow! Even us, who have lived with these extreme differences in the weather all our lives, start complaining that we want summer to come when it's freezing outside or we want winter to come when it's so hot we can't breathe. I doubt you would like cold but I think you'd enjoy playing in the snow. Most people do.

We've only had a couple of inches of snow altogether so far,(Ireland) and it half melts before the next shower,so You can still see the grass outside poking through! Our recycle wheely bins were emptied yesterday,so bringing it back in,I used the bin as a snowplough to clear the path of what little was on it..snowfall here is so rare,it's not worth having dedicated equipment for the Job..I saw a Gadget a while back,it looked as though someone had combined a snow shovel with a cartwheel on the shaft..the demo video (Youtube?) looked impressive, people pushing the thing seemed to be getting the results of a snowblower with about the same effort!

That gadget sounds very interesting! I'd much rather use something that is people-powered than something gas or electric powered. But, it was my husband's idea to get a snowblower. He's one of those men who sees something with POWER and has to have it. It's a guy thing, I guess. We really haven't had that much snow for a long time here. In 2006, we got 18 inches of snow. Before that, 31 inches is the most I can remember. This storm beat that one by 2 inches. The last two winters were particularly mild and I would have said it was global warming but, so far, this season has thrown that theory out the window! We've had much colder than normal temperatures, plus it has snowed five times already this month, which is also extremely rare. I'm just glad we're getting something so we won't have to shovel anymore. LOL

yup.yesterday. damn snowblower broke down.. of course it picks a blizzard to do so.. i'm not hurting much today, but i took a major power nap after doing all that. woke up like 4 hours later. some kid showed up before it stopped and asked for 80 bucks to do my walk. yea,right..cop a walk, kid.

Someone should tell that kid that times are hard! Good grief! I can't believe he wanted $80.00! I could see it if you had a LOOOONG driveway or something but just a sidewalk? No way, Jose! My son said he was going to shovel walks but would only ask for $10.00 at the most. (Most around his house are not big at all, 15 or 20 feet.) I'm so sorry for you! It's always the worst possible time when things like that break down. Of course, we don't usually test these things until we have to use them, like windshield wipers. My tiller brown down as I was trying to till my garden this past Spring. I got MAYBE five feet tilled before the tiller went belly up. I took a nap, too, once I knew my husband could get out. I slept maybe three hours. Actually, I didn't feel too bad when I woke up from the nap but, when I woke up this morning, hoo boy! I'll be soaking in a hot bath in a little while. I hope that helps! I was worried because I still have so much to do before Christmas (everyone gathers at our house) but it looks like we're going to have to postpone Christmas this year, at least until the following weekend. We're supposed to get freezing rain Thursday night into Friday. I won't want anyone to attempt driving here in that. Some people are coming from about 120 miles away and there's no way I'd want it on my conscience if they were to have an accident! You just can't drive on ice. So, that'll at least give me time for my aching muscles to heal and have everything ready for everyone.

I was trying to figure out where you were with 33" of snow when we got 24 here in South Jersey. So, I took a quick peak at your profile and saw Winchester, VA, and realized why you had more. Winchester's a great little town and a few years back it had a wonderful little Mexican restaurant in it - authentic stuff. My guy friend and I used to take road trips and on one of them ended up in Martinsburg and traveled to Winchester to see a place we'd never seen before. That's how we found the restaurant. Other side of the Blue Ridge, I think you are. My cousin, rat that he is, lives 15 miles from Lexington. If I'm lucky, he's snowed in, too, on his 14 acres of forest land with no city services to speak of. (Yeah - I'm just a tiny wee bit unhappy with him.) As for shoveling, fortunately, my landlords took care of that. They usually have one of the nephews run his plow through several times during a storm to keep up with it, but he came only once and then we were snowed in, so reinforcements were called in (it's a large Irish Catholic family) and between two snow blowers and several shovels, our conjoined driveways for four houses were cleared out for us. My car was still covered with snow, thanks to the antics of my downstairs neighbor who shoveled all her snow onto my car, so I did a bit of shoveling myself yesterday to get out. Even after two days of sunshine, there was still nearly two feet on the roof and hood! But, I wouldn't be able to do too much shoveling at one time. I could do it in dribs and drabs, but not from start to finish.

Living in the mountains is certainly beautiful but it definitely has it's drawbacks! We lucked out the first two winters we've lived here because they were very mild with very little snow. This year is more than making up for those two years, though! I wonder if that Mexican restaurant you're talking about is the same one my son has been raving about. He's told me a few times that I have to try it but I can't remember the name of it now. I'll ask him when I see him. I shoveled a bit on Sunday. My dogs wanted to go out on the deck so badly because they love snow but this was too much for them. So, I shoveled from the door to the railing so they could at least peek at the yard. They were very happy. LOL My husband shoveled a bit of the driveway on Sunday but gave up when his truck slid sideways halfway down the drive (it has a sharp slope). He went out again Monday morning but came in complaining. So, after he rested a bit, I grabbed my coat, gloves and boots and went outside. I think that made him feel like the big weenie he really is, so he followed me and started shoveling again. I was so sick of hearing him complaining by that time that I was bound and determined to get the driveway passable. LOL Oh, I paid for it yesterday but, having him at work, I was able to relax and pamper myself all day. Yeah, it was worth it.

Hi CD. I'm feeling quite a bit better today. My lower back and hips are talking to me but that's a lot better than when they were screaming at me! The snow is still here. It's quite a bit lower than it was, about 18 or 20 inches now but still quite pretty. We're supposed to get freezing rain tomorrow! I tried to postpone our celebration for next weekend but my friend from Maryland said she wants to try it. I did all I could to talk her out of it because you simply cannot drive on ice but she's even more stubborn than I am. LOL If they do manage to get here without having an accident, they may be spending the weekend. That should actually be quite nice! Anyway, my sons are coming today because of the weather tomorrow. I've been busy getting the dinner cooked all morning and it's smelling very good in here right now. Mmmmmmmmmmmm! I'm taking a break because I just can't stand for too long anymore. Oh! I did make a snow angel when we were outside shoveling the driveway but HE threw snow on top of it. I'll try to get back out there and make another one. Maybe I can do that today while my sons are here. I'll get a photo before anyone else throws snow on it or before the freezing rain gets here. (It's supposed to start tonight and end tomorrow afternoon or evening.)

Nope, haven't had to shovel snow this winter yet, but I know it will be here sooner or later. When we get a large amount of snow, it is good to send kids, grandkids, whomever, out to make snowmen. Have them start in the driveway first, and then by the time they are done, half or more of the snow is already cleared away! Also, those ergonomic shovels may be weird looking, but they do make the job a lot easier - more pushing and less lifting. Nothing compares to the good old snowblower though!

My son bought one of those shovels. Funny how I haven't heard from him since this snow! Well, I did speak to him on Saturday, when it was snowing. He had to work that night and every night since so I'm sure he's staying inside as much as he can. But, 50 feet of driveway is a lot of shoveling when you have physical problems. I have fibromyalgia and arthritis. My husband has 2 bulging disks in his lower back and probably has arthritis in his hips. He complains enough about them but won't see a doctor to get help with them. He did have his back X-rayed which is when we found out about the disks but refused to go for therapy. I'll be so very happy once that snowblower gets here! We don't have young kids or grandkids... yet. There are no youngsters around here, either. I'd put the word out that they could play here if there were some nearby because we have the most open property around. (We're in the mountains; lots of trees.) It's PERFECT for building snowmen, snow forts, igloos, you name it. Just no kids!

Thank you, malamar. I'll be careful, promise! My shoveling days are over now. The snowblower is on it's way and should be here by early next week at the latest. I agree that the best buildings ever were what we built ourselves out of snow. They were so COOL! Oh, the fun we had as kids! I'd be turning blue from the cold before my mother grabbed me and yanked me into the house. Who cares how cold it is when you're having so much fun?!?

What! Snow forts and igloos? Did you have those too? I remember some of the greatest "buildings" I have ever seen were the ones we kids made out of snow and ice! Not the ones on video games, but the ones out in our own back yard. With health problems, take care with the snow shoveling and such. It can be draining and debilitating. Much better to be "snowbound" than to hurt yourself too much, ya know what I mean? Have a safe, and happy holiday, Malamar

I feel your pain honey! I live in Plymouth MA and we never get much snow but this year i swear we must have got a foot and a half(atleast!) thaknk god my husband and mother were home and we have 3 shovels so we all helped out. We dont have a super long drive way.... it can fit about 4 cars... but we do have a big back yard and a porch off out house leading to the big yard. Our dog refused to gone out in the snow to go to the bathroom so we had to shovel the whole porch and a big part of the yard so she'd pee!

Hahaha! I was just talking about one snow we had and what my dog did. She was like yours so I shoveled about 10 feet out in the yard so she'd have a place to go. When she got to the end of the shoveled path, she must have thought the rest of the yard was over that big, white barricade and jumped right into the snow. It must have been at least three feet high. About a second later, she came bursting out the side of the snow, totally covered in it with a VERY confused look on her face. I laughed so hard I almost had to go potty myself! LOL We moved here 2 1/2 years ago, so this is our third winter here. The first two were so mild I never thought we'd get more than a few inches at a time. This year seems to be making up for the other two, though. It has snowed five times so far this month! If I added it all up, it would be about four feet of snow in total. It's scaring me because I'm wondering if this is just a preview of the weather we'll be getting this season. I certainly hope not!

Mine, too! I have a cat who came to us as a stray when we first moved here. He's always gone outside to do his business. He's been crying at the door, just like your cats. When I open it, he just looks outside, then back at me and cries again. I think he wants me to get rid of all that white stuff so he can do what he has to do. Just think of all those muscles you worked out today! You'll have the body of a svelte athlete! If only shoveling snow gave a good reward. I have to say I have never shoveled snow. We don't get a lot of it in Oklahoma. I remember when I was thirteen we had a heck of a lot of snow. It was March 1st, my birthday, and we had gotten at least six inches. It wasn't the first snowfall of course, so it was safe for my dad to make us snow ice cream. Do you think that is all snow is good for? 1. Get some pollution out of the air, 2. Cancel school (only desirable for children, not adults), and 3. Snow ice cream. That year my dad did some shoveling. But in general we don't have enough to shovel. Well, our maintenance man goes around and clears steps around out complex when it snows. To keep it from building up and icing over. We're supposed to get snow tomorrow night, but it won't be the kind of undertaking you guys have right now.

You know, my husband came in here, put his arms up (body builder style) and said "I'm getting buff" but winced as he put his arms back down. LOL He's in as much pain as I am. My mother told me about the year my sister was born. She said there was a snowstorm the day before, which was March 1st! (My sister was born on March 2nd.) She said there was a foot of snow on the ground when she went into labor. This was in Maryland, though, not Oklahoma. I love it when it snows. The air smells so fresh and clean, because it is! Yep, you don't want to eat the first snow that falls. That's filled with all the crud in the air. My sister used to eat snow... she ate a lot of snow. I told her it would make her grow hair all over her body and she got scared, then angry at me when she learned the truth. (She was my sister, it's allowed to tease your sister. She used to shoot paperclips at me so I had every right to tease her. LOL) I just keep looking outside and marveling at how beautiful it is. That helps keep my mind off all the pain I'm in right now.

Believe me, blackbriar, if there was a way I could get ALL of this to you, I would, in a heartbeat! I love watching the snow falling and turning everything white but I kind of like to still be able to tell what something is under that snow by it's shape. This snow engulfed everything! LOL Even my car was nothing more than a white hump under it. My dogs, who love to play in the snow, refused to go play in this; it was just too deep. (They're Maltese, tiny dogs.) I like maybe 6 inches of the stuff, nothing more than that. That's easy to drive in so we wouldn't have to shovel our driveway. Our walkway in front of our house is not that long so that wouldn't be a problem, either. The next time it's predicted for us to get anywhere near this much, I'll make sure to tell it to make a U-turn and head your way. Sound good?

That's hard to walk in even without kids! Harder with them. I hate having to walk in snow more than 6 inches deep. I'd prefer to not have to walk in snow, period. We had three snowstorms in two weeks in 1979, which dumped a total of five feet of snow on us. Luckily, it was 24 inches with one storm, a week later it was 16 inches, then 20 inches. Each one was bad but not nearly as bad as if all this snow had fallen in one storm. I was very quick with the snow shovel back then. LOL

wow now that is a lot of snow to have. You couldn't walk in that in 1979 or you could but it would be pretty hard to. Yeah it does get hard to walk by yourself let alone with kids in that kind of snow. we have snow but it is melting away slowly. The street seem pretty clear but the back roads are not.

Yikes, I haven't shoveled snow like that in about 3 years now. We moved to Southern Texas where snow like that is few and far between. I think the last major storm I heard about down here happened like 6 years ago and it was an ice storm. No need for shoveling the ice. Time to find some kids to hire cheap to do the work. Oh wait, good luck with that. They will start to complain that it is too cold to be outside.

My youngest son made some money by shoveling snow for people around where he lives. He only charged $10.00, too, unless it was an especially short walk, then he asked for only $5.00. He knows times are hard all over and didn't want to press his luck. LOL The last snow we had anywhere near this was back in 1983. We got 31 inches. Before that, it was 1979 where we got five feet of snow in three snowstorms in a two-week time period. Before THAT, I can only remember one massive snowstorm when I was about seven years old. But, back then, it didn't matter if it was a few inches or a few feet. Snow was meant to be played in! LOL Oh, how I'd love to have kids around now. Watching them have fun in the snow would make it all worth the trouble. Well, almost. We don't have any young ones around here, not even teenagers. My boys live 12 miles away and, since we couldn't get out, they couldn't have gotten in. But, that's all behind us now. We can get out now so it was worth the effort. Now, if I can only stop hurting enough to WANT to get out!

Hey chulce! Hahahaha, I remember one day when it was snowing like crazy, and I asked some kids to shovel my driveway for 10$. They agreed and happily shoveled my driveway for 10$. Maybe they really needed the money, I don't know, but it sure;y helped me out! Have a great day and have loads of fun mylotting! Punjab911

You must have really wanted him to go to work! I live outside of Pgh. and we didn't get it as bad as you. We got around 6 inches I guess. My driveway is 175 feet long. I tried to shovel it once and it took me 3 days doing sections at a time. I have someone come plow it now. An ex left a snowblower here, but I am not sure if it works. I am disabled and couldn't use it if it did. I don't have to worry about going to work anymore, so I told the guy that plows it, I will need it if we get more than 4 inches.

LOL Yep, I wanted him to go to work. I had too much to do in order to get ready for Christmas and he was just in my way. I'm glad to hear you didn't get much snow. I can handle 6 inches. Well, if I'm careful. I'm disabled, too, and what shoveling I did REALLY HURT! But, I'm much better now. I won't be using the snowblower. That will be his job. It's electric so it should be lighter and easier to use than a gas-powered one but, still, I know I couldn't handle it. I had thought of trying to grab the guy who plows our private, communal road but he whizzed by here so fast I couldn't reach him in time. I'm not sure who does it, someone in our little community. But, I think my husband will have fun with his new "toy". You know how men and power are, like peas and carrots!

At least it sounds like you had some fun while you were out in the snow. If you enjoy yourself it sometimes doesn't seem so much like work. To bad you didn't have a snow blower a long time ago. If it were me, with my luck once I got a snow blower it wouldn't snow again! fMaybe that's not a bad idea!
