Why is it that many people ask...

what do you want to receive this Christmas? A question I have seen repeated for the last few days. Is this the only question to ask on that day? And I see none or maybe only one who asked "what do you want to give this Christmas?" So, people really want to receive and receive rather than give and share. It is okay if this question is coming from "nonbelievers" but if these questions are always coming from "Christians" then, there is a big problem. Christians do we really understand the meaning of this Day? Or we just flow into movement of the current. Is the spirit of this day really lost? I need answers from all Christians, I'm just sad of the current trend and we Christians sometimes are lost in the crowd. Are we going to stand up to restore the "lost spirit" of this Day called Christmas? Let's forget about "Jesus" not born on Dec. 25, I just want to know if there are "few" Christians who are willing to bring back the "early days where Christ was born in "utter" simplicity and humility and the joy that's present among those simple people with Mary and Joseph. A revival of what Christianity is all about, is it possible to happen in this world of paganism, corruption of Christmas, commercialism, etc. I need answers from all Christians. It's hard to start this discussion but I can't restrain what's in my heart. Christians' answers are welcome, non-Christians can also state their view and I will respect all answers. Thank you.

hi levite! you have started a nice discussion. 1) why do people keep asking what do you want to receive? 2) why do people want to receive rather than give? think this way. they are asking what do you want to receive because they wanted to give you of what you want. so if you came accross such a discussion again, just respond that you want this or that & ask them to give you. they will stop asking this type of questions again.

I think it is because we really do not know what others want for Christmas so we cannot ask "what do I want to give for Christmas, because if I say I want ti give away lots of money, there will be someone who thinks "I do not want money I would rather work for it." If I want to give dvds to my sons, they might already have it and might prefer books instead. The same with presents to anyone. This is talking about material things. I can say I want to give so much for the Mission Fields and so much for the Church and increase my offerings so much. But that is all year round and not just at Christmas. Also that is also, "let your right hand not know what your left hand does," so I sort of do not tell everyone that I am giving ===every week at the collection plate and as for helping a specific Mission, I cannot say "I plan to give so much a month if I have the money," until I have the money and that is something that my right hand should not know what the left hand does. The point is that I do want to get things for Christmas, and I do want a piano, and would not mind getting one, but I am not going to say so. Because when you are an adult, you realize that getting you something, whether a piano, computer, a box of chocolates, costs the other person and that other person may have gone without, so it is better to try to get the stuff yourself. Now for the spiritual things. I cannot give someone the Holy Spirit as it is not mine but God's to give. However aside from saying that one will give so much a year to help the Mission fields, the best thing is that to give more of my heart to the Lord and let HIM guide me and also to pray for the salvation of my loved ones.

though that's the question repeated again and again these days but that's the most thing everyone can concern on this period. that's not bad to talk hot and popular topics here and a lot member can get involved easily and respond to it.

I think most christians have lost their christmas essence in their mindset. They only thinking about the party, or another celebration but they don't really know about what is the actual meaning on christmas celebration. I don't think if take and give is really a main part in this celebration. Well, i don't celebrating christmas so i can't commenting much more about the take and give culture. But i think take and give should be done anytime you have chance for do it, so it's not a once time a year culture which only must do when christmas come. Have a nice day and happy mylotting.

Hi dianmelydia. Yes secularism and commercialism have been overwhelming the minds and hearts of many Christians today that they have lost the true meaning and essence as you have said of what Christmas is all about. Sharing and giving must be done continuously and not just a one-time event. Have a nice day too.

I guess the possible main reasons why many people ask what they want receive this chirstmas are: maybe they are in question of material things you want maybe they are in question of the being of a person, this happen usually in religious gatherings maybe they are curious about your likes maybe they are eager to know about you maybe they have no other topics to open about and since it is Christmas then that question can be valid in asking.. We cannot predict what is on the mind of a person, unless actions are seen. Sad to say, but at present time, the real joy of christmas for others come in expensive gives and the spirit is more of getting than giving.. It is true nowadays, that some people do celebrate christmas for their own splendid celebration but nor for sharing to other less fortunate people. It is in how every person see Christmas for him.. Christianity is being a good christian who never think bad for someone nor intend to deceive someone. He should follow the doings of christ as responsible he can. Because, life is easy if only some people would put in their hearts and mind the GOOD COMMANDMENT because it will never lead you to nowhere. Instead, this will direct you to a Good and peaceful life.

And maybe they want to generate more responses since there was double pay yesterday Dec 22, here on mylot . And also crime rate goes high during these holiday seasons since some might use the opportunity to steal and even kill somebody to give to their loved ones -- Commercialism. And some become sad if they don't receive gifts on this day even if it is not their birthday, ha, ha. Why don't Christians give gift to the One whom this occasion is attributed to. Anyway he is not asking too much from us but only our heart to be open for Him. May the grace of Christ Jesus be with you always.

i think if they ask if what do you want to receive what do you want for Christmas doesnt mean that they've forgotten what it really means. If you noticed, during this time the people going to churches grew. But I do agree at some point there are people who've forgotten what Christmas really is. and that saddens me.

You say during this moment of time people going to churches grew. They are called "seasonal Christians." Have you heard of that?

Christmas has been commercialized for some time. Many people donot remember the religious part of the holiday. They seem to identify more with the aspect of Santa Claus and buying gifts. I don't think this is a trend that will stop anytime soon. People are just so focused on money and getting money that they just relate everything to this one pursuit. They can't remember that Xmas is Christ and what he did for this world in being born. I think one day people will return to a simpler style of living and we will remember again the things in life that are really important. As far as people asking "What do you want to receive this Christmas?" it is not an entirely bad thing. It does mean they're thinking of other people and not saying "What are you going to give me?"

Well i think as many users are new to mylot and hundreds of users sign up daily here so when they examine the site they found the topic and think they they will also make a similar topic like this and users will again comment upon the discussion and when they found that it was not worthy then they understand that yeah started a existing discussion is a no wise decision and repeated topics are annoying for old users as they are sick of seeing the same topic the very next day which they answered the previous day . So my advise to all never start a existing topic as it is very annoying. Come up with new ideas or share your happiness or sadness.
