How do you recognize scams?

If it sounds to good to be true than it probably is. This has been a good idea to go by but how good is what needs to be determined good is a different level to almost anyone. Wanting to much personal information especially credit cards bank accounts, ss#,etc are definate red flags and for me an immediate end of discussion.
